Heard this song through the podcast "The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill" and wow, never have I heard a song that so perfectly captures my complicated relationship with the Christian evangelical church. The dichotomy of wanting to serve the Lord and live the gospel, but also feeling so skeptical and untrusting of churches, big and small, due to religious trauma. Not to mention the guilt of possibly being complacent in damage done to others.

When you really consider the disparity that exists between those preaching the gospel and those living the gospel, these lyrics stir emotions and reach into the depths of your spirit to produce change. I discovered Kings Kaleidoscope a little over a year ago, and since then they have easily been the best group I've heard in Christian music, in terms of musicality and transparency through clever lyricism. Stay the course gentlemen and continue to give Christ all the glory.

These are words from a man who understands the hurt, disillusionment, and disorientation you go through after leaving a dysfunctional church. In the end, we end up dazed and confused and Jesus weeps over his flock. I was shook when I first heard this song. He somehow captured the struggle between trying to please our Savior, own selfish motives, twisted altogether with sins of the church.

When you’ve been serving in a church, under an abusive head pastor, it hits hard. 💔 God is good though. I think that’s where this song is getting me. Is my allegiance to church/pastor, or God? Did we as humans split the church over our control issues? Asking God to paint beauty over our broken, disjointed mess. Looking for real religion. Tired of scripted sermons instead of Biblical exegesis. Asking Christ to turn the tables when we rearranged them after he flipped them in the temple.

The band member from the MH bonus episode is really the only one who told a story of clinging to Christ, pushing forward and overcoming the abuse instead of spending years in therapy, abandoning church altogether, and deconstructing faith. Not trying to dismiss the pain, but the Gospel is very much a story of redemption. Don't worry about MD, his day in the High Court of our Lord will come. In the meantime, look to God, don't create an empathy culture where you spend your life nursing wounds. Once you feel healing rush in, get up, keep moving forward, keep anticipating the coming of the Kingdom. Don't lose heart or faith, God is greater than our pain and in His sovereignty even allows us to experience these things. So Don't live life in light of hardship but in light of victory in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let the dead things be buried. Then death is a door, even a reward for the believer knowing they will stand before Christ having finished the race, scars and all. Faith in tact.

The Rise of Mars Hill podcast brought me here. Wow. Cannot get this song out of my head. The podcast is fantastic and the featured music raises the quality of production even more. May God be glorified as we grapple with our hopeless humanity and desperate need for a Savior.

I'm quite torn with how I feel about Mark Driscoll now that I've listen through 'the rise and fall of mars hill.' He has had such a positive influence on my own life and ministry but looking at the consistent allegations against him, I'm surprised that he can have such a gifted way of explaining scripture, yet miss it himself.

I've experienced something similar with a small church that I left recently, and now I'm beginning to realize how abusive the whole structure is and how unbiblical and ungodly the leadership style was. However, I came to Christ there under those pastors and I learned to know and low God as my Father, Savior and Lord and for that I'll forever be thankful to them that they created a space for that. Nonetheless, God has led me to believe that my love for Him means looking at the truth no matter what, and that means looking at all the abuse I witnessed and experienced. God can and will use broken people to make himself known (literally ANY bible story ever) and that's the thought that helped me. My pastors in all their character flaws and power mongering still loved the Lord to some extent and allowed Him to move in the church to some extent, and my Lord and Savior took that opportunity to catch me, and I'll forever be grateful to Him for that! That doesn't negate the mistakes my pastors made, nor do the mistakes negate that deep down they really do want to serve God. I believe they are not willing to pay the price of genuinely reflecting, that would be too hurtful and inconvenient, but they nonetheless Love the Lord to some extent. Now all I can do is forgive them and learn from their mistakes. I hope this helps you :)

Many will miss heaven by 18 inches, the distance from their head to their heart. They know about Christ, but do not know Him. - Steve Lawson I don’t know if Mark is sincerely an immature believer or an unbeliever but this is just a thought
