King Charles & the Future of Britain | Melanie Phillips

An outspoken British journalist with a reputation for fierce and honest opinions, Melanie Phillips offers cut-through commentary on a number of significant cultural and geopolitical issues. She and John discuss the coronation of Charles III, the cultural problems gripping the UK, and the relationship between Israel and the West.
Melanie considers what the reign of King Charles will mean for Britain socially and politically. Although she acknowledges that Charles has been more politically opinionated than his mother, Melanie points out that there is good reason to be optimistic about his reign on the basis of his character. Melanie gives a particularly scathing critique of law enforcement and state education in the UK.
Melanie's column currently appears in The Times, but over the years she has been published by the Guardian, Observer, Sunday Times and Daily Mail. She also writes for the Jewish Chronicle and Jewish News Syndicate.
Her best-selling book Londonistan, about the British establishment’s capitulation to Islamist aggression, was published in 2006 by Encounter, New York. She followed this in 2010 with The World Turned Upside Down: the Global Battle over God, Truth and Power, and in 2018 with her first novel, The Legacy. This is the third time she and John have sat down to talk.

Truth doesn't have an "anti-truth". There is truth that frankly never changes, only perhaps our perception of it, and lies that can change at the whim of the teller. Like you Stan, I find it refreshing to hear the truth and clearly it clangs like a bell in the wilderness of msm miasma.

I live in France. Last year I was invited to the annual village meal. I'm the only Englishman in the village but many neighbours came to me and commiserated about the Queen's passing. Three of the local women actually cried. They understand that the late Queen stood for something and her passing marked an unwelcome change in this world.

Same here in Canada. We have the same head of state as the UK, so the Queen was here as well - but her importance to many people was greater than being a figurehead or someone to put on stamps and cash. She stood for something bigger than the institution of Monarchy, something bigger than government itself. She came from an era where Class distinctions still existed, and could form a person to put duty first and self second. We have lost that entirely. Now we live in a world where only money seems to matter, and the only interests people are encouraged to pursue are selfish ones.

At about 8:00, Melanie speaks of the way the nation of America is hurt when a President is or does something dreadful, the way the people are hurt in our identity-that is what I’ve been feeling! I feel that there are so many of us who care about our communities and the world community…and I want to cry out to them, “This is not who we are! Not what we wanted to be!” I love her words about the monarchy, the “old Britain”. How often in my long life I wanted to live in Britain and become a citizen because of these old values…the ones I learned from C.S. Lewis and from Tolkien….not as the popular fantasy romances, but because of the great values and ideals embodied in their philosophies. These men and others like them intentionally used their writings to combat the nihilism and hopelessness around the wreckage of the World Wars and bring courage and hope back to our minds. The servant-leadership and hopefulness of the Queen, as you said, and her unswerving loyalty to her people, were similarly significant. Thank you, John and Melanie, for this encouraging conversation. And thank you, Britain and the entire UK, for your own idealism and example. I know I’m not expressing this the best, but thank you nonetheless.

As a 50-year-old born and bred Catholic Englishman, I found the ceremony extremely beautiful and emotional. I say emotional because I felt like I was mourning, not only the death of possibly the best embodiment of what I deem to be the human embodiment of what is to be British in a Monarch, but also religion, truth and morality because all of those things seem to have been completely remove especially from politics and contemporary British culture. This country is not Great Britain anymore its just England, sadly.

I thank the God of Israel for this Lady. He has used her eloquent insight into the spirit of the age, to warn the world of the impending danger to mankind. Thank you sincerely for the love of your nation, and the nations of the world. Speaking truth to lies, and shouldering the insult. The Lord bless you, and continue to give you His wisdom.

having to smile and do her job a few days before she died ? She was meeting a new priminister in front of the cameras the day before she died and she was very ill. She ALWAYS did her duty no matter what. She took her role very seriously, its not quite as simple as americans like to suggest that she lounged around on futons with servants meeting her every need.

I find it troubling that our King is so politically active, and, not least, that he is involved with the WEF. This to me prevents him from being able to be 'above the fray'. It is not so much what he does in public as what he does behind the scenes. It could cost him his kingship. Melanie, I want you to know that each morning I spend about 10 minutes praying for Israel and have done so since 2012. I believed it was God who commanded me to do this after reading a book. You have given me some specific 'fodder' to pray about rather than in general terms. If He has told me to pray in this way, I am certain He has commanded others.

Although I was born in the 1950s it was not until later that I realised why our Queen was held in such esteem. For instance even as a Princess ,in wartime there she was seen working at repairs of army vehicles and setting an example to young women at that time how they too could help the war effort , like the land army or despatch riders. As a Queen she upheld relations with leaders abroad. The Royal Family are the custodians of the character of English people.

I am the child of a British immigrant, who died a proud subject of the Queen, imparting the values, love and lore of her beloved 'tiny island'.(She was mortified by the EU.) As I live an American experience, in the midst of turmoil and exposure of deep corruption, not only within America but worldwide, within all politics and processes, it's little wonder my spirit is shaken. I am blessed to have the British 'pluck' instilled in me, but the 'Yank' in me pulls at me, too. Perception is the name of this world's 'game' and with Truth crashing down on our learned and programmed perceptions, I am grateful to have some of that British 'pluck' to fall back on. Elizabeth II provided the image and a perception that codified and united the will and thoughts of the war-weary British people. Perhaps, when we learn to recognize the structures that mold our perceptions, we'll be more comfortable with seeking out Truth versus accepting the pablum fed to us. Critical thinking was never such an important resource, ergo how very politically incorrect am I. Heaven help us all.
