The hungry caterpillar influencing eating disorders is a huge stretch --- Caterpillars eat their weight in food up until they're ready to pupate. I'm pretty sure most children are taught about the butterfly lifecycle and like the book because of the holes leading to different colorful foods X3

The reason that the book "Don't Make Me Go Back, Mommy" was made was because it was a product of the satanic panic, which was at its height in the late 80's/90's, and the book itself was published in 1990. That doesn't make it any less weird, but historical context is important.

I managed to read “Don’t make me go back Mommy” through an archived site and that book really made me cry. It was definitely written during the Satanic Panic that happened during the 1980s.

I understand why people are upset that the kid never said thank you in the giving tree but like THATS THE WHOLE POINT???? if he said thank you then it would completely disregard the whole message of the book

To me, "The Giving Tree" was an environmentalist story, as the tree represents Earth while the ungrateful kid who mines the tree of its resources represents mankind.

The story about J. M. Barrie kind of made me tear up. The dude definitely had an innocent fascination with children that was spurred by losing his brother. He certainly earned the trust of the Davies considering the mother of the kids entrusted Barrie to take care of her children. The Davies kids also defended Barrie on the accusations of being a predator. Considering just how much they interacted with the Barrie, and was even adopted by and taken care of by him, I'm inclined to believe that the only thing inappropriate about Barrie's fascination with kids was interacting with random stranger's children (which, again, didn't lead to anything worse than being strange). I don't know if enriching the life of children helped him cope with losing his brother, but I certainly hope it brought him peace of some sort.

banning the book outright is def too far imo, but the giving tree is widely interpreted as a mother-son relationship. i can see why some people would have concern with allowing young girls to read a book they believe encourages women to be selfless givers and see this as acceptable. again, i think banning it was too far and idont think this book is a big issue or anything, but it is always important to think deeper abt the kind of ideas children are exposed to from media aimed at them, since children are very easily influenced. silverstein in his personal life spent time as a cartoonist for playboy, so i can see why his children's work would be extra scrutinized.

@@fivepainbbles little girls ---> selfless, "givers"/mothers. there's nothing wrong w being a mother obviously, that's a great noble thing to raise good children, but idk maybe they were concerned little girls would take the story to mean that they should let others (boys) have whatever they want from them and form no personal boundaries for themselves, because that's what the tree does in the story. in school, i was taught that the story was a metaphor for motherhood/parenthood. since most grade school teachers are female (idk if thats changed in recent years but thats how it was when i was a kid), that might be why the story is mostly presented as such. girls/women are more prone to people-pleasing and enabling behavior as a general rule, so while like i said i don't think the book needs to be banned or anything, i can see the reasoning behind the concern.

The point of the giving tree is showing forgiving the tree was, how ungrateful the kid was, and how he realized something ath the end of the story when he sat on the tree trunk. True, he didn't say thanks but if he said it, will it be genuine enough? Having him being thankful for what the tree gave him would made no sense since the author was trying to show kids how far the boy would go for his wishes while being impolite .BTW, the tree could have been anyone, supposedly family members, to friends, so no to gender roles.

@@MISSWORLD444 In the original story the child is not homeless but her family is poor and her dad forced her to sell plenty of matches. If she does not sell them all her dad will beat her. The child is dying because there is very cold outside and she starts burning the matches and hallucinating about a better life. And in the next morning people find her dead but smiling.

As a kid I struggled w paranoia and hallucinations, so I’ve always hated the dark themes of children’s books, I think we should start making books less terrifying while still teaching a good lesson. Idk how many other kids also felt the same way but I had so many nightmares bc of these books as well as increasing my terror lol

OMG same anything could set mine off when I was kid I still have hallucinations now but they're not as bad as they were. I was terrified of cemeteries when I was kid I had this book that had a picture of cartoonish looking gravestones in it and I had nightmares for ages my mum got rid of it. I don't have that fear anymore. One thing that did traumatize me as kid though is I don't know if you've heard of it but there's a tv show called Jonathan creek he's like this sort sherlock Holmes type character that solves murders and one episode I watched called the three gamblers I had a reoccurring hallucination after it I dreaded night time and I am 32 now and I still go through a small period of time where I dread going to bed because I remember how I used to feel. I'd also discourage any parent from telling their kids the story of the boogieman just don't do it it's far more mentally damaging then you think it might be. My wonderful grandfather decided to do that to this day I still blame that too as one of the reasons I cannot sleep properly why I still have night terrors. But here's the fudged up part for a short period I was having night terrors ever night there was no let up I'd wake up calm go back to sleep and have another for a solid week. Then one night I stayed up late and watched hell raiser with my dad it stopped them not completely but it slowed down the frequency of them. Still doesn't make sense because the material in that movie is disturbing haha lol.

Maybe just don't read those books then, I loved dark kids movies (stuff like The Never Ending Story and Labyrinth) as a kid, never actually read any dark books though.

About the “don’t make me go back there, mommy!”, the portrayal of satanists isn’t totally accurate, maybe there are different types of satanists, but I know a satanist in real life, and she is nothing like this. I was informed that the portrayal of demons her religion are much different than my religion ( catholic ).

Some of the kids from McMartin PreSchool got interviewed and told outlandish stories like that they would flush kids down toilets or fly them around in a hot air balloon, Why any adult believed any of this is beyond me. Then again this also came from the era where conservative Christians though songs were loaded with back masking and that rock, metal and dungeons and dragons were evil so the critical thinking wasn't exactly strong.

I always thought The Giving Tree was supposed to be an environmental message. A message about taking until our resources are gone.

in the topic of kids books, my fav book series growing up is goosebumps. In recent times, I was thinking about writing my own stories. Although the stories have horror, sci fi & a bit of mystery, there are thing that hold some truth to me. I have my journal & the dream sequences I wrote down can be classed as fiction. you can believe me or not but the dreams I wrote down happened & sometimes I would need to change it. I want to make it visual so the audience can see what I was going through but then the horror aspects would increase & could mean censorship.

That's not how The Giving Tree ends. He comes back as an old man and he's just like "I just want a place to sit" and the tree, being a stump, is like "you can sit on me." So he does. He still doesn't say "thanks" though. I looked it up just in case he did and I found a blog shit-post connecting their relationship to a BDSM relationship. And also some edits of the boy using the tree in... Ways that wouldn't allow him to ask for anything ever again. Because of course that's a thing.

Awesome video as always! You both did great and it was super interesting! I love Watership Down, I first read it at 12 because I read and love the Warriors series, and was kinda surprised at how dark it was lol 😆 I definitely recommend the Netflix series for Watership Down as well as the 1980s movie, and the TV kids show (the kids show is a lot less graphic/dark and follows the group on adventures and such)

Omg I was obsessed with Shel Silverstein growing up and I still have all my old copies of his books that's so cool I'm so jeaous 😂 ETA: I'm especially jealous because when I was in elementary school all the boys in my class got to go to a reading event and meet Robert Munsch, but the girls had to stay behind because...we were too good at reading alredady or some bullshit like that? So the topic of meeting iconic children's authors is definitely still a source of bitterness for me lol

I thought that the hungry caterpillar taught a good lesson because the caterpillar gets sick after eating all that food, but feels better and is able to start forming his cocoon to become a butterfly after eating a healthy leaf. I feel like people just want to find something to be angry about in everything

The Giving Tree is really about the experience of becoming a parent and just how much you give and do that your children never realize. Shel Silverstein has some weirder cartoons because he drew for Playboy as well.

You shoud look into A Promise is a Promise by Robert Munsch! The title is pretty innocent but the story is literally based on a Native American myth of this horrifying sea troll witch thing that lives under the Arctic ice and drags disobediant children down to their deaths...it's a source of childhood trauma for me and every other person I know who read it 😂

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is my favourite childhood book, I've always loved caterpillars and butterflies because of that book. Really loving your channel, am so glad I found it!

When he pointed out the authors face I started remembering having nightmares of that face I always thought he was gonna tape me up and burn me alive yeah I had a dream similar to that where an elderly couple taped not me a baby and burned it alive it traumatized me

Ah yes the giving tree. Yeah the picture of Silverstein on the back terrified me as a kid

i really like the giving tree and i dont think there's really supposed to be like a lesson, it's a representation of how much parental figures give up. many times they don't get a thank you, similarly to the tree. this perspective allows you to appreciate how much others do for you.

The giving tree - Please don't hate the book It's just about a tree who give a her all to the boy and treats him like he is her son The hungry caterpillar - The caterpillar eats to grow into a butterfly. I don't see any disorder here. Those two books are NOT disturbing at all.

Also don't know at all if anyone other than people in my town maybe heard of this book but it's called Wenny as her Wings by Janet Lee Carey, basically this brother misses his little sister who died and the book is through his perspective, like how he can't get over his little sister not being there with him anymore. It's super sad, made me cry each time I read in in junior high If anyone else heard of this please let me know cause no one else I know (family wise and some I went to school with) never even heard of this book

for part 2: another book that's for kids that's quite screwed up is "Suur Toll"/"Tyll the great" an estonian fairytale book about a giant who is a fair giant, and he helps his people when vanatuhi/vaapagan attacks, the illustrations are unnerving, and there are dark moments in the story where suur toll's wife; "Piret" gets crushed by their own house after Vanatuhi collapses it on her, and a part where suur toll gets decapitated, and before dying he kills the thing that decapitated him by crushing it, before carrying his severed head somewhere and turning to stone, an animated version of it is actually on youtube

I thought ppl would have hated the book cuz of the shel silverstein jumpscare

I actually disagree about the hate on The Giving Tree. The boy was written selfish because he IS selfish. Everything isn't perfect and happy and "just" all the time, and that is what I like about it. He never said Thank You because he tool the tree's unconditional love for granted. If he said Thank You it would not do anything to teach about when things are unfair and unhappy. Then people will think that, of themselves or others - and not only this - going through things are "abnormal" when it is perfectly normal to not be okay, and is unfortunately normal for selfish people to exist. I actually write stories, and in mine they are usually based on things I've suffered like multiple forms of abuse and the aftermath , and mental illnesses, and are usually extremely graphic. Nearly all of my stories have bittersweet, sad or painful endings, or a combination of those, with characters not reacting to situations "right" because they don't fully understand the situation, just like people in our world. If I forced a happy ending with justice are suddenly make everyone fully understand subjects like abuse and act the way you're "supposed" to act, it wouldn't be "real life" to me, because not everything is like that (hate the term "real life" because I believe characters exist in parallel worlds (schizophrenia thing). But yes, that's all. No hate towards you, of course. Just a simple disagreement.

not backstory so much as content but there's one kids book that my class read in fifth or sixth grade called A Day No Pigs Would Die that has some pretty disturbing stuff in it. we read other books like The Outsiders and Hatchet that also had darker themes than most kids books but there was stuff in that one that would 100% keep it from being chosen as required reading these days, if it was even allowed in the school library at all

I thought we were _meant_ to be annoyed with the boy/man for being entitled and not thanking the The Giving Tree. It annoyed me as a kid which is the whole reason I understood the lesson of the book was that if I didn’t have & express appreciation to the people who provided for me & looked out for me then I’d turn out as bad as that brat and end up hurting the ones I loved.

Here's a story at the library my teacher read when I was little. I forget the name of it though. Well, the story I think starts with a mom bunny and a teen bunny and a baby bunny. The mom says to teen bunny be nice to your sister. He doesn't be nice while panting eggs. His mom says please be nice. Again hes not nice. Then the mom says ill put you in time out! He is still not nice to baby bunny. The mom does notice. The baby bunny cries and goes away. She finds a little butterfly. Baby bunny follows it to a place long away from the house. Teen bunny remembers that his sister is gone he tells mom bunny that she left. Mom bunny starts a hole search around the neighborhood. Baby bunny gets lost. A fox is hiding the grass but doesn't see baby bunny. The search went on till night. The other moms and teen bunny and Mom bunny finally finds her. The fox didn't get a dinner. The bunny never go out again. The story ends.

Wouldn't say "kids book". But the comic book "yummy: story of a Southside shorty". Its Really sad because almost everything in the book is real except for the 2nd protagonist roger, rogers brother, and a few other characters. May yummy rest in peace.

These weren't as creepy as i was expecting, just a bit sad.

In 1st grade, our teacher read us the giving tree then tried to show us a youtube video about it. The video wasn't the proper one and it had cursing and the boy cutting down the tree while the tree bleed to death. we were all shocked and the teacher was embarrassed.
