Hi! We're the developers of Kinstrife, really cool to see our game on here! Your video is a very fair assessment of the current state of the game and what we've been showcasing. Group AI for example is in very early stages as we've mainly focused on single combat so far. We also agree that the physics-based combat still has its fair share of jank, but you can expect this to improve with time! The good part is that there are already plenty of moments that are only possible with physics-based animations, like weapons getting stuck etc. - and you get an incredible amount of variety in combat interactions out of the box. We'll make sure to highlight these things in some more detail in a future devlog!

Very intrigued by this game, as I love the genre but I can't help thinking of human fall flat when I see the characters moving around but I will say I don't expect it to be this way when you launch the game. Keep up the good work

Hey so I know you wanna stay away from canned animations, but what if, (since humans have a large amount of control over their bodies, which doesn't seem to be the case with the characters), you made animations for body movements but allowed physics to act on the weapons, feet etc., kinda like Rockstar's Euphoria engine, where it isn't just generic animations but still has the structure that a real human has

In their discord they have a lot of focus on historical accuracy which is what i am really looking forward to. The combat although a bit janky looks promising to me, sure it needs work and time but the devs are not rushing it.

See the issue with toting "historical accuracy" is how no game has achieved organized combat accurately, ever, in any game. Sure, in 1v1s there would be hacking and slashing, but in group battles there would be very little "fighting" at all. Opposing sides would taunt each other, and blades would be brandished and flourished as a part of that, but most of the time it would come down to which side got tired, scared, or initiated combat first, then within minutes one side typically broke and retreated which is what actually led to the most casualties.

@@leetlc441 I dont know wich battles you are refering to, im guessing you mean small battles then yeah thats how they went but in the 11th century full scale battles lasted hours, most famously the battle of hastings lasted about 9 hours. But yeah smaller skirmishes of around 100 men i guess would be shorter, dunno if just a few minutes tho. It is true tho that its kind of a difficult prospect to go the historical accurate route in medieval gemes for the reason you mention, in reality is not very epic, certainly not like the movies charging into the enemy like madmen, its fomations, skirmishing, trying to poke at the enemy with a spear in a tight shield formation and using cavarly to harass the sides, im guessing its why kindom come deliverance seem to have cut out the full scale battle they advertised in the trailer.

I think the incohesive combat is kinda a cool aspect, to give it some believability. Like medieval warfare was literally Nobles and peasantry against other nobles and peasants. There were very few professional soldiers, with the Nobles having probably better training and experience, with knights always being the most experienced in combat usually. So it be kinda cool to see like peasants being quite undisciplined and unpredictable, while knights being experienced but cautious.

  • @centurionpetrus1784

Actually there were many professional soldiers in the middle ages. There were many mercenary companies formed of professional fighters going from a war to another. And for the nobles, they were all trained since childhood to become knights, so they were all experts at fighting.

Villages and fortresses would be part of the objectives and we would be able to purchase catapults and siege weapons for us to move into combat. All in a MMO manner, just like PlanetSide 2 does.

Why would i play something other than Mordhau? i can think of a few reasons, Historical accuracy for one and im not a multiplayer kinda guy, i think this game is more targeted to history buffs, very much like KCD and Hellish Quart, the game authors are clearly going with historical accuracy in mind, just based on the weapons and armor ive seen, all fit perfectly in what they used in the 12th and 12th centuries, and the current fighting system if a bit sloppy it certainly looks like theyre trying to emulate actual sword and shield martial arts from the times, i know this cause as a HEMA fencer (historical european martial arts) it resembles a lot of what the manuals instruct, meaning no big epic swings and piruettes, exagerated swings and self exposing while using a shield etc, rather much more tactical and realistic, I just hope they are able to polish it a lot more and make it actually enjoyable.

KCD is great, love the focus on historicaly accurate martial arts but how do you go about making big scale fights fun? the skirmishes in kcd are good enough cause is just less than a hundred men fighting and theyre mostly chaotic ambushes, lacking in the tactical sense wich is very different to how big armies fought, in these cases fancy sword techniques go out the window and its just packed line formations, poking and hacking at each other with spears and pole weapons behind a shield wall wich can go for hours depending on the size of the armies, ive thought about it a lot but i dunno how one goes about making that kind of gameplay fun, im sure Warhorse studios ran into that problem since they just completely cut out the big line battle they advertised in the trailers. bannerlord gets close but its not very historical either, kinda like the vikings show they do the shield wall push wich is nonsense and obviously being that close range they all die in minutes.

It's obviously a long way from release, but right now it looks like people just fling their weapons and fall after them, with absolutely no control on the strike, just overswinging every single strike.
