Kingdom, Dungeon and Hero | Amanon | Ep. 03 | Restart, Invading Skadi!
Ойындар
Kingdom, Dungeon and Hero is a new fantasy wargame from Alvaro Souza's Kraken Studios (Warplan, Warplan Pacific), and is set to release in July 2024.
This has instantly become one of my most anticipated games of 2024, with its blend of operational level wargame strategy and blobber-style CRPG autobattler combat as you explore dungeons. The Warplan games are excellent, deep wargames that are relatively simple to learn and play, with a mid level complexity of mechanics and endless replayability, and if this is anything as near good as those were, it's gonna be a big success I think.
The game has a manual already, and is apparently almost complete. That gives me great hope, since there's 6 months to polish before release!
The demo with a single short scenario has just released on Steam for you to check out now.

Me too! Been playing a lot recently and really enjoying it. Can't wait for you guys to get hold of it on July 1st.
I'm enjoying your rapid replay of the early game as it's my first time joining this series. When you talk about the time pressure of taking certain settlements it made we wonder if you've every played the 2-player board game War of the Ring. I think that would be right up your street

Thanks! No I don't think I ever did play War of the Ring actually, I'll have to check it out, thanks for the recommendation!

@@battlemode I think it's probably the best two-player board game ever made. You may be able to play it with your wife depending on her gaming preferences

@@RemnantofValour Your last sentence is redundant. I can play any game with my wife depending on her gaming preferences. As can she with mine. That's a given.
This game looks like the fantasy version of shadow empire and I LOVE that. So much potential. It already looks great - I wonder if the dev has any plans for continued development post release.

It's got some elements in common with Shadow Empire, but it's much less complex (and that's no bad thing)

@@battlemode I am a sucker for complexity, so hopefully there is enough in this game to keep me entertained for a while.

@@rbfishcs123 I'm reluctant to draw comparisons to Shadow Empire, Nook made that mistake and I think it draws in very unrealistic expectations from people. I've played Shadow Empire more than most, I think, and I know the game incredibly well. I don't think we should be making that comparison really. Kingdom, Dungeon & Hero is a very good game but it's very different to Shadow Empire, mostly in terms of playspeed and complexity. What it does share in common is that every strategic decision you take is meaningful, and those meaningful decisions come quicker than in Shadow Empire because it's faster to play, and that makes it very compelling if you've got less time on your hands.

Moderate complexity with a mountain of depth. There is no easy decision. It is a sacrifice of one thing or another. Complexity for a game is good as long as it is just enough and not just for the sake of complexity. For example having a 1,000 option tech tree.
Just... one ... more... turn Question for you for my purchase value proposition, why would I play this over other games with similar aspects eg Age of Wonders?

I don't see much similarity between this and Age of Wonders really. This is a grand strategy game with a focus on strategy, where AoW is a 4X (a light 4X) with a focus on tactical combat with lighter strategic elements. Also this game has fixed maps which means you get to replay the scenarios and see different results, something you can't actually do in AoW's later games since they're mostly random maps (and the campaign maps are small scale and don't really have the same appeal).

Tactical fights aside, you've got Heroes going into dungeons levelling up and acquiring kit, Resource Management ( not as many obviously) army building and maintenance but no supply issues, Diplomacy and Warfare in a fantasy setting, I'd say there is a fair bit of overlap, but that the replayability comes from the asymmetry of the various races rather than the divergence caused by more complex systems on the same map. In any case, you are saying that the well-crafted map and the resource complexity that pushes it towards " grand strategy" is what makes it enjoyable for you, that's what I wanted to hear. I look forward to the next couple!

@@droog8400 No 2 kingdoms are equal. You can't balance this game. So the challenge depends on how you want to play it. Builder? Killer? Trader? Quester? Taking a small kingdom and doing wonders with it is an accomplishment.
