🇰🇭 🇻🇳Khmer Rouge leaders convicted for genocide in Cambodia | Al Jazeera English

They murdered, enslaved, and tortured their fellow citizens in Cambodia and Vietnam during the 1970s, but now, two top officials of the Khmer Rouge have also been found guilty of genocide.
A UN-backed tribunal has delivered a historic judgement against two of Pol Pot's deputies Nuon Chea, and Khieu Samphan, sentencing both to life in prison.
Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen, himself a mid-level Khmer Rouge official before defecting, has said that no more suspects should be prosecuted. There are cases against four more officials pending, but it has taken the tribunal 12 years and $300 million to convict three people and it is unclear if the remaining cases will move forward.
Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi reports from Phnom Penh where questions are being raised about the price and breadth of justice.

How would you feel if at the end of your life, you were finally being held accountable? I imagine that would probably be tough for them to go through, which is exactly the least they deserved.

This reminds me of the trials at Nuremberg. Then, Hitler and two or three of his top associates were missing because they committed suicide. Here, the man himself, Pol Pot, is missing because he died peacefully at his home while under house arrest. I never thought I’d be wishing that he lived longer, but now I am, so that he could’ve been tried here and convicted.

they burned the western prisoners alive. one was from new zealand, who unfortunately, sailed off course when he ran into the storm and landed on the cambodia's coast. so unlucky of him since he was sent to s-21.

I feel the death penalty is appropriate in the following situations: Serial murder, pedophilia, deadly terrorism (with overwhelming evidence of guilt). If you butcher innocent people and commit monstrous attacks on children, you have no sympathy from me.

you know why Pol Pot isn't as famously evil as Adolf Hitler? Partly because people mostly tend to lean towards the western European countries. Asian countries are secretive with their own languages and that's why most of these people get away.

I'm sorry, but doesn't Cambodia have courts? Why do foreigners need to convict them? Amazing how the eastern European torturers have never been brought to justice. What are the odds that these guys would be acquitted? Would these foreigners ever say "I'm so sorry guys, we made a mistake!" This court is a joke and has no jurisdiction over Cambodia.
