40:07 Richard Duke of York was of course also descended from an even younger son of Edward III in the male line and was therefore not just the rightfull successor in the female line (if that particular theory is to be followed) but also a Plantagenet of the so defined royal blood. That was because Edmund Mortimer's sister Anne married Richard's father and was Richard's morther.

To add to the story of Edw.II and Piers Gaveston: I am directly descended from Edw I through his daughter, Joan of Acre (sister to Edw. II). These two siblings were close, and Joan often helped her brother when their father was enraged at him. After Edw II became king, he married Joan's daughter, Margaret, from whom I am directly descended, to Piers. Margaret was only about 13 at the time of the marriage. My first response in discovering this was that it was an incredibly cruel thing. But apparently, Piers was kind to Margaret, and she was loyal to him. They had a child. So, Edw II marrying his niece to Piers was actually an act that shows his desire to give Margaret important place in his court, since by then Joan had died, and his niece had come under his care.

Alas, I struggle with keeping the Monarchy straight. This series fascinating and very well done, and I have no difficulty following the story while watching the documentary. However, it is for me, a bit like a song you can sing along with while it is playing, but cannot recite the lyrics without the tune. Trying independently to remember who did what and when, I find, is an uphill battle to say the least. I realize there were all sorts of reasons and traditions, but I cannot help wistfully musing that it might have been easier were there a bit more variety in the line of royal given names..... Ah, well I suppose reducing the effort of confused students a few hundred years in the future was not their uppermost concern. : ) Thank you for the upload, a wonderfully entertaining and informative production !

The monarchy is indeed difficult to follow. So many dukes/duchesses with the same names. Check out Margaret Tudor, queen of Scotland...married James Stewart, their son = James Stewart, HIS daughter =Mary Stuart. Meanwhile, Margaret married Archibald Douglas (when James died), their daughter= Margaret Douglas, married Matthew Stuart (barely related to other Stewarts), THEIR son =Henry Stuart who married Margaret's granddaughter by James Stewart .The original Margaret divorced Archibald and married (a different) Henry Stuart....so...Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of Scots) married Henry Stuart and had a baby named James Stuart who became king of the UK (uniting England and Scotland under one ruler) Oh yeah, and the Stewart/Stuarts seemed to like changing their names. And if you want REAL concussion...try to figure out the characters in the Wars of the Roses. John of Gaunt's randy bunch of illegitimate and legitimate children with their multiple marriages (and intermarriages)

Watching the segment on Henry IV, I feel like he could have avoided a lot of trouble if he had made Edmund, the Earl of March, his heir following his taking of the crown. It would have secured his power base, but also allowed for a smoother transition of power like King Stephen did with Henry II, or even Antigonus III Doson with Philip V of Macedon.

Whilst I like the enthusiasm of the narrator, he has a very simplified and narrow interpretation of Edward II's rule. It was not mere 'homophobia', although prevalent in medieval society, as contemporaries believed the King and Gaveston to just be close friends. The 'lovers' approach is what later historians have theorised as a possibility. In reality, Edward II was a lazy monarch who relegated his kingly duties as secondary to his relationship with Gaverson, who was personally hated by all the English Barons. It seems like the narrator is appealing to the audience through a very modern and narrow lens, tapering down the historical realities of Edward II's reign, which is far more interesting than such a simple narrative. Medieval historian Dan Jones claimed regarding the alleged relationship between Edward and Gaverston: 'To the people of the time, Edward could have been bedding his priest, his page boy, and his horse, as long as he was governing the kingdom properly. To the nobles minds, Gaverston stopped Edward from doing that, and that's why Gaverston had to go.'

So fascinating! Obviously being from New Zealand we didn't go indepth with all of this in our schooling. Being part Scottish - and actually being related to William Wallace - makes it all the more intriguing to me. I do have to say, Jews have had it really rough throughout history - time and time again they bear the brunt of things, even down to been made to wear a yellow star. I did not know this, and was saddened. I look forward to learning about The Tudors in the next episode... so much scandal and betrayal it blows my mind.

The period of Queen Isabelle de France and King Edward II was also an interesting one across the channel. Isabelle was the last daughter of Philippe le Bel King of France. Philippe had three sons who were married to three cousins (from Artois et Burgundy). The older, Louis had until now, only one child, a girl, Jeanne. Unfortunatly, two of the three princesses married to the king'sons were found guilty of adultery and jailed for life. But the reign of Louis II didn't last long. When the time happened to crown the successor, in an effort to put aside the only child Louis had, little Jeanne, the Concil elabotated a new law, presumely based on old writing from religious texts, to forbid women from becoming leader of the country (a flower cannot be lion). The law was adopted, the little Jeanne got nothing. But life can turn around. One after the other, the two last descendants of Philippe Le Bel died within a very short period of time. Now England is with Queen Isabelle from France and her son, futur Edward III still young, and France, with a dead king with no male child is wondering who would become the new king. Suddenly, coming from the other side of the channel, an ecclesiastic has appeared in Court and asked for the trone of France, in the name of, not Isabelle, but in the name of Edward the III. This dispute will be the beginning of "La Guerre de 100 ans", believed by many people , to be stopped only by an holy event: the burning of Jeanne d'Arc. (Version by Maurice Druon, "Les Rois Maudits") Very, very fascinating to read.

If you actually look at contemporary sources and historical chronicles, homophobia as we know it wasn't at the root of the hate of Edward II and his favorites (Gaveston and later Despenser), rather the intemperance with which how he favored them. They didn't think of sexuality as we do today, applying modern terminology does more harm than help.

Exactly I can’t blame them for not liking him and wanting him further down on the list considering how he treated Jewish people such as killing their leaders and later expelling them from their home in England which was not repealed until over 300 years later. I would personally want him to be viewed as the worst of these kings and on the bottom of this list due to how he treated Jewish people.

He is slightly wrong about Charles VI. For one, he is blatantly wrong about who Henry V marries, Henry marries Charles VI daughter, not sister. This minor detail is actually very important, because although Charles was mad he didn't dis-inherit the Dauphine willy-nilly, Charles VI wife, Isabeau of Bavaria was an adulteress and had taken up with one of Charles VI rivals, Phillip the Good,, Duke of Burgundy. Rumors begin to spread that the Dauphine of France is actually Phillip's son. (ironic because the Dauphine eventually murders Phillip the Good) Charles for some reason is only certain about Catherine's parentage, and none of his other children, because of this Henry V's son, Henry, is the only surely legitimate descendant of Charles VI and so he is made heir. Of course the Dauphine defeats Henry VI with Joan o Arc and takes France, he then becomes Charles VII and delivers the final blow to the English in the hundred years war, taking every english continental territory save for Calais.

I've just bought a book about Louis the Lion, 1223 - 26. LOUIS: THE FRENCH PRINCE WHO INVADED ENGLAND by Catherine Hanley. (Yale University Press) I think he'd be far better known if he wasn't eclipsed by his legendary father, Philippe Augustus, 1180 - 1223. The French king who doubled the size of his lands by taking most of the French lands controlled by the Plantagenets into Capetian hands. Jim Bradbury has written the best known English language biography of Philippe Augustus, and a good volume about The CAPETIANS.
