I learned to make my movements "shorter" when doing the application. But you seem to do the whole movement even in application (for example moving one hand forward before pulling it back for the other hand to block). Don't you think that's slower and less practical?

it's like the militia training when they teach you jump to avoid grenades, you may feel it slow and unnesessary but actually, it's very effective and quick in real fight

Number Two would be something pertinent to Pinan/Heian Yondan.

We understand that this has nothing to do with any fighting situation, it is just practising pair choreography. is there any practical purpose for doing these exercises?

Consider it a progression between kata and open sparring. We practice bunkai when performing kata - what is the practical application of the movements in the form? Ippon Kumite is like taking them out of the kata and practicing them individually. Then progressively add resistance until you can perform the movements in a pressure situation. This should carry over into being able to apply them in open sparring.

Standing in heisoku dachi in a fight is the worst stance you can take. Why teach it to anyone?

Very low perfomance level.
