You just can’t beat B&M. They may not be the most extreme but they sure do produce some damn good quality.

I’m not gonna lie, the quality of their most recent coasters has got me worried slightly

As a Virginian who rode Volcano 4 times, *nothing* can replace it, it truly was a uniquely awesome ride. Given that, I actually think this is a great choice and I'm genuinely excited about it. The only B&M wing coaster I've ridden is Gatekeeper and I actually really liked it.

Gatekeeper is awesome, and an argument can be made that Thunderbird is even better, just because of the launch. I'm hoping that this ride will combine the best of those 2 rides. Give us a great launch plus a complete layout! I'm still bummed that I never got to ride Volcano.

Gate keeper was underwhelming.

As a Maryland native who has visited Kings Dominion and has ridden volcano probably over a hundred times I think this is a worthy replacement. It's a big fun launched coaster that people will love. Nice work Kings Dominion I will be there when it opens with my son ready to ride.

It would be really cool if they themed the trains to a bi-plane since the wing seats kinda look like the wings on the plane. The front of the train could have a propeller and engine

There is a coaster in Abu Dhabi's Ferrari World, called Flying Aces, which has a propeller up front and even thought it isn't a technically a wing coaster, there are 4 seats in each row and the 2 most outer seats are hangin off the rails.

Glad y'all touched on why KD may be nervous about innovation. Hypersonic and Volcano were innovative and while they were great rides, they both bit KD. Can't blame them for going a little "safer", but park goers, including me, are gonna love this ride.

And i305 goes too hard for most of the GP as well. (I think most like it but it's not re-rideable for the average guest). I think this will be the average parkgoers favorite in the park tbh

At least volcano was able to operate without having to close for hours on end due to its technical problems.

As a kings dominion fan, i get what sarah is saying, but I think this addition is perfect. Kings dominion already gave us timmy and timbers we can not ask for more

@Sonic-gy7kq Maybe they were hoping for a 2nd launch to make it less like Thunderbird? There's definitely space that could've been used, but this layout has a solid variety of elements as is. Just hope the airtime hill is actually profiled for real floater air, not the dead space Gatekeeper's has.

@Sonic-gy7kq I'd probably be more excited about a B&M surf, too. But if KD were to get one, it should go in where Dinosaurs Alive was, next to Grizzly. Surf coasters can be popular, but only if they're close to a park entrance so it's one of the first rides you do.

Yeah bro after watching POV I was like dang they really cheaped out with 1 launch. But that makes the ride more complex. More block zones. More issues. More money. Shorter coaster = more through put, at the end of the day.@@brianfoss571 Edit: I believe B&M knows how to make airtime hills that work. Its their restraints (horrible vest restrains) that prevent you from experiencing the sensations. Those restraints lock down on me too much and prevent me from getting a full breath in, which always scares me and hurts on the break run. Nobody likes vest restraints.

I think this is a great fit for KD. They needed a B&M. I personally wouldn’t have put it in that part of the park but oh well. By the way, Gatekeeper has a dive loop after the first set of keyholes. I wish instead of 2 corckscrews we had at least one zero g roll but it is what it is. I hope they go with like a temple escape theme, that would be cool. It could have grey track and a near miss through a temple.

that element isn’t really a dive loop, it’s more sideways like a wraparound cork screw or smth, the dive loop will feel more the gatekeepers first drop at a higher speed, still insane

@marcusmcgraw3519 It's good for parks to add variety to their inversion layout. Dominator has a vertical loop and cobra roll, so it's nice that this other B&M at the same park doesn't duplicate those elements. Glad the corkscrew's profiled differently here, too - it's more of a stall.

@@brianfoss571 I see your point and don’t totally disagree with it. Your comment makes sense in the fact that you don’t want to have 2 of the same type of coasters in the park cuz it’s redundant. I also like the inversions in this one, and think they’re original I just have issues with all of the nitpicky stuff that comes from enthusiasts. Nothing is ever enough for these people. It’s why I refrain from ever calling myself one, despite being really into coasters

The airtime hill on Fenix in Toverland is one of the best elements of the ride in my opinion :)

@@CoasterStudiosHonestly I feel like there’s not much else they could have put there instead of an airtime hill. They had to go up and over something, they were running out of speed, and if they did another inversion they probably would have had to go much higher due to the ‘wing span’ of wing coasters.’ Don’t want a valley point can tell you that.

As my home park I am very interested and excited to see how this fits into the skyline and that portion of the park. If you look closely at the plans, that thing stretches almost all the way to the Let's Get Wild show area. My mind is totally blown with this!!

I always knew it was gonna be a B&M Wing coaster. Can’t wait!

This I think will feel like Thunderbird and that’s a more forceful ride than most wing coasters.

I rode Volcano opening year and it blew ever one away! I think thus is a safe bet for KD. They went all out on I305 and that didn't work out great. I think it will be good.

This is right in line with what I expected to replace Volcano. Unlike many, I never had much attachment or love for Volcano, so I didn’t have high expectations for its replacement. I also hope it’s not orange. Although Tumbili is green, I wouldn’t be opposed to a bright green.

Even those who did have an attachment shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations, given how boring Volcano was with its layout after the launches. Notice how they left out the part that Volcano KILLED all your momentum after the twisting drop back to the station. Notice how they don’t criticize the coaster for that when they should. It’s cuz they’re burying their heads in the sand to the truth

Here’s how I look at it. I think this is a perfect replacement for Volcano, and the reason goes back to the history of Thunderbird. I remember hearing something about Will Koch loving Volcano and wanting that at Holiday World, and then it morphed into a launched B&M Wing. Thunderbird is Holiday World’s Volcano! This will be a great fit at Kings Dominion and I’m excited to ride it!

Its perfect since there isnt another wing coaster at a park anywhere nearby. An the launch element element pays tribute to Volcano. Will definitely be something to draw crowds, KD could use something to boost there lineup and this will do that perfectly. With this, I305 and Twisted Timbers they easily compete with BGW and Hershey again.

IMO, I think this will be a fantastic addition to the park. I like that it's launched, and is a unique layout, I just hope it has decent theming and near-misses. Volcano was one of my favorite rides at KD, and I knew we weren't getting a super intense thoosie pandering addition to the park, we got i305 and TT for that, KD needs a new crowd pleaser. (Dominator is an underrated workhorse of the park for a reason...) And this will do just that. I get what you mean by it should have been in a different spot, but I think it will work just fine there. Heck, it's better than the off-the-shelf model that was initially slated to go there before it was pushed aside for Jungle-X and Tumbili....

Every park needs a winged coaster!

I didn't grow up near Kings Dominion, but it was about 10 minutes from my cousin's house. I went to KD in 2012 and got one ride on Volcano. The launch was maybe the best moment on any coaster I had ridden, but I actually didn't really like the rest of the layout. I remember feeling kind of disappointed because it was so hyped up, but the launch was (in my opinion) the only good part of the ride. I really wish I could have reridden it before it closed. I think 19 year old me had very different opinions on coasters, and I may have liked it more today.

I have had a feeling for a while that KD was always going to put their next risky coaster in the Anaconda spot and go safer in the Volcano spot.

KD is my home park and I’m an entusiast so as soon as I got the notification from kdfans, I was screaming in excitement!!

I think with minor tweaks this ride could've been a lot better. I was hoping for a more intense lay out like Fenix. But hopefully the cutback gives hang time, end of the launch gives airtime, and those corkscrews arent totally forceless like GK and Wild Eagles is.

That corkscrew after the dive loop will definitely give hang time regardless. Should be an awesome first three elements after the launch!

looking at the concept the cutback is gonna be insane, especially on the right side being flipping under the track at that speed and then the short hang time above the path, i can’t wait!

As a Virginian who has road the Volcano many times (first big coaster credit was Volcano), I like this. However, I miss hanging coasters. The only ones I’ve been on were Volcano and Great Bear at Hershey. That being said, I’ve never ridden a B&M wing and I can’t wait

Awesome! Exactly what I was hoping for! I love B&M wing coasters, right up there with hypers as my favorite models from B&M. I think this could top Grizzly for 3rd best in the park. I never got to ride Volcano, not visiting the park until July 2018, so my perspective may not be the same as those that got to experience it.

I so enJOY the both of you! I wouldn’t be surprised if the plan is to bring an innovative coaster to another area of the park. That would be a great way to quash the criticism and comparison of Volcano…

KD is my home park, I went every year multiple times from 2010-2018. Went once in 19, then covid hit and I haven’t been back since. As someone who LOVES roller coasters but doesn’t get to travel as much, I’m really excited to ride this in 2025 for the 50th anniversary My dad tells stories about how he went to KD for its first year in 1975, where tickets were like $7.50 and the biggest attraction was Rebel Yell. He still loves coasters, rides just about everything, even intense rides like i305, so I think he’ll be interested in this new experience! I will admit, nothing can replace Volcano tho. Where else can you be riding a roller coaster launching out of a freakin volcano! It was one of the coolest experiences ever imo, even if it was a short ride

Looks like a nice edition. I haven't been to KD since 1997 and never got to ride Volcano. It looked like a very thrilling ride that i regret not riding. I completely understand attachment as I'm still a little miffed at BG for BBW. Planning on making it up though this summer and going to both parks.

Ive been pleased in the iron menace back story. So i would assume they would do the same for any major cedar fair coaster addition going forward

This will work just fine. If themed properly and taking the cake for the first wing coaster in VA, this is a good investment - reliable, GP-friendly, and filling in the area where Volcano was should fit nicely. I'll be there in 2025 for sure!

This ride looks to be a great fit for the park. I live in the UK and have seen how popular wing coasters are, and I can comfortably say that this ride will be successful for the park. Vest restraints on wing coasters, even the newer ones, dig into my shoulders, but they do not take away too much from the ride experience. I can understand the disappointed enthusiasts about this investment. Considering I305 and Twisted Timbers are in the same park, it does feel a bit spoiled to expect every new coaster to be catered for them.

A Royal Blue color for the coaster would be epic. Purple would be pretty rad too

Was hoping for a launched Gerstlauer Infinity, but this will be great I believe.

I love your love for Volcano. I only got to ride it once in 1999, the year I graduated high school (yes I'm aging myself), and the few times I went back to KD it was always closed. But I love love LOVED that coaster. I think it must have been my first double launch at the time, and probably only my second (or third after Flight Of Fear) launch after Batman & Robin The Chiller at SFGA, my home park. I bet if I rode Volcano now, it wouldn't hit the way it did for me 24 years ago of course. I'll clearly be heading back down to VA for 2025 (especially since Pantheon wasn't ready last time we went down in 2021!)

My question is how are they going to make this area cohesive? Along with the jungle expedition, theming? Because I 305 is going to look really odd with the restoration of this area .

how can you make commnets on a roller coaster that you have not ridden. Its like making comments on a movie you have not seen.. I appericate your channel and POV, for the fans of Volcano who rode it, loved it and miss it, It was very iconic to the park.

Nothing will ever replace volcano. The vibe it had will never be replaced. I even enjoyed waiting in those long queues as a season pass owner.

To be fair regarding the airtime hill, whether it’s actually effective in actually delivering some airtime or not remains to be seen, but it helps break up the monotony of inversions and highly banked turns. I feel like it’d be fair to say it’s more of a fun, breather kind of element before the proverbial grand finale.

The air time hill on Fenix is great!

Every time I go to KD, I always leave feeling like this park is missing a hyper or a blitz. They have multiple wooden coasters, multiple positive G machines, and then twisted timbers. The wing coaster fills a void in their line up, but not the one they needed to fill.

When you say that this is the first dive loop on a Wing, doesn't Gatekeeper have one or is that turnaround element called something else?

Kings Dominion is one of my new “home parks”(3 hours away). I never got the chance to ride Volcano so I really don’t have any connection to it. However I have ridden all of the wing coasters in the US and think that Thunderbird is the best by a long shot. This ride to me seems like a bigger longer version of thunderbird especially if that inline twist has theming around it. So I’m completely fine if this is the addition for 2025.

Agree that Thunderbird is awesome. The stats from the NoLimits recreation put it almost identical in size to Thunderbird, which I think is great. Shorter trains, tighter maneuvers, and less chance for dead spots as you have on the 4000+ foot wing coasters that seem to crawl through many of the elements. Hopefully they don't keep it orange, but otherwise should be a fantastic addition!

The airtime hill is suppose to offer crazy airtime, its suppose to mix the layout up a little so it isnt just inversions and turns.

*not the only dive loop on a wing in America* gatekeeper has one by the park entrance separating the two zero-G rolls… it’s small, and there’s probably some other “name” for the element, but let’s be real, it’s a dive loop.

I moved to the DC area in 2012 but didn't get to KD until after Volcano closed, sadly. I'm really upset that I missed it, but I know how awesome it looked and how many people absolutely loved it, so I think that KD was never going to be able to "replace" it - and as such I'm not mad about this launched wing being located there. After the failure of I-305 to be the GP magnet that KD was probably hoping for, (and Tumbili not being that either despite being the best of its kind,) KD absolutely needed to find a new GP magnet, and this was the open spot they had. (And honestly I've never cared that much about locations for rides unless they're super hard to get to.) I'm betting we get that next innovative, top-level thrilling coaster when Anaconda finally gets replaced. My biggest worry at the moment is that it looks too short for my liking! I always like more prime ride time, and I'm not sure this is gonna deliver on that...

I used to live in Virginia and while the number of parks doesn't break any records, the two main parks are excellent. As you point out, the state does unexpectedly good with thrill coasters. But for not being California or Florida, it also does very well with themed coasters. Premier Rides Launched Indoor coaster themed to science fiction Intamin Launched indoor straddle coaster themed to a haunted storm Indoor/outdoor Zierer Launched coaster themed to a haunted forest Premier Rides Launched family coaster themed to an action movie set And even the theming and plazas around InvadR, Alpengeist Geist and Tumbili are all quite good for not being Disney/ Universal/Herschend. Also, the theming on water rides like Pompeii, Roman Rapids and White Water Canyon are pretty good (Pompeii especially.)

Volcano was a whole other beast I’m so glad I got to ride that

I know you say that the airtime hill might be a dead spot, but what about Fenix? That airtime hill was fantastic!

Yeah not only a US park but Taylor’s home park 😁 I think this is a great addition! You guys are too young to remember but Volcano used to be Smurf mountain and Time Warp aka Rotor. Haven’t been to Kings Dominion in a while. Used to go every summer it’s my sister’s home park but she unfortunately doesn’t like Roller coasters anymore 😢

Volcano originally opened in 1979 as lost world fantasy mountain with three rides within the mountain. They were journey to atlantis/ haunted river. Land of dooz/surf mountain (an arrow powered mine ride coaster) and time shaft,a standard chance rotor. Unfortunately when paramount acquired the park they slowly began removing the original attractions from within the mountain...originally there were plans to retheme haunted river to the film Congo but after the film was a box office flop those plans were scrapped and Volcano was installed instead.

⁠@@michaezell4607 I got to see second version with the smurfs and Time Shaft. Never got to ride the River ride or Volcano. Also missed out on I think it was called Hypersonic XLC. That didn’t last long but it and Volcano looked amazing! 😎

Kings Dominion should have worked with Vekoma and put in a Vekoma second generation Flying coaster with launches, like Fly at Phantasia Land in Germany. I think this wing coaster will do fine.

Volcano: up the lift and made the bend. Then WHAT? The roller coaster when so fast that I could not catch a breath until the time it stopped. I thought I was going to pass out and have people come to my rescue to resuscitate me. Over all about the ride. I LOVED IT...

The airtime on Fenix at Toverland slaps so I don't think that hill is gonna be an issue

I don’t know why I’m somewhat underwhelmed - I usually love B&M coasters. Though as you said it should be a good fit for the park and a big crowd pleaser. Cedar Fair seems to think all their parks need a B&M invert so it’s surprising we don’t have one at KD yet - Banshee was great, and a fantastic investment for KI.

Orange is such a popular color choice for Roller Coasters

Nothing can replace Volcano. My ride count on that was near 50 been so long I forget exact. But this does look like a nice ride.

I was really hoping for it to be some crazy huge world record breaking coaster like a Gerstlauer Infinity Coaster to try to beat the smilers inversion record. Or the first RMC T-Rex

I think this is a good addition for this park. What would kings dominion put in that would be better that bgw doesn’t have or that a mid tier cedar fair park would get?

My hope (though I knew it would never happen) was for them to rebuild the mountain as the lost world. I still remember pulling up to the park one year, seeing scaffolding on the mountain and thinking “I sure hope haunted river isn’t closed”. Volcano was fun, but everytime I rode it I felt a little disappointed at what was sacrificed for it.

Its really great about this new coaster. I've loved roller coasters for a long time and was an ACE member in 80's. What really sucks about the new coaster is I am no longer allowed to rode them. I had back surgery to mend broken vertebrates..

For the colour stuff, they could keep the orange if they add paint detail like nemesis to make it unique.

I definitely agree that it will probably be a bird theme since all of the other rides in the area are supposed to be temples of the different animals that give you the powers of the animals they represent

I think they will repaint some of the Flight of Fear building to make it look like more of a shack. Maybe they could add vines and lushery to hide the building too.

I really like thunderbird so I’m really excited about this.

This layout for a B&M launched wing coaster is very accurate imo.
