Kia Niro EV - Hitch Installation!

Curt Class III Hitch Installation on a 2019 Kia Niro EV.
Yes, you may be able to re-use the undertray, but involves cutting a lot of material. We preferred to keep it intact in case we ever remove the hitch.

The electrical coupling for what? The trailer plug? We used a T-harness from etrailer.com, and just wired power from the 12V battery with it. It was fairly straightforward

I had been holding out for an EV that could tow my 2500# camper (box trailer conversion, so has the height issue your race car does not). I ended up buying the Niro with no intention of towing, but your vid is convincing. My question is, do you think the added height will seriously decrease range? We are currently pulling the camper with a 2017 Sedona, and the gas consumption is killing us on long trips!

  • @ECOBRAP

I wouldn't be surprised if a box trailer larger than the car itself would easily cut range in half, even at reasonable speeds... I think our tests were successful due to the low profile nature of whatever we are towing. For reference I now tow a teardrop trailer and get about a 180 mile range.

  • @cstrimel

    @cstrimel

    2 жыл бұрын

@@ECOBRAP Thanks! That is helpful to hear about the teardrop. I don't think it will be practical to pull my 14" box on a long trip, but I am still thinking that just being able to take it to our nearby go-to campground (and the box store for lumber) will be totally rad :). I also want to add the hitch for a bike rack. I will have to make a video if I end up towing the camper. By the way, I have the Air Lift 1000s on my Sedona, and they have definitely helped. For anyone that goes that route, they are do lose air pressure, so I just bring a bike pump on trips and top off the air every time I fill up the tank.

The Niro EV has a 1060 pound load capacity but you still added air springs to your Niro EV. Even with the tongue weight of the trailer you should have had plenty of load capacity. Why did you add the air springs, do you expect to exceed the 1060 pound rating? Also, can you post the manufacturer and model number of the air springs you installed?

Hi Daniel, Great questions. I will be releasing a video of the airbag install soon, just wanted to make sure they worked before posting the video. I am the guinea pig, and I had to guess on sizing. I used Airlift PN 60-901, but in my video I will explain that 60-902 might be a better fit, but could be a PITA to install. As for why I installed them in the first place, remember that airbags do not change the GVWR, GAWR, Tire Capacity, etc, so you still have to stay below those limits. I installed them to reduce suspension squat, and help the suspension stay in its optimal travel range without bottoming out. So it was mostly a stability thing. That being said, the Niro did not squat more than 1.5 inches fully loaded at the back with no airbags. After install, the squat is now a little less than one inch. Did it help? Hard to tell, but I believe it did, and I didn't want to do too much testing without the airbags. I can try a deflated run at some point. As for the 1060lb load capacity, that sounds about right. But for some reason, on my US model, the tire sticker inside the door shows a load capacity of 849lbs. Why it is rated so low compared to what the GVWR, GAWR, and Tire Capacities are (which would indicate over 1000lbs), I don't know. But for liability reasons, I am staying under all door sticker limits.

I welded up the rear (receiver end) end side bolts and redrilled a 9/16” hole in the correct location. Next I slotted the forward (non receiver end) holes 1/8” further towards the rear) finally I drilled 3/8” clearance holes for the threaded stud that protrudes down from the frame rail.

Hi Vincent, from the research that I have done, unless they can prove the hitch (bike rack, towing, etc) caused the warranty issue, they can not legally void your warranty, and I would fight them on it. In my case, because I am towing, and documenting it online (LOL), I might have a hard time with it. Either way, the car is fantastic, currently have 8500 miles on it in less than 6 months. Will do a 10,000 mile review in a month or two!

Hi, Now that you have had this hitch installed for awhile, can you tell what the range/efficiency difference you have for normal driving without a trailer? Just curious about the added drag of the hutch and removal of the under panel. I have the same vehicle and also live and commute in the Bay Area. Without these mods I am averaging 4 miles per kw. Thanks - Mike

  • @ECOBRAP

Hi Mike, We have not noticed a tangible difference in efficiency. Our efficiency went down to about 3.6-3.7 mi/kwh recently, but we believe that is because of the winter temperatures, and driving at higher speeds. If I drive sensibly, I can still get 4 mi/kwh (with no heat/AC) with no issues. Obviously, the faster you drive, the more of a difference you may notice with the drag changes at the back of the vehicle.

I’d like to put a hitch on just for a bike rack or small trailer for a lumber or dump run. I appreciate your feedback and your videos. Thank you

Hi Jonathan, are you saying that the hitch doesn't want to slide past the frame rails so that you can get it in position, and start measuring things? Ours was definitely a little snug, but nothing crazy. If yours is significantly getting held up, you could always try a little bit of grease on the lower corner of the frame rail to help it slide past.

Hi! I have a Kia Eniro MY21 LR in which in Spain, by regulation, we only have the possibility of carrying a 300 Kg (approx 900 pounds) trailer. Watching your videos I am amazed that the Eniro in the USA can carry 1500 Kg (4500 pounds) without problems You make me very jealous, here we can only take small trailers or a simple tent trailer. In the USA do you have the equivalent of a technical sheet with the technical characteristics where it indicates the maximum towing weight? I would like to compare it with the one we have in Europe to see why in Spain 300 Kg and in the USA you do not have this restriction

  • @ECOBRAP

In the US, the Niro EV is not "rated" to tow ANYTHING, but it is not illegal for us to tow with it anyways. In my personal opinion, I wish the eNiro had at least 1200kg/2700lb capacity worldwide! I am now frequently towing my 1100lb teardrop camper, and I barely feel it back there. Also remember KG to lbs is 2.2 : 1, so 1500kg is 3300lbs. I definitely wouldn't try 4500lbs!

@@ECOBRAP Hello! In Spain (I think that in the rest of Europe too) the MY19 model like yours does not have the possibility of towing, and it is illegal to put the hitch, except for what is known as DCP (Dispositivo de Carga Puntal or Device of load point) that allows to be able to carry load vertical up to 100 Kg, I know of colleagues who have put it and it has cost them more than 200 euros just the technical study to homologate it It is curious that the same car depending on the country may or may not carry charging, in the case of the Kia ENiro it seems that the regulations of the USA are more lax and you can make modifications and changes that here would require a technical project, an inspection of the technical inspection of vehicles (ITV in Spain) and that costs a lot of money. You make me envy that you can take a teardrop trailer, I have been looking at European manufacturers and they all have a maximum authorized weight of 500 Kg minimum, with my 300 Kg I am very limited, it makes me very angry!
