Very unflattering! Make that, totally unflattering!! I'm an artist (fine art, portraits, etc.- US), and I find this portrait unbecoming in all aspects. A 'traditional' portrayal would be much more in line with a painting of a 'king' or other important personage. I'm surprised Charles would even accept this, or at least, behind closed doors, express his honest displeasure to the artist. All in all, the painting does not have a 'good feel' about it, whatsoever.

@@cocos8903 Its not a self portrait. Some portraits are supposed to be a plain likeness. Others use all sorts of artifice or impressionism to be thought provoking, make wider statements, demonstrate vulnerabilities, illustrate contradictions, give a different insight or confound the eye, which is clearly what is going on here. I'll happily agree its not as visually pleasing as a traditional portrait, but it sacrifices that to say something it regards as more revealing than simple physical appearance. Its an entirely legitimate form of portraiture.

Dreadful. Looks like the artist spilled a whole can of red paint on it just before it went on show and only had time to wipe it off the face.

As for the artistry, it's stunning. A tonal pallette with reds! That's beyond technically difficult. People will want to come see it. It's shaken the art world.
