King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden opens parliament in 1974

The last time the King actually opened the parliament in this sense. With the new constitution of 1974 the King's role within the State apparatus in Sweden was significantly reduced. This ceremony was replaced by a much simpler ceremony, where the Prime Minister reads the government policies.

Much more Powerful than the ceremony that followed. The King opening the parliament from the Silver throne was an old tradition. I hope we will one day bring this tradition back.

Solemne y digno como deben de ser las aperturas de los parlamentos. Es una pena cómo está ceremonia se ha degradado tanto. Ojalá vuelva a establecerse este protocolo digno del reino de Suecia

The Instrument of Government (1975) stripped the King of all residual powers. Essentially, Sweden became a republic in all but name, and the Speaker of the Riksdag assumed several of the functions that formerly belonged to the monarch. There is no longer a constitutional basis for this ceremony because the King no longer has the prerogative to open, prorogue, or dissolve the Riksdag.

@@davidpersinger7588 Yes, true. Sweden is basically a parliamentary republic with a mascot. Governments aren't even formed in the King's name anymore.

@@rafadantas.6872 Because the sentiment among socialists (and others as well) at the time was antiroyalist or at least not as in favor of the royals as the right was. But there was a compromise made between different political factions and unions, to make Sweden into a nearly republican state all but in name instead of removing the monarchy completely - during the rule of Palme. That's my take on it atleast.

@@Vestegnenforlife He doesn't even have nominal headship of the government though. Like in the UK system, this can be a useful theoretical check on the political abuse of authority and would add a certain majesty to the monarchy as even if they don't use the powers on a day-to-day basis they would be even more a living symbol of the state. Its my understanding that Swedish monarchs have not practiced any real political power since 1917 so taking even the nominal powers away seemed a bit contemptuous (even if ostensibly it was merely codifying into law what was practice anyways).
