Great picks! The big one for me that you didn't include was The Tea Party! They deserved to be huge everywhere. I know they were really popular in Australia as well, so that might have been why you didn't include them here. Also, as a fellow Winnipeger, The Watchmen were fantastic as well. Speaking of the New Meanies, do you remember that they were originally called The Blue Meanies but were forced to change their name, especially to get that major label deal? Great video!! Thanks! 🤘

Tea Party is awesome, especially those first two albums.

A few of my favorites. The Age of Electric, Sons Of Freedom, The Northern Pikes, and Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts.

I absolutely love Big Sugar! I used to work at the Town Pump in Vancouver in '94, and they played one night. Absolutely kicked a$$! We even smoked with the Rastafarian bassist out back after their set. I Mother Earth also played with Our Lady Peace. Sounded so good in a small club. Much Music sponsored a band one night... can't remember who, think it was The Four Horsemen. Terry David Mulligan and Natalie Richard where there for the broadcast. Natalie spent most of the night downstairs stuffing her nose. 😋 Also... the Hip played Woodstock 99... opened Day 2. The crowd was full of Canadian flags, and even a Quebec flag. Fantastic set. Gord Downie was a master at going off in his own world, all improv, without missing a beat. We sure miss him. 😔

Headstones (need these albums released on vinyl!!) , Big House, Syre just to name a few.

How neither of the first two Tea Party albums made it on to this list is a complete mystery to me.

If you like Sloan I highly recommend The Super Friendz, also from Halifax. They put out two great power pop albums in the mid-late 90s and both can be found on vinyl, but they aren't too common outside of Canada. "They Promised Us Jobs" by Sour Landslide from 1997 is another personal favorite, but it's only out on CD.

I’m absolutely stunned that Racine by Sass Jordan (1992) wasn’t here. I consider it, arguably, one of the top 5 all time Cdn studio releases. I still listen to this album. Time flies girl. ❤

I was a DJ at a university nightclub in the 90s, and got to see/meet alot of these bands and more, as they travelled through. One time, I was tasked with doing lights for Junkhouse (they didn't have any, or something), despite only having dancefloor lights available to me - basically over the audience. I did what i could - some, luckily, went automatically with the music. I even used the mirror ball, at a time when it seemed appropriate, during a chorus. Tom, from the band, gave a shout out to me as "Disco Joe", and to this day, I'm not sure if he was being sarcastic or not! He seemed like a cool dude, so i think he was actually appreciative. I shouldn't take the nickname as an insult either, cuz those were the the lights i was using, right? Let's go with that. 😀

I was reminded of Alex Lifeson’s solo project Victor which featured a series of guest vocalists. One of which was Edwin from IME on the single Promise from that album.

Man thanks so much for highlighting a few of your favorite Canadian bands. Most I've never heard of or even seen on vinyl or CD. The only exception is Sloan which I recently found on Ebay but have yet to listen to. When I think of all the great Canadian artists in my collection starting with Neil, Joni and Leonard not to mention The Hip or even Blue Rodeo makes me glad and grateful for our neighbors up North....just goes to show that superlative talent is indeed universal!!

90's had some Canadian gems for sure including albums from OLP, Treble Charger, Big Wreck, Mathew Good Band, Odds... I know Ian Thornley is the only Canadian in Big Wreck but Ian Thornley is Big Wreck, but it is truly a crime against music that the album "In Loving Memory of" (1997) isn't regarded as one of the biggest 90's albums of all time globally....Big Wreck was a solid band.

Thanks for pointing out these albums Frank! Many of them I had never heard of and will stream and check them out. My favourite Canadian band as a teenager in the 80s and early 90s was Brighton Rock. They had one EP and three LP's. I was devastated at the time when they broke up after their 1991 album Love Machine. I just found out in the past year that their lead singer, Gerry McGhee, passed away of cancer during the pandemic. Honestly I liked Brighton Rock a lot more than The Tragically Hip!

Even though they had moderate success in the US, The Crash Test Dummies album, God Shuffled His Feet has no skips. I just saw them in Wisconsin in November and they still put on a great show.

Great album from Killer Dwarfs,,a hidden gem for sure! also no Canadian list would be complete without something from Kim Mitchell

Junkhouse's Strays was a great album that got some decent exposure here but not elsewhere. Rusty's Fluke was quality as well, not much exposure beyond these borders.

I mixed the New Meanies numerous times at the Sidetrack Cafe in Edmonton AB. Always a packed house. I've got some board recordings around here from those days... Loved that band!!!

Popular artists that come to mind are Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party, Moist, Matthew Good Band (all on vinyl at some point), but so many more that belong on the list that never had vinyl releases. Harem Scarem - "Mood Swings" ❤

Great video. Fellow Canadian in BC and I gotta say we had such awesome music in the 90's. MuchMusic was so much better then MTV and one album (or series of albums) that every Canadian knew were the Big Shiny Tunes. I have been hoping they would reissue them on vinyl for years. I sorta gave up hope but then found out a company in the UK is pressing them unofficially. I ordered one instantly and am now waiting for it to be delivered.

I had both of those CDs but particularly liked I Mother Earth's Dig album; I caught them at least once with Our Lady Peace. I remember listening to local band Doughboys - Crush album in 1993-94. For a rocker like you Frank, I have to recommend Sloan's Action Pact record from 2003 (I keep waiting for a repress). It's probably not your typical Sloan fan's first album pick, but other than the single The Rest Of My Life (which is good), the rest of the album is just "four on the floor" hard rock with an almost ACDC-ish guitar sound. Love it!

I think you're forgetting SKINNY PUPPY. I listened to them a lot in the 90s and still do today.

Hello Frank! I mother earth were quite big in my parts of Sweden back in the day. Both ”Dig” and especially their 2nd album ”Scenery and fish”. They flowed along over the pond with the Seattle wave and was ”One of the new bands” in the grunge scene. I haven’t got them on vinyl though. Rock on ! /R

My deep Canadian band that I thought would have been big but to my knowledge never where even in Canada is a The Bar Stool Prophets. Lots of great songs. Well written tunes.

I live in Germany and was a big fan of I Mother Earth's first album. In the 90s there were a few Canadian bands that I really liked, such as Moist and especially Econoline Crush, who I even saw live in Germany. Even now, there are always very interesting bands coming out of Canada that I really like. First and foremost Crown Lands, who I would describe as one of my favourite bands at the moment.

I can hear references to Led Zeppelin and Triumph (another great band from Canada 🍁). I'm curious to see what else will come in the next few years. 😊

I always dug that first I Mother Earth album.

Always been a huge fan of the various bands of rick white. Awesome indie/lofi/psychedelic music. Probably something many missed if they are not into the genre. Bands like eric's trip, elevator, elevator through etc. Many of the bands also involves my absolute favorite drummer of all time mark gaudet. Feels like hidden gems to me.

I don't know if everyone else missed them, but The Tea Party, specifically Edges of Twilight and the Tryptych albums. Highly recommend them as live performers. I got to see them live a couple of times. Agree with most of your picks, though! 👍

I saw I Mother Earth open for Dream Theater in the 90’s in Detroit. I own both those cd’s you showed. Good live show.

I first heard Sloan a few years ago, through the song "Who Taught You to Live Like That?", I have grown to really like them, my sister and I both always like the Killer Dwarves. Also, my dad purchased a C-Band Satellite television system in 1986, so we were able to watch the Canadian Much Music channel as well.

Cool video Frank. Some bands I haven't heard of. The 90s were a funny time for music. I tend to go to the early 90s for late to the party hair metal and then go to the late 90s for alt/nu-metal. The time in between is a bit of a mix. It's true songs do sound better when they start with a siren. Never thought of that. A couple that haven't been mentioned yet - the self titled Jesus Christ album from 94(a little Pantera sounding) and Alias who only just made it into the 90s with their self titled debut(some good hard rockers and the hit ballad).

Good video, Nice to see Killer Dwarfs been mentioned. This album has been on my wanted list for some time. Lol

Doughboys and Plumtree are also pretty good power pop/rock bands from Canada

Agree on Big Sugar, great show in a High School theater, The harmonica vibrated my pant legs, dust was falling from the rafters, their speakers were swaying but the sound was clean, Wild Ox moan was a show stopper.

Great picks. I remember Day For Night was one of those dollar bin pickups for our long ass roadtrips. Well, that cd stayed in the car for almost 2 weeks. It was the one that got me into them. Because i never liked them back then...*gets pelted with hard maple candies* Speaking of dollar bins. Thats where so many great canadian bands cds end up. Not sure if they got pressed to wax yet. But i will vote for Make A Pest A Pet by The Age Of Electric. Yes, that album with Remote Control on it. I think it was their second one. The first one is just as good. The Wonderful World Of The Pursuit Of Happiness is also a killer album. Right up there with their debut Love Junk. Malhavoch...i think i spelled it right. Industrial metal band. Kinda like Ministry. Think they only did 3 albums. Get Down would be the more known one. Haven't found anything by them in years. And going off the rails here, but I got to also pick Hi, How Are You Today, by Ashley MacIssac. Probably butchered his name. That song of his Devil In The Kitchen would even make grandparents ftom Newfoundland get in the mosh pit. Of course it would be the lead single because it's full on hardcore. And then the ballad Sleppy Maggie. Ah, such a beautiful song for being all in Gallic. Got to see him play in concert. Last song was Devil. Must've frightened the elderly who never heard it. But seeing a bunch of kids under the age of 10 go nuts with energy. So worth it! Now, i got to check my bag. Did i buy any today.....nope. just more classical. Oh, it did get reissued for RSD this year, but i would also pick Smiling Buddah Cabaret by 54*40. Radio Luv Song is another moshpit classic. Then again, that's the 1 off song. Not sure if they ever went back to that hardcore sound. But the song Ocean Pearl is pretty much the opposite, and actually might not even be on that album. Can't believe their biggest hit is probably Hootie & The Blowfish covering I Go Blind by them. Gob's Too Late, No Friends got reissued, but it's a reissued reissue. Apparently they went with the Nettwerk remix for the brand new pressing. Well, that's immediate disqualification from my list. They ruined a classic punk album by remixing the entire thing. Really sucks that Mint Records didn't have it on vinyl back then. Because that's the only mix I want. Speaking of Mint, how about some cuddlecore by Cub. So strange how Neko Case was their drummer for a bit. The song Freaky, off their last album Box Of Hair is also my favorite when i chew tinfoil. But if you want that delicate 90 second cute pop song. Ya got to go with Betti-Cola. Either the cd with all the bonus tracks. Or the double 7" set, that has i think 1 song not on the cd. Check out The Mint Is A Terrible Thing To Taste with them covering Killed By Death by Motorhead. I think that slow hillbilly version of Ace Of Spades by Coal is awesome. There's a video for it. Tankhog & Windwalker cover Ministry's Burning Inside and So What on it. Tristan Psionic was also a great band on the Sonic Unyon label. The one that looks like a full on red radiation attack to The Sound Of Music album cover. Great album. Its not that heavy. But you'll never hear it in the waiting room. I think Treble Charger was also on that label. The label threw a huge skateboarding party back in the 90s. But i can't even remember who all played, as they were using all 3 buildings on the fairgrounds...omg...was that the Kittens band that went after Free Kitten when they were just called Kittens? Getting side track. Eric's Trip is lo-fi 4 track heaven that was put out on Sub Pop. Glad they recently reissued the albums. So you won't have to shell out $100+ for an original pressing. Chixdiggit was also on Sub Poop. Heard their debut self titled album a couple weeks ago. First time in over 20 years. Kinda forgot how basic it was. It would pair well with any Ramones album. Speaking of Winnipeg. I recently found a cd by a band called Daypass - *!?# Out Patients, from 1997. Haven't played it yet. But was shocked seeing 1 copy on discogs for almost $200. And the last 2 sold for $150 & $175. But somehow I never found The Ruggedy Annes album in the 3 years i lived there. There's just way too many to list. And I've already been up for 37 hours now. Navy Blues is the best Beatles album that they never did. And Sloan is the next band I'm going to see, again. And much like all of the Eric's Trip side projects. Sloan also had some of their own. Just not who did what. Guess that's it for now.

Loved that you included Sven Gali , Slikk Toxic , and the Killer Dwarfs . I would of thrown in Big House out of Edmonton. Dollar in Pocket , Baby Doll were the singles . Unfortunately, only album was made . Age of Electric was another awesome band Smash L.A independent release, a band that should of been huge IMO

The Killer Dwarfs album is so good, i still listen to it to this day, one album i love from a band not mentionned here is Crush by the band Doughboys.

Moist is a band you definitely missed. They are my favorite band and were once featured on Beavis and Butthead--they just made fun of Canada the whole time the video was on. I live in US, but travelled to Canada to see them live. Also, Matthew Good Band and his solo albums are basically all masterpieces IMO. Oh one more, Gord Downie + Bob Rock "Lustre Parfait" is a hidden gem. (Oh, and the pic of I Mother Earth you used is actually a band called Crash karma, feat. Edwin of IME)

I really struggle to think of others. And I'm pretty sure my New Meanies CD has them still called Blue Meanies, which they were forced to change. Really glad you included them! Throbbin' Hoods were pretty cool, too. But Big Sugar - they were favorite live band in the 90s; probably saw them 4 times - better each time. Then I saw them a few years ago with Moist (which also didn't make your list!). I wish I did not witness that. I'm sad to say, it was like watching a subpar Big Sugar cover band. And I was so excited. Moist was awesome, though! Much better than I expected. Despite listening to rock radio all the time, 2 of their best songs were newish, and I had never heard them before. It was the same deal with Platinum Blonde, if you can believe that! Actual good new Canadian content, which they have to play, from bands people like, being ignored. It makes no sense.

I have the New Meanies CD and saw them in a club in Vancouver .Great band .

I LOVE I Mother Earth...my favorite album from them is Quicksilver Meat Dreams. (You can stream on youtube) They have Brian on vocals, not Edwin. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Absolute BANGER

Spent my New Year's Eve Y2K at a Big Sugar concert. If the end of the world apocalypse was going to happen - that's the only place I wanted to be.

Had a UHF channel early eighties? The Power Hour. Videos like MTV. Bands made cameo shorts. Oh No It's The Killer Dwarves! Grim Reaper, Fastway, UFO, Voi Vod. Cool stuff back then!

A radio station in Salt Lake City, Utah played a couple of songs from that Killer Dwarf’s record back in the early 90’s. Good stuff that I still enjoy today.

Hi Frank: I love Big Wreck - In Loving Memory Of... (WEA/Atlantic 1997). It may not qualify since "The Oaf" from the album was a Top Ten Hit in the USA. There are better tracks on the album. I have been meaning to listen to Sloan. Rock Always! - Heather

How could you not include "Splendor Solace" or "The Edges Of Twilight" by The Tea Party? They had a great dark psychedelia sound with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, as someone I knew in college said, "It's almost like having Cream back again". I saw a show they did at the now-defunct Club Toast in Burlington, Vermont here in the States; they were amazing.

Fellow Canuck here - I even lived in the Peg in the 80's. Most of the better known are already mentioned in the comments below but a favorite of mine was The Barstool Prophets from Eastern Ontario. 3 excellent albums 1993-7. Particularly good is their second album "Crank" 1985. P.S. I don't know any specifically but I am sure we are missing out on a lot of excellent Quebec bands.

@@Channel33RPM Jean Leloup - The Dome is a great laid back party album from '96. I also remember Les Colocs and Les Cowboys Fringants getting a lot of play at franco houseparties.

I'm really shocked to see Varga included. I actually thought about this album before starting to watch this. I saw them in the Town Pump in Vancouver, and they were excellent.

Yeah, I think Bob Rock is still Canadian enough....

Living in Metro Detroit area for the past 31 years has allowed me to listen to both commercial Canadian radio and the CBC out of Windsor. Heard a lot of Sloan, the Watchmen, the Hip (btw, I have it on good authority that cleaning the snow off your car with a hockey stick, being helped by a member of the Tragically Hip, is the most Canadian thing you can do), Big Sugar, etc...Used to be a show late night weekends on CBC by a guy named David Wisdom (it was called "Nightlines" I believe), and he played to coolest music.

Danko Jones is a great Canadian rock band that I wish more people knew about. If you like hard rock like AC/DC and Thin Lizzy, you’ll love them.

(In Loving Memory Of…) Big Wreck is one of my favorite bands, as well as Ian’s other band, Thornley. Danko Jones is great as well. Blue Rodeo.

That Sloan record is indeed good... but IMO, their best is "Twice Removed", which is the perfect transition record from their earlier indie/grunge/shoegaze sound into a more polished. "Twice Removed" has elements of both, and I'd say it's basically a perfect record. Their first LP, "Smeared" is also quite good for those that like more fuzzy indie rock stuff. Sloan rule and, as far as I'm concerned, are the best Canadian band of all time.

Paul Laine - Stick It In Your Ear is the only one that comes to mind to me that deserves a mention! The Tragically Hip and Rush both fall into the category of bands i respect I can appreciate the tellent or impact but have never loved the end result.

Never heard them, but definitely heard of Killer Dwarfs and The Tragically Hip back in the day. Sloan sounds familiar as well. I love hearing about "under-the-radar" bands. Not a Canadian band, but after hearing about this band long ago, I picked up a CD by Prong and Have really dug the first 2 songs so far. Just looking them up I found out that two of the members worked at the club CBGBs. So many bands that you never hear about anymore.

I somehow stumbled into Sloan back in the day and commenced to pick up anything by them I came across. Fun band.

I remember back when I Mother Earths album "Dig" came out. Back in 93/94 the album and one of the songs was used in a TV advertisement/infomercial here in the states.I think it was for selling CD players or something. I remember seeing the commercial over and over and thinking "who is this band?" Ended up buying the CD at some point and really digging it.

The Flashing Lights. Album “Where the Change Is”. (1999) While I’m more hard rock and metal I had a soft spot for this band which is comparable to softer Sloan material.

I'm Canadian as well, so of course I know most of these. Mostly I Mother Earth. I've listened to those two albums quite a lot. Maybe a band that is not as rock, but would fit in here is Spirit of the West. I don't think they are popular outside of Canada really? An awesome album is Go Figure. The entire album is excellent, and the production is top notch. Some tracks have an Scotish influence, since one member of the band is from Scotland. And what a treat to see them live as well! I have never seen such energy!

One can tell that Canadian content laws give a huge boost to acts that nobody would have ever heard of otherwise.

@@Channel33RPM You may just be right, but you have to admit that it makes your radio stations hard to listen to, let alone be a disc jockey there. I've often thought that a border blaster would make a fortune due to not having to deal with content regulations.

@@DriveInFreak Gonna disagree. I for one am glad that I tuned into 89x, the Alt Rock station out of Windsor, when I moved to Detroit in 1993. I heard a LOT of great music, including the Hip and Sloan that I would never hear in Kansas city or, god forbid, Alabama. there's nothing wrong with being exposed to new music.

i know most people prefer the Edwin era of I Mother Earth but I really enjoyed the Blue, Green, Orange album released in 1999 with Brian Byrne on vocals. Summertime In The Void kicks ass! I wish they would reissue that on vinyl. The Headstones are another great Canadian band that gets no vinyl love. Also the Moist album Silver was a pretty good 90's Canadian rock album.

Goddo, Santers, Coney Hatch, Zon, Prism, Street Heart, Teenage Head

and Day For Night is by far the best Hip album ;)

I missed Big House-Dollar in My Pocket, All Nite and Baby Doll are fantastic!

I bought the Sloan CD "Smeared" bc of the song "Underwhelmed". They sounded a lot like the band "Dada" who were based out of Los Angeles, CA. Check out Dada's "Puzzle" CD, it's fantastic

Big Sugar did an EP album in french. They were very popular in the province of Quebec.

@@Channel33RPM they did a french version of "Open Up Baby" for the radio in Quebec. That was very popular in the charts here. So they did a french EP called "Chauffé à Bloc" in 1999. They did a cover of a Quebec classic song called "Je Suis Cool" on that album.

Funny enough, I did have the Big Wreck album on my list. I removed it, figuring someone would argue Big Wreck weren't truly a Canadian band. Great album, BTW.

I hear "Curious" on the radio, once in a while. It's still a good tune.

IME photo for Scenery and Fish bit isn't them; rather an Edwin (vocals) side project. Love the Hip, top 3 Canadian bands of all-time with Rush and The Band, imo

@Channel33RPM I don't think you will be able too for just the music. YT has them. These guys were on 120 minutes on MTV back in the day on Sunday nights. I wanna say that was when GNR WTTJ came out around the same time. I ran out bought the album then played the crap out of it. It's dated but it still kicks butt.

I seem to recall them (Bootsauce) playing here quite a bit back in the day. I never saw them, but the name stuck with me.

FINALLY!!! Someone else who doesn't think the Hip is good. While I appreciate all the work Gord did outside of music, I couldn't stand that band.
