J.S.Bach - French Suites

Andras Schiff - Piano
BWV 812 813 814 815 816 817
The French Suites, BWV 812--817, are six suites which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) between the years of 1722 and 1725. The suites were later given the name 'French' (first recorded usage by Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg in 1762) as a means of contrast with the English Suites (whose title is likewise a later appellation). The name was popularised by Bach's biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel, who wrote in his 1802 biography of Bach, "One usually calls them French Suites because they are written in the French manner." This claim, however, is inaccurate: like Bach's other suites, they follow a largely Italian convention.
There is no surviving definitive manuscript of these suites, and ornamentation varies both in type and in degree across manuscripts.

Andreas Schiff once said during an interview that he always starts every day by first playing a piece of Bach’s music regardless of whatever else he’s professionally required to perform. It says a lot about his regard for Bach but also explains why he plays so effortlessly with deep emotion and precision. We the audience are the beneficiaries of his devotion. Thanks Andreas.

Schiff wanders through the landscape of Bach's music in a state of sheer delight, familiarity and wonderment. His joy transcends all other thoughts as he is engulfed by Bach's magic and he communicates it to us without a trace of self-consciousness. No musician can do more.

I agree with everything you wrote, but to me it's incredible that this is only scratching the surface. As others wrote in the replies, the partitas, concerti, the french overture, italian concerto, two part inventions and sinfonias, I think i remember seeing him play the toccatas on spotify. Basically he played all of music by Bach. He might have omitted some much lesser known works, but I doubt there are many. And then... complete Mozart sonatas and many concerti, many Haydn sonatas and concerti, all Beethoven sonatas (I think there are a few violin sonatas as well, if not all) and concerti and other works of all of the classical trio composers works like variations. Most of Schubert sonatas, Impromtus, moments musicaux, wanderer, four hand pieces, songs, Chopin preludes, some etudes, i think he recorded the 2nd concerto, I know there are recordings of him performing first two ballades and scherzi (the only recording of him I can remember not liking very much), all important Schumann works, a lot of Brahms, both concerti, clarinet sonatas and many other works, Janacek, Bartok, a lot of chamber music. And conducting. He is out of this world. Whenever I study a new piece I check if there is a Schiff recording, and usually there is unless its russian or impressionist music.

Sometimes, I think, GG’s slower tempi and more computer-like evenness of sound serve the pieces better, but then at other times the two pianists switch the other way. I love them both. As for Lang Lang, well, he should stay safely away from Bach and stick to Liszt, Chopin and the great Russian composers, where he excels, if he values his reputation!

As with Schiff's live performance of the English Suites, I am in complete awe of his musicianship. His sense of the inner pulse of the music, his balancing of voices and his ability to make us grasp the structure of these works is without parallel. That he is able to do all this from memory only underscores how utterly Schiff inhabits these magnificent works. Bach's music never fails to exemplify the sense of balance, joy, and nuance to which every life should aspire.

***** It is not hard at all to memorize the entire structure - your hands do this for yourself. The hardest part is to improve your technical skills (practice makes perfect). I've studied guitar and I noticed that practicing classical composers teaches your hands of the musical sense implied in any composition. Also the whole piece must be audible in your mind as if you put a record on. It's quite amusing experience indeed.

Bach’s keyboard music may not be as overtly flashy technically as that of say Rachmaninov or Liszt. But it is SO much more difficult to perform! With Bach, there is no where to hide. You can’t connect the various contrapuntal lines by just blurring it all together with the use of the sostenuto pedal, the way many pianists do with piano music of the Romantic era. With Bach you really can’t use the sostenuto pedal at all, as is the case with Schiff’s brilliant performances here. He’s creating smooth legato lines by using enormously complex fingering. And yet he makes it all sound so effortlessly beautiful! This is but one of the many reasons why Schiff is among the greatest of Bach keyboard performers of all time. I have major respect and admiration for this man. He has always been a source of enormous inspiration for me as a pianist. 🙏

What a phenomenon - beyond our understanding, but so be it - that our awareness, our understanding of Bach's music keeps evolving. I loved listening years ago to Rosalyn Tureck, then fell head over heels with Glenn Gould. Since I heard him in his New York Debut at the Grace Rainey Rogers auditorium, I have been amazed at every moment that Andras Schiff has shared with us his Bach, and the amazing part of all this is that his interpretations keep evolving. What we were grateful years ago, is even more of a gift today. Listening to this great musician bringing us Bach is the deepest spiritual experience. Just try listening to the September 7th WTC from Royal Albert Hall. God bless you Andras.

listening & writing this on my M-B - alas no tub ( and i don't think i'd dare ,,, there are no more 17 inchers around ... and the sound is really quite good !! ) i would give it to you , a few teaspoons of MacCallan could 'go a long way' , or some aged Black Bush , i often chose the triple distilled but so what -- its a choice performance here and fine recording too ... well , lets say , just a little better than my son's rendition ( 1st part of 812 ) - rushing off to his mates . - inneresting conversation down , to Perry Weiner's comment , i'm also a afficionado for most of Gould's Bach interpretations , more than Schiff's , in general , but this one here i find absolutely excellent , or perhaps i'm just a bit 'under the weather' -? ( Dreary Days in Emsterdem .. ) maybe Gould's 'clockwork-tempo' was a little too much for me after my son's .... - letz say , he could have done better .. Now wheres that bottle ?!?! - what does Sheldon have to say about that ? - a "warm beverage" - ???? can't stop this da... beautiful playing , its just too good - Big Bang 'll just have to wait , NO THYME before it anyway !!!!-?

Mr. Schiff will go down in history as one of the leading interpreters of the music of JS Bach. How lucky we are to have these performances recorded and available for posterity. Can you imagine if this technology had existed between 1685 and 1750? Mr. Schiff's performance may well be the closest thing we see to a performance by the composer himself.

Quotes about J. S. Bach: The immortal god of harmony. - Ludwig van Beethoven Now there is music from which a man can learn something. - W. A. Mozart (on hearing Bach motets in Leipzig) Bach is like an astronomer who, with the help of ciphers, finds the most wonderful stars. - Friederick Chopin Bach is the beginning and end of all music - Max Reger I had no idea of the historical evolution of the civilized world's music and had not realized that all modern music owes everything to Bach. - Niccolai Rimsky-Korsakov Bach is the supreme genius of music... This man, who knows everything and feels everything, cannot write one note, however unimportant it may appear, which is anything but transcendent. He has reached the heart of every noble thought, and has done it in the most perfect way. - Pablo Casals

If one must choose between Schiff and Gould, I think Schiff wins: there is perfect consistency; there is unfailing obedience to the composer's text; there is no quirkiness in interpretation; there is no humming or other superfluous sound; and in their faces and body language, both of them are immersed in the beauty of the music. BUT with Gould, I feel egoism (preoccupation with self) but with Schiff I only sense respect and adoration for J.S. Bach himself, which I feel transcends, or blocks the presence of any egoism that may be there. I'm not talking about egotism, which involves an inflated sense of self-importance. I just feel Schiff giving only the composer's voice to his music, while Gould gives some of his own voice to it. Whether that matters depends on your point of view. With most composers from the baroque period onward, it seems to me to be an academic argument that will never be resolved, a matter of opinion. With Bach, I sense a precision and perfection in form and structure that requires me to defer completely to the composer. I am looking for one way to play it: my perception only of what Bach wants me to do, not what I WANT to do. So, as much as I revere Gould, Schiff is my reference against which all others are compared.

Interesting. I also find that I prefer Schiff, but not because I think he’s more of a strict interpreter: in fact, I sense a bit of a romantic involvement and a softer touch that I associate with a strong command of the material. I don’t think he’s doing anything but respecting the emotion that’s already in there. With Gould I am in awe of Bach; but with Schiff I get closer emotionally to the music.
