that's what i thought. some people might say "oh that's not racist so stop getting defensive over it" but to heck with that. these kind of jokes are thrown in casually in Korean tv shows and people find it funny. i don't see anything fun with it. she seemed quite serious about it and i don't blame her. her generation was heavily bought up on stereotypes and always believed them to be true. it still doesn't make it right though. kinda makes me sad, rather than angry :(

Please learn to view these shows with a different lens you usually use to view the world. the lady was making an observation, based on her lived experience. Obviously her comment wasn’t aimed at anyone particularly to say that “ this person has dark skin = homeless”. Obviously she was saying that a tanned + long haired native korean looked the part. This could just be an offhand comment made without much thought but it really shows how such comments, not thought-through, becomes an echo chamber of negativity. Please learn to look and understand the world around you through context.

People have unconscious bias and its these little comments that is intrinsic to the culture, if not stamped out is naturally adopted as ok from - one generation to the next. It is effectively adopting a mindset that having dark skin is life limiting and negative. If you lived in a world of the reverse maybe more people can see the hurtfulness better. Would a white/light skinned person like to hear flippant comments that they are ''colourLESS'', TanLESS, ''sickly pale'', raw, ghostly, UNtanned etc. Those comments if reinforced over time UNDERmine that group and be normalised as inferior and undesirable. You can tell the lady in the video didn't mean to be offensive but her mindset is based on her surroundings. This does not make it right. A lot of people are still not self aware. However, if broadcasters don't step in and edit content appropriately they are reinforcing stereotypes and part of the problem.
