I love watching your videos, but I'd rather get one every six months where you loved it than regular ones where you're being worn down. Why not do Q&A's when you need a break? Literally film yourself on a couch answering our questions. Then you still get content up for the almighty algorithm, but you can also take two weeks off because you can probably do that one in a day.

I've been watching this movie when I am overwhelmed and artistically blocked since it was first released in the US, and I had 3 shitty jobs to put myself through college at the time, so some of the gen-xers are there too. My habit of this movie when I feel shitty and burnt out is now old enough to drink.

Hi, I'm crying on my lunch break at work because this is too relatable. I had the same epiphany of sorts with Kikis about two years ago because of burning out, and I'm in the middle of burning out again with my work. I had already booked myself a week off at the end of the month (this our slow period) to really take a breather of some variety, but your description of that feeling that "if I work really hard now, and get those numbers up, THEN I can relax" and it never actually happening that way has been getting me super down I will be here to watch your videos, and I'll love them even more if you're rested and taking care of yourself. I wish the algorithm and these platforms that have you create content and make tons of money off of it just to give you a piece would be more generous. You deserve incredible, good things without having to break yourself to get them. Lots of love 💜💜💜

Such a great video! Another thing I really loved is how Kiki is paid in the film. She doesn't have a set fee, instead she just kind of excepts what ever chum change people throw her way. And it's obvious that while her clientel apprieciates her, they also don't pay her that well, even though she acts like it in the film. There's this throwaway scene where Kiki sees some nice shoes, she wanna buy. But we never see her go back and get them. So she can't be making that much. As someone who has been working in the freelance writing industry for next to nothing for three years now, I'm properly projecting... But it still yet another element of this film that I love.

As a courier myself, I can relate. Especially when Kiki helps out that elderly lady around the house and is worried that she was overpaid. There've been times where I've received bonus tips without warning for being punctual and immediately felt guilty for getting more than the required value of what I was delivering.

Sabbath! That's an itch I can scratch, but if all you're doing is resting so you can be more productive, you're missing the point of Sabbath. Eugene Peterson calls that a "bastard Sabbath" (love that guy). Keep diggin' on the Sabbath thing, but hunt for more meaning than just "productivity" or "optimization". Blessings.

Of course what Sabbath means is moving from the profane work week into the spiritual realm, letting the work week person rest and put your focus and efforts on different pursuits. Either way, it helps the rest of the week, which was my point.

Patrick! You gotta take care of you. Loved your little homage footage to Kiki (like sighing on your parent's counter, and making pancakes), plus your parents are adorable and loved how they read the sponsored segment at the end! While having higher ambitions for each video is a good thing, quality vs quantity while improving is a hard balance. But when you were talking about the ever increasing runtime of your videos, I have to say that try to aim a limit for a video's runtime. Like for instance this video at 14:00 is perfect, anything that's longer than 25 minutes can be a chore for most viewers. I know it's more of an investment but have you considered maybe working with an editor? Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite Ghibli film too, plus don't worry, I also cried recently during the "fly" scene as my recent struggles resonated those of Kiki's and of yours illustrated in this video when I was introducing the film to my nieces and nephews earlier this summer. Anyway always a fan of your videos and look forward to them, take as many breaks as you need to keep your mind sharp and from being overwhelmed. All the best.

As someone who just got back from a family holiday where I spent 8+ hours every day working because I have two weeks left to finish my thesis for a 4 year PhD that left me mentally drained, exhausted and sobbing from frustration and defeat more times than I can remember, this video really resonated with me. Academic science is obviously different from creative/gig economy work in many ways, but it’s also defined by incredibly long hours, high pressure to succeed, constantly shifting goalposts for what “success” actually is, the need to work the hours required to fulfil whatever the latest goal is, no matter what toll it takes on your physical or mental health and uncertainty over income and employment if you fail to adequately meet every increasing criteria for “success” in your field. So yeah, I can definitely relate. Thanks for making this video and being open about the struggles you face despite working a job you love and chose to do.

I'm just now leaving college and trying to get myself into a life where I work mostly for myself and produce art for an audience of friends and strangers. It's what I've always wanted to do, too. Hearing you talk about this, though, especially considering you have what I want, and hearing you talk about you struggle with mental health, it brings a lot of things into perspective. I mean, I also feel shitty about myself if I'm not constantly doing things with my time. That's a big reason I want the life I want. But again, I'm very happy to have seen this video. You're one of my favorite artists on the internet, and it feels like a personal letter (or maybe a diary entry?) on how to slow down and take care of yourself.

I was anti-social and frequently unavailable but i'm glad i had friends (most of them anyways) who understood i had a goal and were patient with me. This video really spoke to me, as did Kiki's Delivery Service when i first watched it earlier this year. Kind of amazing i started watching your channel last week, then the next video you release is basically one written directly for me. I love your channel and your work. I won't just casually drop a "take a break, you've earned it" cause i know the fear involved in that, but i guess i'm commenting right now to just say "i hear you, and i understand that struggle".

Hope you get through this burnout, Patrick... left unchecked it can lead to worse health problems. I too have been suffering with similar issues for the past year and left my job in March to take a break and try and get refreshed. I'm still struggling, but working through it slowly. Best wishes!

Started crying like a minute in because this movie is so important to me and I relate so much with you here. I don't think I go a single year without watching this movie. And I completely feel you on your experiences being burnt out and finding comfort in the film. I'm a freelance composer by trade but also work various gigs to make a living. I've gone through burnout so many times in the last few years and I'm only in my 20s. But the movie is always there to....serve as this kind of reminder that something isn't wrong with me, but is something that can just happen to anyone. idk I have a lot of thoughts about it but im not sure now is a moment where I can articulate them all. Anyway, point is thanks for the fantastic video. This is the first I've seen from you but I'll definitely follow what you done from here on. That said, take your time! Good luck with everything in the future!

I, for one, am happy to see you spend an appropriate amount of time making videos you really want to make, instead of stressing and cramming to fulfill the needs of an arbitrary schedule you made to please an algorithm. Good job. It's nice to see this kind of candor from an Internet Personality; they're usually a lot more opaque than this, especially about issues of burnout.

It's sad that youtube favors creators that upload regulary, it forces creators to upload a video even if they have nothing to show or say. Maybe the algorythm should do the exact opposite. Personaly Im more liklely to watch a Video from someone I haven't seen in a while.

kiki's delivery service is such a happy and feel good movie. there are a few movies that I use as Anti-depressants (star wars, scott pilgrim, etc.) and Kiki is one of those. As a working (and studyied) musician, I can relate to a lot of your problems and I always connected with Kiki but never quite knew why. So thanks patrick willems. You explainend to me how I am a 13 year old Witch that struggles to fly. jokes aside, burnout and depression are not funny things and as soon as it affects your working schedule or private life, they need to be tackled and adressed. Artistic perfection is both a blessing and a curse, as it pushes you further to make the best art you've ever made while also prohibiting you from creating something simpler or easier or even stop creating when you're body needs some space and time out. Listen to your body and head and take as much time as you need, cause, well, you need it. Also that ad was the best ad I've ever seen.

I broke myself with work a few years back. To this day, I have not mentally recovered from it. I used to be just like you, feeling guilty if I am not working but now there are days where the thought of having to work gives me panic attacks and anxiety. I was diagnosed with PTSD caused by work. Learn to switch off because it is really hard to fix yourself if you collapse.

Oh my, your video hit home, hard and I'm so glad I found this. I can't even begin to describe how much I relate to you - and Kiki - but I will try. I'm not a youtuber, but an artist and even though I am not yet at the point where I can make a living off of my art, it's my passion, it's what I live and breathe for. But recently, during the past few weeks or months it's become such a...Chore and I've been struggling, partially because I've been having trouble concentrating. And yet I keep pushing forward, telling myself I need to "deliver" and "produce" results because it's what people expect from me. I update my social media pages on FB and IG twice a week, so I'm always dreading what happens if I don't have anything to show for...On top of it all I get so frustrated with myself - just like your videos get longer and you feel viewers expect that, my drawings get more and more elaborate. I want to draw something simple, but end up spending days working on tiny details - and for what? Because I am also chasing a goal, like you too, with your aim of publishing one video a month. I'm telling myself I need to finish my ToDo list with drawings I owe to other people, in order to have time for myself, that once I am done with that, I can focus on illustrations for my novel and things like that. I can't relax, I constantly think of work I have yet to do. I literally have to FORCE myself not to work on weekends, but every so often whenever I'm not productive enough, I will cancel my weekend to catch up. Due to all that pressure I put on myself, I haven't even had time for my other passion, writing, even though I miss it dearly. And I miss being creative, really drawing just for the fun of it, enjoying it, not just...Producing. I didn't realize until I watched your video that it might be artistic Burnout, though. I thought maybe I just lost my inspiration and convinced myself to join Inktober next month to recapture the creative flame. But maybe, once this challenge is over, I should take a step back too, and pause for a while, just like Ursula did... I dunno. In any case, I want to say thank you for your amazing video, it really opened my eyes.

Thank you for sharing this, Patrick. I too had this exact same experience with both KZread and Kiki. Early in 2018 I got burnt out trying to make this channel a full-time gig, it completely crippled my creativity and ability to work. In this time I rewatched Kiki and it taught me that you can't force it, and in time it will all return. And then I made a video about Fisherman's Horizon from Final Fantasy VIII and my KZread burnout / anxiety, and what Kiki had taught me. I'm so grateful to hear your story and how much it parallels with my own. It's nice to know you're not alone.

As a teacher man do I relate but we have “forced” breaks built into our schedule, that are so necessary. I can’t imagine having to dictate that myself, especially with my income so directly tied to it. In short, I empathize. More to the point, thank you for what you do. Your videos allow me to think, learn, but also unplug. Lately they’ve even been a big help to the Film Club I just started sponsoring, at my school. So many of those students want to learn about film and storytelling through the medium; many videos have served as great resource for that. Also, several of them want to create and they appreciate your occasional focus on the process of creating. With that in mind, I think a lot of people would be interested in just simple videos answering user submitted questions or some behind the scenes shorts. Maybe this helps, maybe it doesn’t, regardless we are still here... be that weekly, monthly, or just the occasional gem, lovingly dropped in our lap.

That describes depression and major anxiety. You described the exact symptoms I felt 10 months ago, before I got help and started working towards getting better. And the cycle of freelancing you mention is a vicious one : you don`t do the work, you miss a schedule, you stress about not delivering, you get more tired, you don`t do the work, you miss a schedule...etc! It's a vicious, vicious, cycle. It feeds itself. Seek help, get help, and do it you way Also, Joe Hisa/ishi (Sorry, my Japanese pronunciation system shorted out when you said it lol)
