Hi there!
It’s great to meet you 🥰
My name is Maneetpaul Singh, but my friends call me Maneet (pronounced muh-neet). I'm a bookworm from Connecticut who loves tech. When I bought my first e-reader in 2020, I began reading more than I ever had before. I’ve made it my mission to help people fall in love with reading through Book Tech.
Think of me like the MKBHD of books.
There are three things I want you to know.

I think the Kindle is and will be number 1 for a long time because the vast majority of people use the device exactly what it was made for: reading books. For the rest there are countless devices. Honestly, I don't see the point in reading a comic in e-ink, with the much greater colors, definition, and speed on a tablet. I think e-inks escape their purpose nowadays. The only things I would change about the Kindle would be the processing and a stylus. And an intermediate size, 7, 8 inches perhaps... I know these configurations exist, but here in Brazil they cost triple the price.

Well, Kindle falls behind but not in terms of the quality... BOOX e-readers are expensive but not built to last. Repairs cost 50-70% of the original cost, and you have to pay shipping to the repair centre and from the repair centre (about $50 just for logistics). I had bad experiences with them despite their versatility. I've never had issues with Kindle readers, have 3 and all work fine.

@@Daniel-tm9fg Yes, indeed. I have 3 Kindles, the oldest one is over 10 years old. I only bought new ones because of the updates. I've never had any problems with them. It is a resistant, practical, cheap device that performs 100% for what it was designed for. That's why I think it will reign supreme for a long time to come. And I use my tablet for...tablet things😁

It’s a bit of a mixed bag with tech updates on e-readers because (as you say) I just want a device to get out of the way and let me focus on reading. With as much as Kindle devices can cost, I’m happy (in a way) that they’re not refreshed often because I don’t think the screen is going to get much better for sharpness or for customizations of fonts and such. So, in my view (even as a tech-obsessed person), I’m ok with slow tech on e-readers as long as there are page turn buttons. Oasis or bust!! Ha! Thanks for another great review, Sir!

I'm tempted now. I like the speech-to-text for taking notes, I love the idea of downloading different apps for reading, and some of my textbooks are much easier to read because of the colour diagrams. I usually read them on my iPad but I don't travel with the iPad. I think I'm ok with adjusting settings but won't know until I try it. Thanks for reviewing it.

Great review! I recently purchased the Palma and considered the Tab Mini C instead for just $50 more (without the stylus), but this review makes me appreciate the Palma more as it has physical buttons and a bright screen perfect for reading. Honestly, sometimes I enjoy the simplicity of black and white more than the intense and vibrant colors of other LED and OLED screens, and will find myself going to the Palma for things like Instagram or Facebook so that I'm not overstimulated.

So using the Kindle app, you can scroll instead of using pages? I actually wish my Kindle WOULD scroll (unless it does and i just haven't figured it out yet). But I have a Paperwhite AND a Scribe and feel like getting a 3rd would just be nuts. That said, I've been using my Scribe for taking notes on a musical script or for my sheet music for chorus and sometimes it's SO slow that pages just won't load so I'm left hanging in a performance and wish it could do better.

I went with a BOOX tablet myself. I have a Kindle Oasis which I liked quite a bit. But the battery was terrible. I waited a few years for Amazon to have a better option with physical buttons. They failed to deliver. The battery on the Nova Air color is literally 10 times better than my oasis. There are definitely some downsides. The apps sometimes lag, the screen isn’t as snappy, and the settings take time to get used to. But having access to multiple reading sources and options is fantastic, and with the Nova Air C, there’s an optional case which gives you physical buttons. It ticked all the boxes for me personally.

Before the Scribe came out, I would've agreed that Amazon was falling behind, and that it seemed like they stopped caring about their e-reader fans. However, now, I wouldn't say either. People keep their Kindles "FORRREEEVVVERRR".... so, it's actually nice not to experience regret every year, when another hardware upgrade comes out (I'm looking at you iPhone...and all phones really). Even passing a 2-year cycle, where they don't refresh a model doesn't feel like a bad thing. My Paperwhite works just as well as it did when I bought it, and will work just as well 2 years from now (If I don't upgrade before then). For simply reading books...it's perfect, and doesn't "need" color.... Although, I have heard a rumor that Amazon will possibly be coming out with a color e-reader in 2025....which is actually earlier than I thought they would. So, we'll see....if it happens, and how expensive it will be.

Kindle is just for reading. 6 or 6.8 inch, warm (or not), usb c, is just enough. I don´t need color to read, or a stylus, a just need read literature, period.

My tab mini c froze and won't let me do factory reset (light turns on). Support isn't that great and have to send in for repair. Had for over 2 months. Can't use specific library apps due to android version. It's okay for reading, but the color isn't that great. Definitely need light on for color and it is washed out. Stylus can only really be used with its own apps. I don't recommend.

Amazon might have a color Kindle next year 2025. 40% - 60% price increase and will probably be available for the size of a scribe and paperwhite.

BUT…. Onyx uses an RGB additive color layer to “make” color just like your phone. The problem with this is that Reflective color, like print, uses Subtractive color space. The Kindle, Kobo.. any eink screen is based on Reflective space. That is why the Onyx or any Kaleido RGB color system is gray, dark, yellows are brownish and only support 4000 plus colors. On the flip side, E-Ink company is developing a cyan , magenta, yellow white screen that uses reflective, subtracted color space and will produce 20000+ colors with a higher resolution. The present version is slow, but new prototypes show real promise. It is likely that Amazon is waiting for this tech to mature because, when it comes out, all the Onyx type color devices will be dropped like a hot potato. My background- 46 years in color management in print and subtractive color space.

Amazon makes devices for the masses, in general. A $399 Kindle will have limited appeal, only your hardcore ebook reader is going to spend $300+.
