Here's where I bought the
slate chippings: goo.gl/qtZ1SW although these can also be bought in bulk at most garden centres.
For this tutorial I mostly used a Rosemary and Co. Series 33 Size 2 brush, except for the initial base colours where I was using a Windsor & Newton Series 7 Size 2.
I also used Testors Dullcote matte varnish to protect the figures.

    I see a lot of people saying how they hate the sculpture of the White Lion and that people replace theirs with other more realistic models, and while at first I thought it looks fairly derpy, I noticed all of the models have sort of a similar style and I began to like it (maybe for the wrong reasons though?). It reminds me of some of those dark children's books that kids would get back in the 80's that I can't remember most of the names of - Where the Wild Things Roam is one of them, but there were others. Books that were potentially haunting in the eyes of a child, where everything has slightly human characteristics, but mostly characteristics of things that would terrify. Apologies for the ramblings of a crazy person, I just wanted to share my thoughts :)

    Hey, thank you for the cracking tutorials. A lot of KZreadrs tell you what they did without the how or the why. While your skills are clearly awesome, it's so good to see your techniques explained in such a way that is (theoretically) doable. These are easily my favourite painting tutorials online. And you write the music, boom! Keep up the good work, Sorastro!

    Really like the work and blending. Good work on the glow around the eyes. The only thing that looked out of place is the face outline. It looks like the ink was a little too dry or thick when doing the face outline creating an almost drawn line around thd face. Perhaps some medium mixed in with the ink woud have brought a more subtle shadowing/softer blend line which would go with the rest of the painting. Loved the wet blending workad the idea of a first rough out before putting in more shades.

  • @Sorastro

    @Sorastro

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Lau! The answer is "both"; yes - the zenithal highlights do a nice job of mapping out the highlights for us, but they also allow us to more easily achieve a wide range of levels in our base colours. If it was just primed in black for example I'd have to work harder to achieve the lighter tones on the top of the figure. :)

Do you always apply a varnish over all the miniatures after the painting is done? Doesn't that mess with the colours, metal effects, etc? I have applied varnish over some of my minis but I am not a professional painter haha and I can tell that it changed the final result slightly, specially over metals. Screaming Antelope next!

  • @Sorastro

    @Sorastro

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! Regarding the wet palette I'm not sure I have much to say as it's pretty easy to use; I just add a generous amount of water to the spongy part and tip some of the excess out, then apply the membrane on top. After a couple of moments the membrane will wrinkle slightly as it absorbs the water so I'll then push the bubbles and wrinkles out, and I'm good to go! :)

  • @Sorastro

    Hi Benny! Inks can be used in lots of ways and I've only really dabbled with them so far myself; yes they do have an intense level of depth and saturation, but also have a thin consistency which makes them somewhat unique. These inks also have quite a glossy finish which helps increase the sense of depth and makes them especially effective when adding that final bit of depth in the shadows :)

  • @Sorastro

    Hi! Also use a few drops of Vallejo's airbrush thinner. I pump my PSI up pretty high for priming to help prevent blockages (up to around 35 PSI). I believe Badger make a really nice primer that might be worth investigating too.. :)

    So how does Sorastro get the colours as seamlessly blended as he does in the first stage of blocking in the colours? When I try to blend colours to a gradient I can't seem to get it to smoothly transition. A couple common things that seem to happen: One colour seems to dominate or muddy the other, the paint is too thin(?) so it doesn't provide enough coverage and I don't think I'm supposed to blend the same spot 10 times, or the paint is thick enough that it gets ridges. Any thoughts? Similar experiences? I've started learning how to paint solely to work towards KDM. This work really is quite fantastic and a great exemplar.

  • @Sorastro

    @Sorastro

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Garnet! A couple of thoughts from me: 1) Regarding consistency, for wet blending I usually go quite thick, so thin the paint just enough to avoid leaving ridges but no thinner. 2) Start by mixing just a small amounts of the paint to see if one ends up dominating as you put it, then find the sweet spot in terms of how much of one to mix into the other. 3) I obviously edit the videos to get them to flow well; in reality there's a bit more "back and forth" than you can see in the final edit until I have the gradient how I like it. I hope this helps a little! :)
