@@557deadpool I actually have paid attention and I've found that the amount of plotholes, retcons and contrivances in Kingdom Hearts exceeds Metal Gear significantly.

The individual games are surprisingly simple. "Bad guys are doing bad things; kill they ass." But the story as a whole literally requires a spreadsheet to understand basic motivations. Hopefully, 3 explains why Xehanort even believes in the prophecy to begin with. Great video dude. You did the best you could.

You’re only the second one I’ve seen put this whole series together correctly. Good shit man.

The game very quickly managed to stand on its own despite the FF characters. They were a neat selling point but people turned out to like the original ones enough that they realised they became superfluous. They're still cool to have around though.

There's an after-credits scene in KH3 where they tease FF characters coming back. I'm not completely sure that's what they're implying but maybe they might come back in DLC.

This was amazing. You have managed to boil this story down to its essential parts better than anyone else I've seen on KZread. Bravo! As a diehard fan of this series. I know better than most how utterly incomprehensible this story is. It never stopped me from loving it, though. But I'm glad recaps like yours exists so that other people can experience this franchise that has meant so much to me. But, yeah, Nomura is a goddamn awful writer. Just keeping it real...

I played Kingdom Hearts 1 when I was very young and didn't understand.... I thought with the release of KH3 I should give it another go since I'm probably old enough to understand. But nope. This whole thing just gave me a headache lol.

The opening is spot on and hilarious.

6:36 is so true. It's like the Keyblade War and all the events that led up to it were erased once the rebrand happened. It's treated as an alternate universe story now and somehow it still is relevant in III but it didn't happen in Union X? Marvel & DC have a habit of doing this shit but now KH has jumped the shark and on top of that, time travel?!

So KH's story barely has anything to do with Disney? That's so dumb.

Really amazing breakdown of this series. I don't think Nomura is a bad writer however, when he intends a sequel, as KH1-KH2 is both comprehensible and bombastic at the same time with a conclusion that really should have been the end for Sora's journey. Literally everything important was wrapped up for him and the final showdown with the big bad was stellar. It's when the game tried to make a sequel in the form of DDD that the problems became really bad to me. Introducing time travel as a central plot device and bringing back all the big bads we've already killed then turning them into 13 people was just.. bad. I wouldn't mind if the series had new protagonist completely with no connections to the original, because I feel Nomura does his best when it's something new and when what he intends to end, actually fucking ends. Again great vid and cheers for KH3 coming out, hopefully it's as good as 2

What do you mean? If you mean development teams change, then why is it bad that KH does it? I guarantee you the team that worked on smash 64 had little to no members that worked on smash ultimate. Besides, smash bros. wise he'd probably end up having a similar moveset to Robin, which smash needs more of imo.

Your incredulity is earned, however Riku wielding the Keyblade is like... one of the main plot points of Kh1. But it makes sense that it might get lost in the shuffle.

Chi is actually still canon, they just went back in time and had their memories erased so everyone experienced the same events but with a different outcome. This is actually a plot point in Union X as your character has flashbacks of their previous experiences before their memories got reset.

The pause at 2:33 i almost cried

That was impressive, nice work at tying it up nicely.

And i though Metal Gear was confuseing, but, damn. I am lost with this.

Fucking hate dream drop distance right when the story was getting simple they bring this convoluted time travel.

Now that it's released and I've watched through the end of the game and I had to say it's a mess really. I kinda relieved FFXV was under Tabata direction, even it's still a mess but comparing 2 or 3 years difference of development and the end result is a still mess. And the emotional ride FFXV is super different from KH3, it felt this KH3 characters making a return and do a reunion hug but I don't feel anything even I'm watching FFXV playthrough at the end it does hits me. Nomura is great making a concept story really, it really looks cool or some shit, but now that I've seen enough it's kinda enough for Nomura.

The story is convoluted no doubt, but its argubly the reason it has been so loved(and hated i suppose) for all these years. It would NOT be the block buster series it is if every game was just "boy with key checks out whats going on in this disney movie, oh hey a final fantasy character."

The biggest problem with Kingdom Hearts for me is the convulted af storyline and I'm hoping that Kingdom Hearts 3 will some how clarify it abit although given it's Kingdom Hearts it's probably only going to get more and more convoluted lol

i am in the series,i understand it. but i just cant ignore missed potential and bad writing,story is honestly more meaningful than gameplay for me as long as the game is playable(i mean,i cant exactly enjoy a good story when i cant even get to the cutscenes). the problem is just that nomura does not understand the series,there is just no way kh1 or days are in the same continuity as kh3. i want it to fit and i see the connections,but it literally just contradicts itself. and not even in the usual retconny way of information just replaced with new information that is enjoyable as itself. i genuinely dont enjoy the new information. cant exactky say that kh3 was not worth the wait tho. it was a fun ride to play a kh game blind for once. i only saw some spoilers on really obvious things unlike how i went into my first game after already knowing the entire thing story and gameplaywise

The first game is fairly simple, well written, and overall executed pretty greatly. CoM is pretty alright as well but the rest is when Nomura tried to expand is writing chops and failed miserably. People only look back positively on 2 for the combat that’s really only excellent if you’re playing the Final Mix version on the highest difficulty and doesn’t even really get fleshed out until the post game side stuff. The first game is clunky, but it’s still the best overall experience in my opinion.

i like kh1,com and days for the story honestly. kh2 only has roxas(and he gets trashed) for its story and after days,it goes into retconny bs because nomura having literally 0 idea how to write further. bbs is not really well written,but has neat elements in there recoded barely relates to anything exceot com at all and it is better for it 3d just makes bbs into a big problem,invalidating the first few games 0.2 be like:"hey,here you have why mickey changed clothes in kh1" kh3 just throws every bit of bs 3d did under the rug and makes its own problems while acting all like "that is how it is,everything makes sence"

I wouldn’t call the first game well written it still had tons of confusing moments just not as much as the other games and I disagree calling the best experience since the platforming and the level design didn’t age well deep jungle was an absolute bore of world almost as bad as arendelle in kh3 not saying it’s bad but I wouldn’t call it the best experience.

actually,khux takes place in a dataworld meant to keep a few survivors save beyond the keybladewar in x. also the reason why the first half of the game is a retelling of x. i seriously dont even know why they retconned x out of importance for the timeline despite it still happening,but they appearently also dont know. nomura wrote x back into importance in a recent update.(this series is dumb)

Looking back Kingdom Hearts should have ended at II. Destroying his Heartless and his Nobody Xemnas should have killed Xehanort not caused his original self to return.

AGAIN, if ANYONE is slightly interested in the story of Kingdom Hearts play them in order like in this video, ALSO, if you have EVER watched or read the shonen jump franchise: Naruto/Naruto Shippuden, most of the main characters' roles featured in Kingdom Hearts are quite similar to said characters from the Naruto/Naruto Shippuden franchise.

+The4thSnake Pretty good video man. Although, Chi and Union Cross are actually separate canon installments. Union X taking place after the Keyblade War, in a place similar to the Data Scape (I think), where it's basically the same world, but made to where the war never happened. And the only ones who remember the real world are the people who became the new Foretellers, the one person (unknown to me at the time of this comment) who killed one of the chosen new Foretellers, and kind of the player character, who doesn't outright remember the real world, but has dreams of it. This is why when talking about Kingdom Hearts, you have to cover every major detail (even if that's just about every detail). It's pretty important.

I now understand why there is a facebook page dedicated to saying FUCK KINGDOM HEARTS.

The story is complicated for kids and adults.

So KH3 released and surprisingly... It kinda answered all remaining questions about the Xehanort saga (albeit some of them were kinda vague answers) but it also planted some new questions and left some unanswered as they probably are important plot points for what i'll call "the X saga" Only thing i'm frustrated about is that it made time travel EVEN MORE confusing, i think Xehanort wasn't given a satisfactory ending at all & this has some of the most BORING worlds of the series (Although it also has the Toy Story and Monsters Inc worlds which are probably my favorite in the whole series) Also, no FF characters, i mean i get it if they don't have much more to do with them but god damn, they weren't even mentioned (If fucking Donald & Goofy with no keyblades can show of for the final battle against the Xehanorts, why can't Zack, Cloud, Leon, Yuffie & Tifa show up? Why wouldn't the heroes search AS MUCH help as possible? It's just dumb having this characters and not using them, i'm not even a FF fan and i'm pissed about it) Like you, i just want KH4 to be something more SIMPLE, not a game which needs me to play another 3 games to understand the plot

I hate to be that guy I really do, but I’ve gotta point this out. Kingdom Hearts II did NOT retcon the Heartless, they were always implied to be made from hearts, not bodies: “The hearts taken by the Heartless become Heartless themselves. Though I lack proof, I am confident in this hypothesis.” - Ansem's Report 4 You even show a cutscene from the first game at 2:25 where we see a heart become a Heartless, so I don’t know how you missed that. Also, Ventus is not the reason Sora has a Keyblade. That was the fanbase’s interpretation and Nomura has debunked it in an interview (though I struggle to find the exact interview where he did).

The body dissappeared and the heart itself became the heartless. His heart created a soldier so maybe he couldn't become a nobody? This game still confuses me

@@knivy6160 It's mentioned in KHII that only individuals with strong hearts create Nobodies when they become Heartless. The type of Heartless they become doesn't seem to have any bearing on that.

I was thinking about getting into this series but fuck that. This shit makes no sense no matter how simple you make it. I watched Clemp’s videos on the KH games and am still confused. Jesus, and I thought Nier and Drakengard was complicated. When Yoko Taro’s work is more easier to follow than you know you lost the plot.

What the fuck. That "Story So Far" shit is outright insane.

I consider sora, reku etc as final fantasy characters, most of the games has a different set of characters anyway

Kingdom hearts is the living of "If it sounds cool, we'll fit it into canon somehow regardless of how nonsensical it sounds. My gripe is that if they are going to bring all of these guys are going to come up with some blatant off the cuff reason for why all of these dead characters are coming back full form, why not bring fan favorite ones like I don't know...ROXAS AND XION! I'm making a fanfic where heartless are in the real world, and somehow I still think I could make it more coherent than the actually story currently is right now.

The next time we are meeting up with Sora is in III where he'll (assumedly) save all those people. And thats beside the fact he didn't even know about some of them until recently, like Xion.

Sora's Keyblade is his own. It wouldn't make sense to say Ven's damaged heart gave it to him, even though Sora and Roxas were able to use theirs at the same time, while Ven's heart passed to Roxas. The original browser game is still entirely canon and different from Union X. It was not replaced. Time doesn't pass in the Realm of Darkness whatsoever. Aqua hasn't aged at all. I'm actually curious where you got the 2 from... Also, Xion is best girl.

Chi is still canon wym? Unchained Chi is a data simulation of the events of Chi minus the events preceding the Keyblade War (Which Chi Back Cover explains from the Foretellers perspective) and Union Cross is a continuation of Chi following the events after the Keyblade War.

The story isn't great, but easy to get invested in, and the characters are likeable enough to get incredibly invested in. Honestly, the key to not getting confused is just rolling with it

As much as I like the idea of a game that allows me to visit different Disney worlds alongside Donald and Goofy, I just can't get into this series because of this complicated plot bullshit. And it's a shame because KH3 looks phenomenal in trailers and I really like the potential of Disney worlds I could experience, but I know I am gonna be bombarded by so much shit from other games that I have neither the time or nor will to experience, plus I already have my time full with other games and other things outside gaming. Plus it all have that air of cringey weeabo fan-fiction. I think I'll pass... Still, great work trying to summarize it. I can't imagine how much of a pain in the ass it must have been.

there are movies specificly in kh3 so that people dont have to play those games(which makes no sence since the majority is on ps4 anyways and xbox guys probably dont play the series). i gotta say tho,nothing lost in passing since the game is just okay. mixture of disney being weird when it comes to their ips,nomuras writing and the development being weird

Sora's keyblade didn't originally belonged to him. It was implied when Riku in KH1 took it. The reason why Sora got one is because Riku fell in the darkness so the keyblade didn't find him worthy and choose to go to Sora. Ventus heart is the reason why Sora and Roxas could dual wield tho.

@@UnifiedEntity first off I think the quote you're saying is "we did what the keyblade did, and moved down the list" said by Xehanort when talking about him finding a vessel. Which is what the keyblade did when Riku was taken by the darkness it "moved down the list" to the next person who had a heart of light which was Sora. The kingdom key was initially meant for Riku

Great vid, and yah you're half right, Sora willed himself to have a keyboard and is the only one that ever did, he was not given access to it by Ventus. Roxas however was, he can wield two by accessing both Sora and Ventus' heart. Sora only ever drew on vens power to protect his heart in 3d when he had the armor.

KH1 still stands, Sora wasn't originally meant to wield the Keyblade, Riku was, but when Riku fell into Darkness the Kingdom Key chose Sora, for no other reason than the Light in his heart, he is the only Keyblade wielder not to be bequeathed a Keyblade AFAIK. Rozas however is different, he can wield two Keyblades because of his connection to Sora's Heart and Ventus' Heart, Sora can only access Ven's heart in his Drive forms. Ventus's heart did protect Sora during DDD when he was being consumed by Darkness, but it isn't because of Ven that Sora can wield a Keyblade. Sora's Heart is so BS OP that he can wield a Keyblade, whereas Riku was bequeathed by Terra, Kairi by Aqua, and Ven was going to bequeath Sora but didn't.

I have one problem with Kingdom Hearts story super Kingdom Hearts 3 I hope they lularoe this plot in the f*cking trash

I never found KHs storyline confusing. What was REALLY CONFUSING was the idea of console fucking hopping...

So I've finally given up trying to pinpoint that accent: where in the UK are you from? My gut says somewhere in Merseyside but I'm just not sure :P

Just to clarify, Nomura worked on ff VII,VIII and X only as a character design, he didn't work on the story, that's why the characters backgrounds/motivations are so different and why no other character from before ff VII appears in kh...Nomura's a hack

Actually, he did work on VII's story. He's credited in the game as the base story writer alongside Sakaguchi.

Think of Kingdom Hearts as Metal Gear Solid. Both have storyline's spanning from different games and systems along with the games not giving two shits about the new players coming to the franchise. Also, MGS somewhat ended with Phantom Pain; which was an amazing send off for the franchise. So, let's not let MGS: Survive get in the way of that.

why didn't you do the time frame I mean since there are no confirm dates for the series why didn't you use the star wars approach by setting BS and AS system (Before sora and After sora) or BKH and AKH (Before Kingdom Hearts and After Kingdom Hearts)?

and dis is why I never got into the series (plus I hate Disney with a passion).

why are you doing Kingdom Hearts instead of Resident Evil? oh wait you probably need to play more in order to do an episode.

Yes.

Having played the HD collections and KH3, all the games post KH2 are very creatively bankrupt string alongs for the fantastic hot garbage of a saga ending that is KH3. This is why my preferred revisiting/replaying of the series is just to do KH1, Re-chain of memories and LH2

Actually I rather like Nomura and if you actually were able to keep up with the series as the games came out they weren't as hard to follow as you make it out to seem, so no thanks I rather keep Nomura's story.

I'm not joking when I say that the series' story actually makes sense when you watch it or play in order. It's weird but it works.

Man BlazBlue and Chrono Trigger much worse than this. I don't know why people say this is the worst you have not seen worst. Until you try BlazBlue story or Crohn's triggers timelines.

Lonely Wolf Same here. Frankly it was just the multiple console dilemma and DDD shoving all the plot into the end portion alongside time travel that made everyone believe that the series was so confusing you'd require a degree in quantum physics to understand it. That and people explaining it in like a 30 minute video. Why else do people say that it's easy to understand just by playing the games and paying attention? I was able to understand it just fine by doing just that. And I was 12 at the time the first HD collection came out. How bad is BlazBlue compared to this anyway?

Your sentence is harder to understand than Kingdom Hearts' plot.

Kingdom Hearts isn't too complicated.

4thSnake you did your best at summarizing the weeb fanfic that is the KH franchise. it's just bad writing and the fanbase should be criticized for praising it all these years.
