@@victoria763 nah there’s no unique way when you absolutely butcher the dance 😂, their kabuti is way off, head movements are so messy, their hand movements and positions are too high at times, timing is super off. Could go on but 💅🏽 Still, good effort 😌

Must be the wine before the show lol! Alcohol makes you overcome your shyness but it ruins your performance! I remember being in Boarding School and having Cultural Dances during Cultural Day, the ones who drank before the dance were the ones who messed up the synching of the dance.

They are literally on the other side of the world. They must have been unable to hire a real “tia katei”. Those in NZ are closer to Kiribati so they were able to hire and sponsor the stay of well known “tia katei” all the way from Tarawa. Talking of butchering the Kiribati dance, you should know that many of our tia katei started butchering our local dance in the 70’s after independence in their bid to win the selection to represent Kiribati at the South Pacific Festival of Arts. Judging by the audience happy response to these dancers move, I would say that it is not bad at all. Personally I would say well done ladies. Kam niko, kam tonu, ao ami bwai te mauri te raoi ao te tabomoa.

@@minnieee123 Traditional then. Like Hawaii & Tahiti;( Where I lived many years.) Cultural changes bring changes to Traditional dancing. They are all semi-professionals, Their costumes are of modern materials. In 1997, I spent about a year in three month stays, I was there for two Christmases. The dancing would go on for ten hours! Girls & boys would faint even. Even I found a sort of trance feel. But, the dancing was quite different from this. The skirts of the girls were dyed in octopus ink & mixed with the sweat & ran down their legs! Before each dance, we, the spectators, the village & one or two yachties, like me, would sprinkle talc on their shoulders...... I never found the reason. But, when one realises that talc didn't exist there, it must be a fairly new addition! The only music was a big plywood box with cracker tins nailed inside. 6/8 men would out a slow rhythm, hard & loud, the dancers would move their arms, quite jerkily , to the beat often their didn't move. Other times there would be some hula. But the strangest thing was when the girls inched forward just by crimping their toes! My experience of Kiribati dance was very different to this!
