@The Truth about Africa hurts, well the basics; I.e rifle, round and scope I don’t think is anything pertinent. Grain, ok, I can see them being a bit particular on that but it isn’t like people are asking for their scope dope.

Anti-gun people don't get this level of the sport. There are just so many dimensions of the sport to get into - the physics, the engineering, the ammunition, the team dynamics. To hit something at 2 miles is an amazing achievement. Massive respect to all those guys (where are the gals?) who competed.

Making the decision as a spotter to spot through the rifle scope because of the discovery that Paul Phillips made as a shooter himself before when he saw the bullet impacts better than through the binoculars perhaps made the difference in the end I think. No wonder that Paul Phillips is still the acting king of 2019.

I shoot out to just under 1500 yards; a bit less than a mile, but there is one factor I cannot overcome. When my bullet velocity drops to about 1200 fps the bullets begin to lose stability, like a gyroscope that is spinning too slow, so beyond 1300 yards or so luck becomes a major factor in my accuracy. These guys are shooting different calibers at different velocities, but they too face similar limits; just at a greater distance. At some point bullets are apt to yaw and drift off target no matter how great your skill as a marksman may be.

  • @codychildress7859

Weird things, unpredictable things happen around transonic speeds. What I couldn't understand was the guys using 30 call or even 338 caliber in a 2 mile shoot. There is NO advantage of shooting less than a 375 at that distance. Gravity is constant, the wind is obviously the biggest factor. And I'm AMAZED it took this long for them to start spotting with a rifle. The teams are using the same scopes and if they spot with a rifle, you literally get the same look at the impact as the shooter would if the recoil was not a factor. These guys are all world class shooter, buy some of them made mental and logistical errors before even laying behind the gun.

@@codychildress7859 We were shooting at one mile not long ago and could clearly see the effects of that transition when we recovered some of our bullets and found they impacted the ground sideways, leaving the bullet tips undamaged. Our bullets hit the transition at about 1250 fps and accuracy really begins to deteriorate badly at about 1400 yards. I think a bullet change might get me an extra hundred yards, but it isn't terribly important to do it. We are just having fun plinking!

@@340wbymag that's impressive with a factory gun! But if it's a weatherby then it's quality. I'd DEFINITELY look at the 300gr Berger. You'll probably have to single feed. O have a 6.5 wsm and a 300 Norma. I've taken the Norma to 2000 yds but I'm fully aware it would be pure luck and magic to take it to 2 miles. If I had somewhere to shoot with that sort of distance, I'd build something like a 375 Chey or a 375-416 Barrett. Those accubonds are great hunting bullets, but those Berger bullets are amazing for long range shooting.

*bad ass shooter. That doesn't mean he'd necessarily make a good sniper as there's a lot more pressure involved.

These are all professionals, so here should be no excuses. I think shooters should only get two chances per target.

After telling us the usual 5 calibers they use in this competition, the commentators don't tell us the calibers the shooters are ACTUALLY using! Disappointing!

Most shooters can tell the gun being shot without being told what it is each time. Also, side note, this is a sport that costs several dollars per shot. To get to their level requires a substantial investment in time, math, and equipment.
