"Kimi Ga Yo" - Japan National Anthem Japanese & English lyrics

"Kimigayo" (君が代?) is Japan's national anthem. It is also one of the world's shortest national anthems in current use, with a length of 11 measures and 32 characters.[1][2][3] Its lyrics are based on a Waka poem written in the Heian period (794-1185), sung to a melody written in the later Meiji period. The current melody was chosen in 1880, replacing an unpopular melody composed eleven years earlier.
Although Kimigayo had long been Japan's de facto national anthem, it was only legally recognized in 1999 with the passage of Law Regarding the National Flag and National Anthem.
Japanese Lyrics:
君が代は
千代に八千代に
さざれ石の
巌となりて
苔の生すまで
English Translation:
May your reign
Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations,
Until the pebbles
Grow into boulders
Lush with moss

The Japanese national anthem is about 1000 years old. Therefore, this national anthem is written in Japanese that Japanese people do not usually use. Even for Japanese people, it is very difficult to understand the meaning of the national anthem unless we learn the meaning of the national anthem at school. Also, this song made 1000 years ago was not written for Japan. Therefore, the first phrase “Kimigayo” did not mean Japan, but a loved one. At that time, this song was a love song that was written with the desire of loved ones to live long. Now it has become a national anthem with the meaning that Japan, a country we love, can live a long and healthy life. Thank you guys!

Thank you for that explanation. I was confused about the translation of 君, which said "your" meaning somebody's reign. But my experience with 君 is that it's a very informal way to say you -- and I couldn't understand that use of "you" to refer to the emperor's reign. But looking at it as something written to a loved one -- and then seeing that loved one as not the emperor but Japan itself makes sense. I usually don't like national anthems as they often have a militaristic feel to them -- my country's (US) certainly does. But when I lived in Japan I loved to hear the melody, and I appreciate it even more now knowing what the words mean.

@@kasseesmythe8738 In modern Japanese, 君 is informal( or particularly used to call young men like 田中君). According to my dictionary, which deals with Japanese in the 1000's, 君 meant the emperor. Chinese would agree with me, though I don't know Chinese. 君 also meant a master, lord, or aristocrat as a polite way. 君 in the song was used this way. It is said that the original song(or waka) wished for the health of people who the singer sang to.

@@alananana995 Yes, I'm familiar with kun as attached to a young man's name, as chan is for children, and san for normal usage,. But I'm very surprised to find that it was originally a term used for the emperor. Thanks for that , and the rest of your explanation. So now I know that there are lovely lyrics to go with a lovely melody. Thank you..

“Kimigayo” is one of the poems 1000 years ago. The author of this poem is an unnamed people. The meaning of this poem is that a loved one wants you to live long. In this poem, there will be no revolution, no bravery, no enemies. It is only a desire that the people want to live healthy and peacefully.

大和武早 says , the subject of the original poem was not the emperoror nor the Japanese reign , so this translation is wrong . I wish so , too because it is a nice poem , but I also think this poem was used by the government intentionally to mean the emperor's reign , so the translation in this film should be correct . Not so different than "God save the Queen" . I don't think it's something wrong .

@ララ Well, as an American, I can't blame any Japanese for feeling that way, especially if they lived through it. But as a human being of planet Earth, I'd like to think the horrific suffering we caused Japan in the mid 1940's would be a lesson for all humans to never again use these instruments of obliteration. We are all one species sharing one planet, and whatever we do to each other affects everything and everyone. It's high time we learned to love and respect one another, lest we lose this precious thing we call "civilization". Also, what kind of name is "Ra Ra"?

What is the recent memory we have of Japan? The world cup in Brazil, after the game, the Japanese stayed at the stadium and cleaned up what was dirty. A different culture about the world, with respect to others, to the elderly. It is very proud for us Brazilians, to have the largest Japanese community in the world, outside of Japan. Japan and Brazil, eternal brotherhood.

Fun fact, most national anthems in the world today came about after the age of nationalism began in the 18th century and they coincide with the French revolution, European colonialism and the modern world. The Japanese national anthem, in sharp contrast is significantly older (about 1000 years old) and thus precedes the European Enlightenment period, European colonialism and the modern world as we know it today. Within the Japanese national anthem you find the spirit of a time drastically different. A medieval era of nobility, high culture and civilizational tradition radically different from the contemporary liberal-democratic spirit of the contemporary era.

Julian Zhang However, it is the youth's duty, our duty, to clean the shit piled on by the elder generations. Unfortunately, the Japanese government is trying to keep that shit on the table. Luckily, there are Japanese people who are smarter than that. Admire those teachers who decided to throw their government-approved text books out the windows and make their own history text books containing thorough WWII historical facts, and unadulterated description of Japanese war crimes and shame. I guess one country's liberals are better than another.

Love and respect Japan 🇯🇵 from 🇬🇧 Simultaneously similar and different to our land Since I was little I was fascinated with Japan's rail system which aesthetically rivals that of Britain's distant steam past in a different way. As a young adult Gen Zer I prefer traditional aesthetics but Japan's modernist style seems to be unique but it needs to be a healthy balance. Furthermore I also became fascinated with Japanese kaiju. It has several issues but hopefully they can be solved or at the very least made less worse for a better future. I hope to visit there at least once one day!
