Despite all the circumstances, Joanna still loved her children at her own way. She was just broken by her husband and then cast aside by her father. At least Charles tried to give her the little attention he could, by visiting her with Isabella and letting his children go visit their grandmother sometimes.

Caty Fierce yes it's so sad what happened to Juana, though I think it's possible she might have inherited the mental illness that her grandmother had, which was probably some form of depression or schizophrenia. Some sources claim that Carlos was just as cruel to her as his father and grandfather, even saying that he denied her any visitors all the years she was confined, but could that be the Black Legend talking?

Magdalenkaization her maternal grandmother Isabel of Portugal, the mother of Isabel I of Castile. Sadly, her condition worsened so much so that the last time Queen Isabel saw her mother, the old woman no longer recognised her daughter and actually, the same thing happened to Juana because in her later years, it got to the point where she no longer recognised the people who regularly visited her, including her grandson Felipe II. Mental illness clearly ran in the family because one of Juana’s granddaughters also suffered from mental health problems, but I can’t remember which one. It may have been her great-granddaughter, but I’m not sure...

In addition, Rudolf II Habsburg, the Holy Roman Emperor (great-grandson of Joanna the Mad) was known to have had a succession of affairs with women, some of whom claimed to have been impregnated by him. He had several illegitimate children with his mistress Catherina Strada. Their eldest son, Don Julius Caesar d'Austria, was likely born between 1584 and 1586 and received an education and opportunities for political and social prominence from his father. In 1607, Rudolf sent Julius to live at Český Krumlov in Bohemia (in the modern-day Czech Republic) castle, which Rudolf purchased from the last of the House of Rosenberg (Peter Vok/Wok von Rosenberg) after he fell into financial ruin. Julius lived at Český Krumlov when in 1608 he reportedly abused and murdered the daughter of a local barber, who had been living in the castle, and then disfigured her body. Rudolf condemned his son's act and suggested that he should be imprisoned for the rest of his life. However, Julius died in 1609 after showing signs of schizophrenia, refusing to bathe, and living in squalor; his death was apparently caused by an ulcer that ruptured

Yikes!! Yes Rudolf II also had mental health problems - he suffered from melancholia, which was common in the Hapsburg line. Carlos, himself, suffered from melancholia for the rest of his life after Isabel died. Unfortunately, as a ruler, Rudolf II was nothing like his grandfather Fernando and his great-uncle Carlos. He was certainly a patron of the arts, but his preoccupation with the arts resulted in multiple disastrous political failures. Good thing the Austrian Hapsburg branch eventually got the great Empress Maria Theresa, the only woman to rule the house as Holy Roman Empress.

The acting talent in this series is UNREAL. Carlos' youth and naivete not just outwardly but in the way he addresses his own mother, Eleanor's understandably complicated relationship with family members, where you can see just how much her upbringing in court influences her personality; and Queen Joanna's stately bearing especially when she looks at her son as she reminds him what is expected of him. Amazing. Not to mention how totally fiiine they all are. Accuracy aside, the visual aesthetic is also undeniable. This series is a great testament to Spanish history, which the world needs more of. The 19th century was not kind to Spain, but I hope the tide turns.

Yeah, it is a very interesting question. I always see a contradiction here: if Joanna was really so mentally ill that she had to be deprived of her rights to rule and had to be locked up, why was she allowed to raise a child (a royal princess!) on her own? Why did they allow this child to have to endure being raised in captivity, deprived of her freedom, a royal upbringing, and being locked up with a person who is severely ill mentally? That's such a cruel thing to do to a child. Even if not sending her to Margaret, Catherine could have stayed with her brother Ferdinand in their grandpa's care and grown up together, that would have been such a logical solution. But if Joanna was not so ill and she could safely keep the child with her, why was it necessary in the first place to lock her up?

@Luna Garcia Yeah, but who said tower? When there is talk about Joanna's captivity, it's always said that she was locked up in the Palace of Tordesillas. Neither tower nor nunnery. I don't understand. What does having children have to do with Joanna's captivity? It was not a choice of either remarrying or retiring, with her choosing retiring. She had 6 children, as you said, 2 boys, all living and healthy, she didn't need more children from a new marriage. Joanna's place was neither in a nunnery/retirement/captivity nor in a new marriage giving birth. Her place was on the throne ruling like her mother, but for certain reasons, that didn't happen. And, if one reads about the circumstances of Joanna's capture and transfer to the Palace of Tordesillas, it seems kinda certain that her captivity was not her own idea and her will.... Her sister Maria did not die while giving birth, she died 6 months after her last childbirth (although possibly of the consequences the births had on her health).

@Luna Garcia It would have been very complicated to force Joanna into a new marriage without her own consent. Not with her already having heirs and being a queen regnant, even if only nominal. She could say no at the altar and she could refuse to sign the contract if she didn't want the marriage. It was possible for a widowed queen regnant to rule alone, without a husband, it happened before in Spain. If she had a son and heir, it wasn't necessary to remarry. There was absolutely nothing that indicated that the Church or Cisneros or any Spanish lord would force her into a new marriage. Even if she received proposals from others in Europe, the Spanish didn't favour the idea of a remarriage at all. She had no reason to fear that she would be forced to remarry. Elizabeth's case was completely different because her advisors were right in a way, she should have had children and heirs logically, like any monarch should (and because the succession line was a complete mess after her, with unwanted Scots and Catholics and a lot of problems). Neither Ferdinand nor Cisneros wanted Joanna to remarry, bringing another foreigner into the country. Henry VII's envoys tried to reach Joanna after Philip's death to negotiate about a possible marriage between them, but after Ferdinand returned to Spain, he cut it short and refused them or anyone else to approach with marriage idea for Joanna. So, there was no need for Joanna to fear that she could be forced into a new marriage 😀 No, Joanna did not choose her captivity as a lesser evil to having more children. She didn't choose it at all.

No. Cuando Carlos tenía 17 ella 10.

Catherine or Mary, her sisters, were so far better qualities to rule, no this obsessed and depressive woman....Catherine live a very hard life also, even she suffer hunger in England after Arthur died Henry VII doesn´t her allow back to Spain and her father doesn´t send money, she lost all their child except Princess Mary, she suffer the same humiliation than Joanna by her husband and worse, because Catherine hasn't real power ...and she never become a psychotic or depressive woman. Joanna can recover her power and freedom when the Comuners rebellion but he choose stay imprisoned , and the castilian men and women who trust in their queen, were betrayed by her, and they lost their heads...yes! an example of a woman, mother and Queen, the mirror of her mother! Stop idealize Joanna

I agree that the other two would have been better as monarchs. But the thing with the Communeros is that Juana did not trust them. She was not in a position to check whether their accusations against her son were true or not. When she resisted their offers, they seemed to intend to use her as a puppet. So she chose the safer option - her family.
