This is the right way to play Bach, I think. There is no "fireworks" like many others enjoy to do. It is sure an awesome performance!

I don't comment on KZread much, but this performance is truly exceptional! Her performance of Bach is keen and alive--it just makes me want to close my eyes and smile.I purchased her WTC and Open Goldberg Variantions several months back and keep going back to listening to them both. I have been listening to her WTC and OGV for several months now and continue to enjoy them immensely. I have sampled many Bach performers over the years and Kimiko, I believe, has done the finest job, she has corrected interpretive issues I have had with performers before her. Not in one single case here have I thought the question. "Why did she do it that way"? ..each piece speaks the absolute truth to me. She has put some serious thought and research into this because what I believe she has achieved is a true reference on Bach interpretation and performance on the modern Piano--and what a piano to play on! Astounding in every sense of the word. Magnificient!!

I'm found of the tempi chosen and the overall insight of Ms Ishizaka's interpretation, not mechanical at all but above all "natural" and fair to the spirit of this work. It seems to flow with a great sensitivity put at the service of the score ; a most faithfull reference.

I can't express what I want to say because my English, but!!! I like Bach, especially clavier songs of Bach. So, I listen to ...... a lot of this ....so called The Well-Tempered Clavier 1. And the one thing that I can say is .....she is one of the best player who plays Bach now!! Surely, trill is ..... I feel if her trill is so faster ,maybe it's better. But!! Any way, she has ears to listen to a lot of melody, and has ability to control 3 or 4 melody. She has talent that can highlight the charm of the song !!

Hi, can you clarify why you say that? Is it a literal, or qualitative response? Do you mean of all people who play WTC fugues, only a few of them play the C-major fugue well? Or do you say this to reflect your own understanding of the difficulty of this fugue over other fugues in WTC 1? Thanks.

Curtis Pro She has a precision to her playing but also humanity. And yes, that first fugue of the first book does require a lot of finger changes and some craft if it is not to sound disjointed and odd. She produces a fully-integrated piece of music. Playing a Bosendorfer helps too, they are really good for Bach and greatly underrated.

If you meant to say at an elite level, like she is, that is different. Sorry if I came off rude, just pointing out that theres many other talented/gifted pianists+Lifters, and that olympic lifting and powerlifting are 2 different sports LOL. Also unfortunately powerlifting is not in the olympics (though it is at the world games, and special olympics etc)

Sure Mason & Hamlin is great...and it's much more affordable than the Bösendorfer. But Bösendorfer still is the Rolls Royce of Grand pianos: It even takes 30-50% more time to produce one, than a Steinway! It is sublime in every way. The pedigree is historic: Brahms, Liszt, Dvorak, Benjamin Britten, Richard Wagner, Bela Bartok, Oscar Peterson, André Previn, The Beatles, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Victor Borge, Tori Amos, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Lionel Richie, Anton Rubienstein and many other composers/mucisians had a Bösendorfer. And all of the three tenors...to quote Placido Domingo: "Many pianist try to sound like singers. Me personally, I always try to sound like a Bösendorfer" :-)

It's purely subjective. For me, this is the piano. But it sounds different than other European pianos. I like that it isn't so broad and blending, has a slightly nasal, metallic, "tinge" sound. Some don't like it for that reason.

Anyone who can play the whole book 1 (or 2 - or both) in a sitting, from memory, deserves serious respect. That said, I find a lot of this playing a little too mechanical. I favor a looser, freer way of playing these pieces. Too often, after I mention something about Bach, people will say "isn't his music very mathematical?" I think this is a rather poor way to think of Bach's music, but I think the stereotype is fostered by mechanical playing. It also doesn't help that people have shallowly created a sort of dichotomy between pre-romantic music and romantic music, as if romantic music has total claim to soulfulness and expressiveness. Anyway, the music should sing, first and foremost. While not exactly how I would play the pieces, I think Egarr's recording of the WTC on harpsichord captures some of the freedom that I think is possible and desirable in this music. I do like that she doesn't hurry the pieces as much as some do.

T.A. Priest Yes - I would say you're on target with your observation. Notice the muscular development in her arms in just the wrong place for a pianist. This is a sign of excessive tension.

Fernando Gonzalez Camus Thanks for responding to my comment! That is interesting - that she was a weight-lifter. If anything, that tells me that her forearms have become overly "intelligent". But if we look closely, we can see the excessive flexing of those muscles, and that, I believe, is a liability for her. Very difficult to "unlearn" those muscular movements at this age. But I am thrilled to listen to her very unique way of playing anyway! She certainly has a keen ear for the counterpoint of these pieces.

I agree... is a little too mechanical. There are two sides: those who consider to adopt the harpsichord type mechanics or the ones that say that if its played in a piano it has to take the advantage of the mechanics that the piano forte offers... IDK

She looks exactly like my ex. My ex was a Korean chick, but into the wrong king of thing. I loved her anyway. Now, at this moment I don't know where she is. I always wanted an Asian chick that could sit down and play some piano. Yet, I know I am dreaming; because no one is single.

Yes, and because there were no modern concert grand pianos in Bach's time perhaps these would sound best or most authenic on a clavier period instrument of Bach's time. I think if Bach were around he would encourage the use of pedal very sparingly on a modern instrument.

There is nothing dry about this interpretation.... Bach should not be romanticized. When I hear Bach I want to hear the universe churning. not schmaltzy human emotion. Her Bach is fantastic.

Why shouldn't Bach be romanticised? He must have had his romantic moments, since he fathered twenty children to his two beloved wives, who, one hopes, if they did not hear the universe churning, at least sometimes felt the Earth move.... It's good to hear and enjoy different interpretations. Earl WIld, one of the greatest piano masters of all time, said in his inimitable Memoir, that if a musician doesn't feel he or she has something to say with a piece, something to bring to it, then he or she shouldn't perform it. He cited the example of a tutorial where he suggested the student could try playing a piece a certain way. The student protested "But last Wednesday you told me to play it this other way!" Wild replied "Yes, but last Wednesday it was raining, and today it's sunny!" WIld also spoke of how Jorge Bolet, another of the piano giants, referred with disgust to "The urtext mob" who claimed there was only ever one definitive way to interpret a piece.

romanticized in the way one would play late Beethoveen to say music through Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms to Rachmaninoff. Lots of legato added sustain pedal... this is not Bach. Not romantic in the emotive sense. Some of Bach's music is beyond sensual.

She plays the left hand a little AHEAD or BEHIND the tempo of the right hand, as a pupil always play ( Like two persons playing without one hearing what the other plays, out of sync ). Thank god there are Glenn Gould or Andras Schiff to get a soul.
