Kingdom Come Deliverance: A Diamond in the Rough

    I still stand by the opinion that this game has hands down the most realistic and dense forests I've ever seen in a videogame, exploring forests in KCD and getting lost within it while listening to the chirping of birds and crackling of twigs is the closest a game has ever gotten to replicating the exact feeling you'd get if you were walking around a forest in real life.

    Thank you for such a thorough review :) Regarding the generic forests, I have to disagree. They are as close to the real woods at the actual location as possible and we wanted to avoid the Betyhesda potatro landscape design, where every 100m there is a secret UFO base or at least a bandit camp, at all costs. That was a choice not a bug. And still, there are lot of things you can find there if you give it a try :)

    I am from Romania, and have to say, a lot of the forests ingame remind me of forests from my country. I don't want to say these country's are the same, just that I had the same feeling as I had when I was little and played with friends in the forests near my grandpa town. In real life, and especially in these parts of the world, the forests are just like that. You get lost 100m in and not everywhere is a point of interest. Now if we get back in 1400.....things really ramp up. Great game, great simulation and historical accuracy, great developers !!!

Hated it at first, but then I realized it's there so that I can better immerse myself into the world and actually think about my actions. Brilliant. However, as someone who comes from the general vicinity of the area where the events of the game take place, I can assure you, I have never seen an ingame forest look more real. While I really enjoy the saving system for the most part, I had once explored the eastern and northern border before I accidentally ran into Prisbyalslavitz, nearly died and just about escaped while almost bleeding to death. But no matter how far I rode from the Cumans and despite my bleeding having stopped I couldn't save or start the next quest so I had to restart the game. And because the save system is based on a finite item I didn't randomly save because of the drunk filter and the limited amount. So I lost out on an hour of exploration when it wasn't my fault at all

    This is where I completely disagree with Luke on the combat. Firstly, you can run away from fights, and that isn't autolock that's pulling you back into combat, that's the enemy grabbing you and spinning you around to force you to stay in combat, you can do the same to the enemy by pressing the tackle button. Secondly, the combat is 'janky', but it's the good kind of jank. You aren't a superhuman, you're a dude with zero combat experience trying to swing a heavy longsword, you're going to struggle swinging that sword. At first, combat was something I actively avoided, but once I got some good gear by looting a few sleeping guards and learnt master strike from Bernard, combat really opened up for me. I went from running away from bandits to actively seeking bandit camps and even installing a mod that increases the chance of bandit encounters just to get into more combat.

  • @spinyslasher6586

    @spinyslasher6586

    Жыл бұрын

    @@grrizzzy7 Of course fighting multiple enemies is bothersome and unfun, the game is trying to be a bit more realistic on that end. Regarding the multiple enemy encounters, it's pretty obvious that you aren't expected to fight all of them at once (although if you have better gear than your opponents you can). In the open world, most of the multiple enemy encounters are gonna come from roadside bandits, and if you have your horse, fighting them is entirely optional, as you can just run away. And a few hours into the game you'll have way better gear than these guys so you can just tank their hunting swords with full plate armour and oneshot them with your longsword or mace. In all of the quests I've played, the game takes an immersive sim approach of giving the players the freedom to choose how they fight the enemy. This means you are never really forced into multiple enemy encounters, as there will always be a stealthy or dialogue approach in these situations. Also horseback archery exists, and it's stupid op just like in real life. And in the case of group fights (like the one in the final mission of the Band of Bastards), you are given multiple allies to draw aggro so it's balanced out.

    Hi. I actually beta tested this game through kickstarter pledge (paid to test) and the combat is working as intended and it is good. I personally find problems not where you find them but on the exponential growth of your skill as Henry. First of, the regular enemies of the game are all more experienced warriors than you. This is certainly true early on but they all have been wielding sharpened pieces of metal for years. You get deluxe training for the period which shortens the gap but still you should be outmatched when facing Cumans or edge knights or professional bandits. The combat has 3 stages over the game. 1st stage is purely stat based. That is when Henry has no clue on how to wield weapons and everyone else's stats are better than his so you literally cannot win a fight. You run out of stanina quickly because your parrying window is short and the way skills work in game mean that the opponent with more skill will drain more stamina per attack. 2nd stage is mid game and early late game and it is skill based. This is where combat is the most interesting. You are fully trained now, know a few combos, you train to pull them off reliably and when facing opponents around the same skill level as you you have to time your parries and counters and it is all you. This is the most souls like bit of the game and the one where I had the best experiences. For instance I was raiding an elite bandit camp and their leader was so good a swordsman that he killed me every tim he fought me. In order to clear that camp I had to invade the camp at night, drive a dagger through his visor while he slept, sneakily murder a couple more sentinels, and then I could take care of the rest of the camp. Last stage, the end game is stat based again... Only this way, weighed in your favour. Massively. And combat loses all fun as you can basically one shot all enemies because the added bonuses of max strength bonus, weapon stat bonus and perks like headcracker mean that you are unstoppable. I modded this ages ago and basically made stats really expensive experience wise past level 10. I wanted to decouple strength bonuses and remove perks to make combat even more interesting but got bored because each main stat influences a lot of things and it is a pain to go through all of them. The end result would be that opponents with much higher skill than you (they would've been training since the age of 3 or 4) would be impossible to defeat unless you got really good at your combat controls. There would be enemies you would roll over and most would offer reasonable fights. This would make combat really focus on player skill late game and not be stat based like it is now in the late game. But yeah, combat is really fun and engaging and you have to learn it at the same time as Henry and that is a beautiful thing. Forgot to add, was a professional fencer for many years and practice HEMA when my knees allow it. Save for the lack of leg attacks (super important), combat in this game is spot on. Super realistic. It is a dance but not the one you are thinking of. There are lots of breaks in between attacks as you need to close guard and recover some stamina. You need to be careful as if you get too flowfull, you will leave a lot of openings and you will be killed. I think you fundamentally mistook what the combat system is supposed to be (and looking at your footage, you have a lot to learn. Your stamina management is not good imho). Edit: the 180 degree turn you talk about is not the Autolock!!! Enemies catch up with you and turn you around.

    This is a great explanation for the compat system. Adding some of my experiences, stage 1 could be summarized as 'Remember to wake up early and get some training', maybe fight a couple low level bandits one on one, figure out which weapon best fits your playstyle. Stage 2 is indeed the most fun, where fights are challenging and you're never sure of the outcome. The last time I played KCD, this is where I went into the BIG bandit camp and messesd everyone up. Fighting 1v4, watching out for archers, picking the spots to attack. Just remember to get doped up on potions. Stage 3 is Henry going back from a warrior into a blacksmith. Get a hammer, bonk everyone on the head, win.

    Even a knight trained from a young age would struggle against multiple enemies. And the discussion about the bow being broken is frustrating. The bow (nor the combat) is not broken. If you have ever tried to pull a bow with a 50 - 75 pound draw weight (much less an English longbow) for the first time, it will damn near pull your arm out of its socket. You couldn’t hit a rabbit from two yards, as Henry can’t. When fully levelled towards late game, combat is a dream. The only jankiness or sluggishness is that which simulates Henry’s completely understandable jankiness or sluggishness at the start of the game when he has zero skill and zero training.

    What I need to say is that Kingdom Come gave me a feeling I haven't had since Oblivion (and that is HUGE praise): There were moments where I just got off the horse and... walked. The cities and valleys are incredibly well-designed and gorgeous. The characters are unique and engaging. The storyline is amazing. This game redefines 'immersive'. I recommend it to anyone! Some of the janky 'hardcore' design choices (like limited saves) can be taken out with mods, toning down some of the more out there elements of the game. My advice is to not focus/mod away everything you dislike about the game, and enjoy the parts you do. Because in what KCD does well, it does best-of-class. Bethesda has not released an RPG like this in a decade.

    The only thing I modded away were the limited saves and bush collision, and I did the former because I didn't wanna lose 20-30 minutes of progress due to crashes, and the latter because it was annoying as hell. But post midgame you can easily fight bandits and get tons of saviour schnapps from them, and taverns are dirt cheap. I also modded the weapon dirtiness system, but I modded it to make it much more gradual and realistic.

    I just finished your video about Kingdom Come and since I was following the development I've got a few things to add. - First and foremost, it was absolutely devs' desire to make the combat hard and clunky for the starting portion of the game. Dan Vávra (Hanush of Leipa has his face) wanted to make a medieval simulator that would still be fun to play. They spent a lot of time balancing simulation aspects of the game. - Dan Vávra, creator of this game, wrote an editorial after Skyrim came out titled 100+ reasons why Dan Vávra hates Skyrim. It's kinda legendary in nerd culture in Czechia and Slovakia because it was half serious and one of his biggest pet peeves was that there are no toilets. I low key believe that when haters told him "go do your own Skyrim if you don't like it" he decided to do just that. (Vávra wrote scripts for first two Mafia games and had big impact on development of the first one which is cult classic around here, so he's well known here.) - If memory serves me right, Crytek engine was used because it could handle the nature better than Unreal or any other competitor and at the time it was also cheap. I assume they have a contract signed and that's why they plan to stick with it even though Epic is nowadays like that Oprah meme with UE4/5. You get UE, you get UE, everybody gets cheap UE! - If memory serves me right once again, they originally planned it with more episodic approach but due to budget reasons decided to make the game bigger with less sequels/episodes. I expect a trilogy or duology at this point. Warhorse is now working on something but don't know what it is either. - I have no comment to offer for dreadful skill and stuff towards the end. I don't understand it either. - Saviour Schnaps is Sejvovica in Czech and it's been made reality, as official "merch"(?) of Warhorse. It's actually Slivovica, alcohol made out of plums that is characteristic for this region. - There will be fan made semi-professional Czech dub out this year on PC. Some of the devs that borrowed their looks to in-game characters will be voicing them. Console version could happen too, it's fully supported by the studio but it's up to Sony and MS once it's finished. I really liked the video, been watching your content for a while now and I appreciate the more in-depth way you do things. Edit: originally I included links to the 100+ reasons article and Sejvovica but YT hates links and fake posted the comment - everything seemed okay but upon refresh the comment wouldn't show. Meanwhile there's a thousand Whatsapp scammers out there pretending to be YT creators and Google does nothing... Please start posting on other platforms like Odysee or Rumble.

    One thing to clarify, because it isn't explained the way it should be. Śliwowica, or however it might be named in other countries is of course characteristic for Czechs only, in parts of Poland (and not that ones close to the border with Czechs) it is quite popular and I don't know if it's also popular in other countries in this part of Europe, but from original comment someone could thought it's something that Czechs are doing.

They can't hit you with melee weapons and you can shoot them at point blank range. The bandits that spawn in skallitz often have end game tier gear to loot right from the get go and the random encounter in skallitz resets of you ride out of skalltiz and down the road for two minutes and back. Yeah I’m having a hard time with this one so far because it really seems like he just sort of has bad stats and is bad at combat and is confusing that with the combat being bad. It isn’t bad. It makes the combat much better early game.

  • @HerbertFilby

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bartholomewesperanza3442 That's basically the secret. Get to Bernard to unlock Perfect Block, and then combat is just standing around waiting for the start of an NPC swing animation. You tap the Block button, and it triggers an animation where you bonk the NPC on the head or push them away. If they get a bonk and are still within range, hit the NPC in the face with a stab to trigger bleeding. Then just stand around and wait for another opportunity to Perfect Block again so you have an opening to stab or bonk him again. That's all there is to it. Every time I try doing sword combos, the NPC usually just Perfect Blocks me, so I just play defensively now and it's less frustrating.

    KCD is amazing, it’s one of the greatest games I’ve played as is my second favourite game ever. The world is amazing, the combat is awesome and rewarding, the story and quest are fun. Many people first trying to play this game don’t give it the time it needs to grow on you. It has a slow start and you have to give it time. Unlike other games you’re not some sword wielding badass chick magnet that can slaughter everything. You’re a peasant son of a black smith who doesn’t know how to hold a sword or even read and you have to actually train in everything to actually get good at. Wanna read? Have to go to a scribe and learn and then continue reading books thereafter to be able to fully complete sentences and for the words to make complete sense. Wanna learn how to fight better offensive and defensive? Have to go and train with Bernard for hours to get really good and able to take on 5 people in plate armour alone. This game is one of the best I’ve played and it also got me interested in that particular time in history that the game is based on and in, every character you meet is a historical person and can learn about more of in the codex. I highly urge people who haven’t played this game to give a shot and to please be patient and give it time and to also go in there knowing you’re are shit and useless and will have to spend hours training in everything to become for the character and yourself to actually be good at anything

    About the combat responsiveness, I am not sure if you just didn't notice, but Henry does respond slow and late early in the game (because the character is meant to suck), and then these attacks and movement becomes faster, more fluid, and more responsive as Henry levels up his combat skills, strength, and agility. About fighting multiple enemies, yes it's clunky. But at the same time, it's part of the realism. Fighting more than one enemy really puts you in a HUGE disadvantage, unless you are a superhero from a movie. I think we all have been spoiled with all other RPG games where our characters can easily take on a whole batallion. KCD makes you grounded, and reminds you that you are not a superhero this time. A knight in shining armor may look cool, but a rag-wearing bandit can bash your head in with a two-handed rusty halberd easily. About the 180 turn - it's not the game forcing you to face the enemy, it's actually the enemies catching up on you and turning you around. I played a light armor Henry playthrough, and this rarely happened to me because with light armor, I could run faster. On using bow - Henry shakes because he's inexperienced and weak. If you put time to level up his bow skills, and increase your strength, bow use is going to to be more stable, and Henry can pull and hold the bow longer. Higher bow skills also allows you to use better bows, which launches more straight, faster, farther arrows.

    personally luke, the “boring” stuff in this game is like the bread and butter to me. idc if theyre not typical gameplay experiences with hackin and slashin shit all the time, sometimes theres also time to pull weeds and enjoy the peace of it :) i like it bc as you established, it feels like a real world. people there would be doing the shit theyre doing regardless of whether youre there or not. falling into that world and being a part of it for a little bit, even when you see a lot of the stuff youre supposed to do is shit you wouldnt even want to do in real life, i think its very cathartic. i like the idea of existing in a world pre modern technology as well, the world wasnt good but everything needing to be done manually and nature still being mostly intact makes me happy :) edit: you made some very good points about the fining system and it made me realize it doesnt even really align with the games MO which is adherence to realism as much as possible. thats such an easy thing to change too, albeit theyd prob need a few more voicelines too. hopefully we see it in a sequel?

    I've started playing this game for the first time recently and have already put around 30 hours into it. It's incredibly immersive, I love how everything feels grounded and real to the point where it feels like a simulator game. It's very good. I do have some gripes with the game though that I'm hoping are improved upon with the next game. For example people keep saying that fighting multiple enemies in this game feels like a chore but at the same time, to me, it feels really exciting and rewarding when you fend off multiple enemies. I think the biggest issue with the game is the save system. "Oh you travelled across the entire map, looted a bunch of things and survived 2 encounters? Here's a third one with 6 super heavily armed enemies and a dog". At least if I had a save before that I could reload and try again or avoid going that same direction all together for a bit. I know it's trying to be realistic and "more hardcore" but a saving system I think is the one thing that a developer should skimp out. Maybe don't change the manual save system with Savior Schnaps but introduce an auto-save system that doesn't activate only after certain important parts of some quests.

Band of Bastards is fun at the start and you get the best armor in the game at the end, Hans Capon's DLC is just a great story to a great friendship, and From The Ashes has some really nice things in it, depending on what you buy (and otherwise its free income after a point)

    I never thought this game was that clunky. You think that at the start and or when you are shit at the combat, but when henry gets better... you get better. In what world would a blacksmith that can't even break a stick with a sword be any good at fights?. Its about learning all the moves. By the end game Henry is a beast. You can take on 3 people (still hard but doable) and it feels very rewarding but you have to get good at it. Fighting 2 people at once should be very hard. The Devs went for realism, that means you can't just go front flipping in and rolling about. If you always avoid the combat then henry won't get better which means you won't get better.

    Brilliant critique, and I agree with virtually everything you've said here, but I do feel the need to opine on the combat system. There are two key points that are often overlooked about Kingdom Come's combat. The first is that Henry is a complete tyro and has never swung a sword in his life, much less killed someone (you can see this quite clearly and comically when Sir Radzig asks if he'd like to try hitting the wooden stake in the ground at the very start). This is why the first proper mission is literally called 'Run'. The second is the player is equally a complete tyro to the combat system. As you mentioned, it is a completely unique system that has never been seen before in any game and takes most, if not all, its inspiration from historical European martial arts (HEMA). It takes a significant amount of time to learn the combat system, the parries, the blocks, the perfect blocks, to say nothing of the combos. What you get with both of these is a symbiotic relationship between the player and Henry. As you master the combat system, you and Henry are literally and figuratively levelling up together. You both start off as utter novices. As Henry's strength, swordsmanship, and defence levels rise, you the player's familiarity and competence levels rise. By about 30 hours in, you are at sync with the combat system, but Henry still has a little bit more he can learn. As you push him to the highest levels of strength, swordsmanship, and defence, he becomes what you have been for 10 or more hours: comfortable. He swings faster, his timing windows increase, his perfect parry becomes a genuine weapon that can turn battles, and his equipment gives him that final edge. But, and this is something that a lot of people miss, as much of a God as you become, you get surrounded and you can still have a very bad day -- even against peasants with pitchforks while you don full plate armour. The combat always keeps you on your toes, even at max everything, so much so that if you start a new game after having mastered your own personal skill regarding the combat system, something will still feel off and you'll get your ass kicked just as much as you did when you started originally. Because you may be comfortable with the combat system, but Henry is back to being an ordinary peasant again. And that's why I love Kingdom Come Deliverance's combat. It's always fresh, it always keeps you on your toes, and it never gets boring. Because every fight is a tactical one. As it should be. Even historical fully trained knights knew better than to scoff at unarmored peasants with pitchforks. I learned to never assume anything in KCD. I once took on five bandits in full plate armor, in a battle that lasted thirty minutes and had me looking like a dented tin can, and I used tactics to win. I then stumbled into the woods against four peasants with pitchforks, wearing the same weapons and armor, and they got behind me and annihilated me. That's why I love this game to death -- and why I often feel the need to defend its combat system.

    The combat was one of my favorite aspects of this game. I didn't like using it against multiple enemies (that needs work), but 1 on 1, probably my favorite combat system of any game. When you up your skill, Henry is more responsive with his swings. I like the bow and arrow too, it was really rewarding once I got good at it. It's not easy like every other game. That being said, they should probably make an easy mode for players that don't want the challenge ... *cough* . I really don't want them to completely change it up because some people weren't happy about it.

    In regards to the combat system I have to say when you figure it out it is incredibly smooth. Fighting groups of enemies can be easy when you get it down, however there is one massive thing that results in the experience that most people I have. The single largest issue in the system is the game does a poor job at communicating to you how to fight and utilize the system. Now this can be broken up into 2 parts. 1. Not all systems are explicitly told to the player. 2. There are some systems in the game that discourage players from improving. Now starting of with systems not being explained. You complained about the combat feeling slow and sluggish from the moment you press the attack button and the moment henry moves. It does not tell you this in the game, but this is directly tied to your agility stat. Now warfare, not your sword skill, or strength...agility. Now if you learn the combat system and max out all of your stats there is really nothing that can stop you. I mean achieved godhood at level 12 is a common issue and one that I and many people complain about. I mean I did a run where I power leveled up before the 1st big battle and I literally took out the entire camp at pribitslavitz in the night raid by wearing plate armor and making a bunch of noise and fighting literally all the enemies at once. And sadly it was easy at that point. My Henry basically was powerful enough to kill everyone with his mace in 1 hit and no one could touch me even out numbered. But literally restarting the game and starting back at level 1 and doing the combat tutorials to at least get master strikes back and you find that at level 5 the combat feels slow and clunky due to this delay. So a decent amount of the difficulty is with the game physically holding you back with stats that decrease how fast you can respond to attacks and it doesn't tell you this in a very noticeable manor. A second issue is the lock on system and not the system itself, but with how its explained and various aspects of it. For example all you need to do to unlock is hold shift and you will lock on to whoever the cursor is on when you unlock. If you turn in the opposite direction it will not lock of you hold shift and that also happens to be the run button. So at least on the PC with a keyboard+mouse the locking issue is not a problem. I cannot say the same about a controller though. Now onto systems that discourage players. One of the large flaws of the combat system is master strikes. The ability to just get a free hit by timing your block exactly correctly. It from a player's standpoint becomes a just a free hit button and for many people who haven't figured out the combat system they can get stats high enough to where they can do really well by just sitting there and waiting to hit block. This is especially true when the enemies can easily use the same move on you when you strike them. This essentially means that rather than learn the very well through out combo system, or even experimenting with blocking at different angles or overall any sort of aggressive game play is both punished by the enemy getting a free hit and you being passive is rewarded through the player getting a free hit. When you put these together you essentially keep players playing a system they don't understand because the way to understanding it is locked off through gamplay mechanics that discourage exploration of these systems. to fight groups you need to rapidly switch between enemies and play agressively. This is a tactic that is not explained well at all and is actively discouraged by mechanics. I think the core combat is good and there are mods that remove some of the issues like master strikes and it becomes incredibly fun and probibly one of the best out there. However, that still doesn't solve the method of teaching someone how to fight in this game. That is something that needs to come out as a tutorial and while many people like this game's tutorial, it really doesn't work well. For what ever reason they thought it was a good idea to not teach people how to fight in groups or even allow practicing fighting groups. Because it is very fun and very fluid once you get your stats up and learn how to do it. But that is a massive issue because low stats leading to worse feeling movement results in people not fighting which results in people not learning how and it just tumbles out of control.

    Great comment! I’ve been playing this gem recently and I struggle with being aggressive in combat. I have a very high level Heny with a 20 sword stat. It seems no matter what I do, mix it up, feint, etc. My enemies ALWAYS master strike me or perfect parry. This is detrimental when fighting groups and forces me to be defense ONLY. Any tips to avoid getting master striked when fighting multiple enemies? I see there are mods that greatly reduce the amount of master strikes that enemies perform, but I’d rather get the most out of the vanilla system as intended.

  • @zackeryhardy9504

    @zackeryhardy9504

    @@supermanlift So if you remember back to the combat tutorial you will have heard that blocking opposite to where your opponent is holding their sword makes it harder for them to block. I bet you like most and even me for a while thought that it was complete BS. Well it isn't. How far away your sword is from the enemy sword positionaly directly affects the size of the window your opponenet has to perfect block and master strike. Because the game is generous with both, it isn't abundantly clearn, but it is in the code. If you are on PC there is a mod that outright prevents perfect block unless you are mirroring your opponent and same for them. This really helps with that, but sometimes you just have to tank hits. A bit one is switching targets as often as possible. The longer you keep your sword in a position the more accurate your opponent is with blocking. And while it doesn't always work. Throw in feints aswell. But don't be consistant. Every time you do a feint the enemy expects a feint which drobs the longer you go without doing it. Much of combat is about feeling it out and unfortunatly you just have to do it a lot to really get a feel for it. I have always hated the term because it feels toxic, but it is in part about getting good. And you do that through reppetition. Fighting bernard also helps a lot. If you can take out bernard quickly in the practice with real weapons fight, then you can quickly dispatch the lower armored guys. Also my last tip is use a mace. It is by far the best weapon in the game as it basicly work on any opponent armor level and perks like headcracker can easily allow you to just disable enemies for a short time. I personally like using the longsword, but that is not ideal for heavily armored dudes. I mean with a mace you can 2 hit runt in that battle that used to basicly act as a soft lock for people in the game.

    I think that the combat is annoying, but not because it's glitchy most of the time. Sure, it's annoyin* that you get pulled into the fight forcefully when you run away, but it's not because of a buggy system. It's because the enemies are running up to you and grabbing you. I honestly like that the combat is annoying. It's just plain realistic. Edit: Just now got to the part where you said if players think it's a bug, it is. Hopefully this doesn't sound too aggressive, but I'm pretty sure it's just a personal you sort of thing on thinking the bugs in the combat systems are bugs. I never thought they were bugs, I thought it was just hard combat. Which it is. But I got better! I can defeat most of my enemies now without much problem. Edit, phase 2: Okay, I know I'm seeming like super aggressive here, but I got to the archery part and you're actually just... bad? I don't like judging like this usually, but I never had this much issue aiming ;p Edit, phase 3: Ugh, I'm done after this lol I swear. Maybe I'm an outlier here, maybe I'm weird, but I love the combat and I don't actively avoid it. Again, maybe I'm some psychopath lol idk

    I appreciate the learning curve, overall. They did a great job of blurring the lines between Henry getting better and the player getting better. I'm not at endgame yet so my comment doesn't apply to late game domination but I noticed lockpicking going faster and more battles going well and it never felt like an instant jump. Some games, you reach a certain level or unlock a skill and it's an immediate difficulty reduction. This felt like a smooth increase in ability and I never really knew who deserved most of the credit- Henry or me. It's amazing how combat almost slows down as you get used to it. Starts off as a panicked blur and then becomes very calculated and metered. I started seeing the openings and understanding when to strike where. Very cool, very engaging. I agree with others about the beauty of the forests. I appreciate the horse mechanics overall. It's cool that sometimes you just feel like going on foot is the better choice. On horse you don't get the time to look around, especially in forests. Love the sleep mechanics. Crazy feeling paying attention to time of day before setting out on open world travels. Sometimes you find yourself at night, low on energy, and unable to find a legal bed to sleep in. It actually causes anxiety. Made me spend a couple hours going around and buying up permanent lodging after getting to an inn at night just for the inn keeper to already be asleep and me wondering if I can get away sleeping in a strangers bed.

    Just picked up the Royal edition for PS4 on sale. Your discussion of the learning curve is spot on.

    thanks for the review! however i find worthabuy's conclusion more in line with my own experience. especially concerning your combat criticism. Overall i appreciate the fact pretty much every game mechanic is rooted in plausibility regarding real life- therefore i'd go so far as to say it's one of the most close things you might play to a “realistic”medieval setting.
