I served there from 1967 to 1971 when it was an active SAC base. I was Chief of Administration for the 410th Bomb Wing.

I was only 8-10 years old at the time, but we were there during the same period.

My dad was stationed there during that time. He worked in base housing supply. I just started 1st grade at McDonald elementary. Memories come flooding back to the trucks spraying DDT while we played outside. I can almost smell it now.

I lived on K. I. Sawyer AFB at 114 Crusader Street in 1968-70. There were record snows each year. No salt was put on the roads at it would blow onto the air field and rust the B-52 bombers, and the 101 Voodoos. I attended K.I. Sawyer Elementary during the 4th grade, then bused to Gwinn for the 5th grade. I still remember the sonic booms! The summers were pleasant accept for the Horse flies, and Buffalo knats. There was at least one swam per head. Winters were unbelievable. Coming for the South, I had never witnessed such deep snow that didn't completely melt until late May, or early June. My father was a career Medic in the Air Force, and worked at the hospital. To the residents at the time, this place was nicknamed K.I. Siberia!

When my family first arrived at 114 Crusader Street K. I. Sawyer, Michigan it was the summer of 1968. I was 8 years old. Behind our house was nothing, but a pine forest. In this forest, there grew small bushes with these little blue berries on them. Coming from the South, I had never seen them before; although, wild blackberries were common where I came from. So, I pick one, and ate it. It was good, so I ate several more. I showed them to my mother, whom inquired did I eat any of them. I told her yes. Oh, hell broke loose then! She made me drink warm salty water to induce vomitting! THEN, she asked a neighbor about them, only to find out that they were just wild blueberries! I miss the taste of then today, especially frozen blueberries with sugar sprinkled on top.

@@markbarnes988 Your post brought back memories. I may have been there when you were. I was a kid then. We lived at 134 Fury St. My brother and I would go into the forest as well and eat those wild blueberries! Those were the days. No fences then. There was a pond of some sort that would freeze during the winter not far from the house and we would ice skate on it. Yes, tons of snow!

Summer lasted one day and I remember those awful flies. We lived there from 70-72, over 200 inches of snow a winter…I cried everyday, homesick, lonely, poor etc.

I lived there from73 to 74. Went to 4th grade there. I could not believe the snow we got. Our back yard had a big hill behind it and that’s were I spent everyday there with my trusty sled. Our dog got out in the spring and got sprayed by a skunk. 😅 I’ll never forget that smell. Tomato juice and skunk.

at least they have tore down most of those abandoned buildings.. but they still need to address those abandoned garages filled to the brim with trash, no wonder skunks are all but domesticated out there.

I lived on Herculese and Albatross. I lived in the nicer part of town but I still saw stuff. I'd say the worst streets were commando, Jupiter and mustang. I remember drug busts and stuff. Lots of pills and meth around there. Also there are absolute shitloads of sex offenders and pedos in that town. Lived there from 2011 to 2018.

Carol, Miles, Absolutely right by about 1000 percent. I know there is no sense arguing with people, but closing that base, and many more like it, was a colossal failure and mistake. In 2020, with a global pandemic upon, all of us, does anybody think that we might need to have a strong military with plenty of bases. I certainly hope so.They could have moved, all the bombers and kept it open. Very short sighted thinking. No extra hospitals around, that's for sure.
