Fun fact: If Elser had succeeded in killing Hitler in 1938, it is quite likely that everybody would think of him as a villain and Hitler would be considered a great statesman, killed before he could fulfill his destiny. Maybe everybody would say: If just that evil man had not killed Hitler in 1938, thereby making room for Goebels, WWII could have been avoided...

diamond_man1000 Goebels was Hitler’s propaganda minister, and the next Führer when Hitler commit suicide (only for roughly 6 hours before he killed him self). So likely he’d be next in line.

it probably would. Most of the Germans never questioned Hitler until the suffering of war took a toll on them. People believed that he was "a stable genius "and was "always right". Its all other people's fault and their, along with they leader, was misunderstood and mistreated by the "enemy of the people" and "swamp of elites." Oh dear, we are in trouble, aren't we...

ShadowAkatora maybe not. WW2 would never had advanced after the invasion of Poland, which meant several countries would never have been involved. The irony is that if he had succeeded, few people would have known the true extent of what he did.

macine 123 (warning, I’m not defending Hitler I’m making a historical correction, he was a piece of shit) Actually, a lot of the time Hitler either went with his generals or override them with better decisions, later on in the war he was making bad decisions, sure, but early on, when it really mattered, he was making good choices, it was after the war that the generals started blaming hitler’s bad strategic decisions for the loss of the war

Wanderer 505 agreed. One example of this is during Operation Barbarossa (invasion of the Soviet Union) Hitler wanted to take the rich oil fields in the south near Stalingrad, knowing this would cripple their army due to lack of oil. However, his generals wanted to keep pushing towards Moscow, hoping a surrender would come after they took the city. Hitler ignored them and tried to take the oil, but to be fair he did make an idiotic decision while trying to take the oil fields that didn't quite lose him the war but defintely helped the allies.

Elser deserves his own movie and reverence way much more than Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg and his fellows were military officers and they only tried the coup in 1944, when it was all very late anyway and millions already had died. They were opportunists, if the Wehrmacht had won the Russian campaign, they would have sided with Hitler. But Elser was serious about stopping Hitler from the getgo.

if Elser succeeded Hitler would be more powerful than he ever was alive, he would be martyred after claiming a victory for Germany and vindication for their humiliation after the first world war, he would've turned the dictator into an Icon... not to mention Hitler wouldn't be around to mess with the War plans.... If Elser attempted the assassination before Poland then maybe it would've worked

Ok mate but I've never heard about the movie until you mentioned it, which speaks a lot for itself... nearly every German student or people from other countries know about Stauffenberg but none about Elser. We have a road called Stauffenberg-Straße in my city, but Elserstraße? Nope. That was my point...

@@JimmyDean59 Hitler wasn't some lone madman, though. Depending on when you did your thing, his replacement could have been more/less effective. But I stand by America (and Britain) staying out of World War I, and therefore II, for free. It'd be very hard to do much worse than 100 million dead from international communism in 20th century. All the better if the Federal Reserve could have been prevented, though that's the sort of thing that a segment of society would have tried to put over sooner or later.

Wow thank you for this. Everyday on my way to work, I pass the statue of Georg Elser at the train station of Königsbronn. Its a life sized figure made from rusted metal, waiting at the Plattform for his train to Munich. He is holding a briefcase with sticks of dynamite sticking out. The memorial has only been put up a few years ago as people arround here are still kind of split in wether to regard him as a hero or a terrorist that needlessly killed people. For me, he's a hero. He came closer then anyone else to killing hilter and changing the course of history, and he wasn't a nazi like many of the more well known conspirators. I think what he did took a lot of bravery, and he had more foresight then most other people in our small community. I think it's important to stand up to tyranny and fascism, and I'm glad I'm reminded of this spirit on my commute. There's also a small museum, if anyone is every in the south of Germany and wants to know more.

I feel bad for the guy at the mine the poor guy thought he was just getting extra help but in the end he wound up in a camp

You are a good story teller. Even though this is history the way you presented the countdown to the explosion really got me nervous and I could feel the pressure. Keep up the great work

I wish people like him were more well known and talked about. Not everyone blindly followed Hitler as it's often portrayed, even before the war started. This man almost single handely achieved what hundreds of high ranking officers failed to do.

Like don't be a narcisits xenofhobic maniac who will murder millions, but also let people hate or fear what is different, which is a natural response, without force feeding them the latest ideology or assume everyone is or should behave the same. Gradualism is key. If people actually respected or understood our differences rather than completely trying to erase them or tear us apart because of them the world would be richer.

How are people on the internet getting triggered by one political joke from a person who is probably not even particularly interested in their politics and is just making a joke? And how are others "agreeing" with the joke? Eastory has not made his opinion about American politics known, so the joke can be either a comparison of Trump to Hitler or a pointing-out of the presumed idiocy of the claims, making it funny to both sides of the political spectrum {so it's a good joke.} That is my explanation, now please stop arguing about American politics.

People should read the Wiki on Georg Elser. Despite his modest and difficult upbringing he was skilled in music, carpentry, and invention. His faith was in the common person. The mechanism for his bomb so evolved that it was turned into a manual by the gestapo due to its capabilities. His story also outlines the intense desire of the Nazi's to ignore the simple truth Elser told them, despite constant torture, to get him to "confess" to a story Hitler had invented. It's a study in contrasting psychologies. One Nazi who had interrogated Elser wrote: "You know what Elser's problem was? This man of the people loved ordinary people; he laid out for me passionately and in simple sentences how, for the masses in all countries, war means hunger, misery, and the death of millions. Not a pacifist in the usual sense, his reasoning was quite simplistic: Hitler is war-and if he goes, there will be peace..."

The story I heard was that heavy fog on the night of the speech prevented Hitler from travelling by airplane as originally planned, so he took a train. Because of the longer travel time back to Berlin, he left Munich a bit earlier than expected.

What a hero, to work so many nights in such a danger.

I believe the invisible lamp monument in east Berlin is dedicated to this man. It is ironically located close to the former fuhrer bunker.

I'd heard of this story before but not in such detail, it's strange & unjust that Elser isn't more celebrated, he acted alone with with a determination & ability to overcome all the difficulties he faced & unlike the 1944 conspirators whom waited until the Reich was facing collapse, Elser attempted to prevent conflict.

When you consider what this one man managed to achieve without any outside help at all, whilst living in a totalitarian police state, is both extraordinary and also alarming. Watched the movie 13 minutes... im intrigued

Even after years of assasination attempts, the man resorted to commiting suicide just before a bomb finally detonated. Despicable, yet lucky.

sometimes, the comments are as interesting as the videos.... i wasnt aware of this story so thanks for posting it. i think whats interesting is that we are all looking at this with the benefit of hindsight and knowing what happened in ww2. had it not happened, this man might be judged differently. i believe there is some research going on in to predicting pre-crime, a-la the film the minority report, but using Artificial intelligence, rather than 3 mystics. i am not sure of the ethics of convicting people of stuff they havent yet done. i mean who hasnt had a bad thought ever, but it doesnt mean you act it out.... you can argue that you might save millions of lives, but you might equally be introducing a system to condemn innocent people ( which ironically is the thing you are trying to stop).

If the Assassination plan was successful all the lives lost in the war wouldn’t have occurred. My Grandfather wouldn’t have to had fought in World War 2 either. He survived the war though, but sadly he died in 2004. He was a Canadian Soldier.

Actually Hitler ended his speech and left earlier because he couldn't take a plane to get back to Berlin due to bad weather conditions and instead took the train. He survived/avoided the assault because of bad weather.
