I really like the fact that Kirby isn't just saying "poyo" all the time, and actually shows understanding of what Dedede is saying. This portrayal of him feels more faithful to the games than the anime, and I think we need more of that.

This really nailed King Dedede’s personality. Still holding that grudge to just finally beat Kirby at something for once, but is also willing to put it aside to help him out, as well as make the challenge fair. Similar to how he usually offers Kirby a hammer of his own before facing off in a duel. And as always, the animation was great! Absolutely loved this one!

You know, nobody ever asks about moments like when he knows exactly how to take down Metaknight's Halberd by going for all of the vital components, or how he immediately gets the hang of piloting the robobot suit. It's moments like this that make me think that Kirby might actually be good at chess if he took a second to learn how to play.

That's essentially how Kirby's powers and abilities work. Whenever Kirby exposes himself to something new, he is able to master that skill or ability near instantly and take that skill or ability to a level of grand mastery befitting a super prodigy. All while being an endearingly super cute child in the absolute.

That's the thing about Kirby that this really managed to capture where a lot of other animations fail, he's not stupid, he's young. Just like how Dedede isn't stupid, he's comically short sighted. A lot of the time people will look at the Kirby anime and assume that's their personalities when really in the games they're completely different. I think this animation was based off of the opening to Kirby Planet Robobot, where Dedede is playing chess before being attacked and the fact that Mashed chose to use Kirby and Dedede's game personalities really shows how well they understand the series (Sorry if none of that makes sense I'm really sleepy right now)

Dedede's voice here strikes me as the perfect cross between Shinya Kumazaki's and Ted Lewis's portrayals. It's an interesting depiction I wouldn't mind seeing in official media.

Teaching Kirby how to play chess just so he can legitimately compete with him is DEFINITELY something Dedede would do.

As a dedede fan, you nailed 100% dedede character, also love how he just has waddle dees help him take a bath

This entire animation is the perfect portrayal of how Kirby doesn't just have _good_ friends... ...he has _best_ frenemies.

I always love how all of Kirby's villains are ranting and raving about ruling the world or beating him, but 9 times out of 10 Kirby is just there...existing.

Everything about this is perfect, Meta Knight and Bandana Dee trying to be supportive, Dedede being petty yet compassionate and smart, Kirby's attitude during the whole thing and even the Death Note references! Great job!

This nailed Dedede perfectly. From his outward confidence and bravado, to his insecurities!

Really love how this shows Dedede and Kirby's relationship, Dedede wants to finally win at something for once, but anytime he does he decides to be a good sport and help Kirby, the fact he recognizes what he does and just not care about it just shows that while he wants to defeat Kirby is mostly wanting to prove he can at least be good at something Kirby isn't.

Oh my god. I was so terrified you would get their chracterizations wrong, but man, you did this so well! Plus all the nods to other Kirby characters, and this is one of my favorite animations by you guys.

Yeah after being traumatized by the whole minecraft and Dedede video , my hopes weren't really that high

They absolutely understood who King Dedede is and crafted a perfect short-story, just wonderful.

This is probably the best Kirby animation I've seen in a long time. As a Kirby fan, I'm tired of seeing the same tropes in Kirby fan works, but you've absolutely NAILED the personalities of Kirby and Dedede. (and you made Kirby SPEAK!!!!! I LOVE THAT!) Absolutely fantastic work

This is honestly my new favorite kirby animation. Nailed both of their personalities exactly. Dedede still wanted to win but wasn’t over obnoxious and rude towards Kirby and even helped him out in learning how to play chess and Kirby was just sweet innocent and had fun the whole time. Everything about this is just *chefs kiss* perfect. Beautiful animation and art style too. Also I loved the book title that was on meta knights book lol

This is exactly how I image a game of chess going with the game grumps eventually. Dan sitting there overthinking his moves, believing Arin has become a genius chess player, and Arin just sitting there thinking of something immature and laughing to himself quietly.

This was so good! Painter Seap's animation is great as always, and all the little details - like chess being brought to Dreamland via one of the portals leading to the New World, or Meta Knight's "Supporting Your Sworn Partner's Hair-Brained Schemes" book, which my Metadede-loving heart got a kick out of - really elevated the whole thing. The characterization is great too; it's super refreshing to see a fan animation where Kirby's actually an energetic and kind little kid instead of some all-consuming demon or naive little baby, and Dedede was written PERFECTLY. 10/10, this might just be my favorite Kirby animation ever.

This is really honestly just plain wholesome. I love Kirby animations like this.

As a huge fan of the Kirby series, this animation warms my heart and puts a ginormous smile on my face.

at 5:05 you can see that, since dedede is white, all his lost pieces are strung about without much care implying that when kirby stole one of his pieces they just knocked em to the side. but since kirby is black, their stolen pieces are kept neatly on the other side by dedede. i love when animator puts in tiny jokes like that

I love how the sides of King Dedede are both demons, but, One side is willing to do anything for victory, a ruthless type of evil. The other is a respectable type, wishing for the opponent to have a winning chance at the fight.

Oh my gosh wait. Joronian Pincer... Her real name is only remembered by everyone as a move in CHESS *For those who might not know! One of the computer players in Kirby's Dream Buffet is Q. Joronia, which is very different from the other computer names. The name is a reference to a yokai of a spider who can turn into a beautiful woman. So it's supsected that's Queen Sectonia's real name!

My single most favorite detail is Dedede not having a shoulder angel and shoulder devil, but a ruthless shoulder devil and a clever shoulder devil. That's just such a good visual gag, I can't.

It’s very rare for a mashed video where the characters have their normal personality

Kirby will and forever will be my favorite Nintendo character. I always loved seeing him on Mashed animations because, I could guess Kirby would either be too much to handle or he has the ability to make friends so easily. But the best part about him is no matter how much you try, you can’t beat his scariness. (When he can or wants to be be of course) but also because his permanent ability to just not stay mad at or just get so exhausted from trying so hard.

Who would have thought that the king has such a humble side in teaching Kirby how to play chess?

He just can't stop trying to "Clobber dat there Kirbyh!!!" 😂

Props to you guys Mashed for making a cute funny story and animation about Kirby that isn't just "Kirby is a god, a product of one, or some cursed being that kills people" a completely untrue noncanon "joke" that was never even remotely funny when it was made long ago. This accurately depicts them all, Bandana being really adorable and just being that supportive friend who loves both the King and Kirby so ofc he'd support them both. It just shows how he cares about them all the more when he's the only one left at the event. Kirby being his cute, lovable, and happy go lucky self whilst also being oblivious to some things which it just fits so well that he has no idea what chess even is lol. And Dedede making it seem like Kirby's the one who won't let their grudge go and trying to stay level headed throughout his shenanigans, doing whatever he can just to have a win against the guy. It's all just amazing and refreshing, it's really sad that that's something that's refreshing in this fanbase but boy is it welcome.

Kirby is canonically a god/product of one (play through Soul Melter EX in Star Allies) but that is largely irrelevant, it’s liking making the fact that someone is blonde their entire character, or something; yeah Kirby’s a god-thing but that’s largely irrelevant in the actual game and storyline. It’s not something that needed to be explained, but it got explained and that just raised even more questions, which is possibly the opposite of the purpose of a pause screen. I‘ve only seen one instance of that handled well, though; a part of the old audio drama cd was animated, and instead of drawing Kirby, Elfilin drew Void, and that was the joke- I prefer the other animation of that segment, though, as it had more stuff going on in it- you should be able to maybe find them by looking up Kirby audio cd animated?

@@runeanonymous9760 I've already played through Kirby Star Allies Soul Melter EX and no you're VERY wrong, Kirby is canonically NOT a god/product of one whatsoever. I've done so much research on Kirby lore so don't even try to start with me, Kirby isn't related to Void, Dark Matter, or anything of the sort at all. Void is a being that takes multiple forms depending on the energy gathered and where it came from. In its normal base state, it's a floating purple ball without a face. Hyness in the Japanese version states his clan "worships the matter of darkness" so he wanted to resurrect Void in the form of Dark Matter to destroy the universe. With the combination of his own pure hatred, the corrupted mages, and the dark hearts, he was able to do so. Kirby interfered and when he broke Void out of his cocoon in phase two, Void was vulnerable to Kirby's influence. It created a kind soul within Void, one created by Kirby's influence hence the Kirby like face and Green Greens theme. It's even stated in a developer interview that Hyness only labeled Void a god and the many faces Void makes are because the many thoughts and faces going through Hyness' mind. The kind soul Kirby created starts to clash with the darkness created by Hyness (the Dark Matter looking face) which is why it still attacks you and is able to be hurt by the friend hearts. Ultimately the darkness is still in control, Void's too far gone in the story mode so he just dies when defeated. In the normal Soul Melter, it shows the soul Kirby created starting to surface more and more, "in the Void there lurks...a soul!" Then finally, Soul Melter EX's fight with Astral Birth Void shows the kind soul Kirby created finally winning and overcoming the darkness in him. This is shown by the 8but Green Greens theme, the fact that Void's attacks get progressively more and more predictable as the fight goes on, it's the kind soul (Kirby like face) resisting and holding back the Dark Matter looking side. It's gaining more and more control, at last when it's defeated its able to completely take over getting rid of the darkness in him. THAT'S all what's canon, Kirby this cute little pink puffball was not born from this thing capable of becoming a dark beast lmao. That is INCREDIBLY cursed and thankfully untrue. I already saw that animation and it was good up until they showed that Elfilin had drawn Void because it implies something that's completely not true and cursed, tainted like the whole animation. So again, thank you Mashed for not just doing another dumb off putting untrue "Kirby is a god or product of one" animation. Know your facts and evidence on Kirby before spewing nonsense.

I just want everyone involved with this to know this may be the greatest Kirby animated short I've ever seen. The animation, the writing, the voices, the humor, it's all top notch, magnificent, and feels so true to canon it makes my face hurt. Which is a good thing.

This has to be the best Kirby animation I've ever seen. The animation was great and also the characters. Kirby and Dedede were true to their characters in the games with Kirby being oblivious to everything and Dedede getting agitated at Kirby while Bandana Waddle Dee and Meta Knight are being supportive and also the audience being awesome. Dedede teaching Kirby how to play chess was wholesome.

Dedede is a good guy. He could easily beat Kirby, but instead he decided to educate him how to play, so they can have a fair battle. That’s what a true king does

i generally tread SUPER carefully with kirby animations because dedede is one of my favorites, and he's unfortunately prone to mischaracterization because of the kirby anime, but this knocked it out of the park with how he was portrayed. it really feels like... him.
