2 years ago when I saw this video, I was like "omg! How is it possible to sing lower Sa! I wish I had that ability......and today when I was watching it, I was singing lower Dha from this pitch.... It took only 2.5 months for me to achieve almost 1.5 octave in kharaj, but it took mor than 2 years to understand the priceless words and suggestions what you have given in short .. Excellent description about Riyaz. Sir, I just would like to ask that whether Taanpura loop track of a particular scale rather than physical one, is okay to be practised on ? And is doing riyaz by using taanpura better than harmonium ? Thanks !

Tejinderji, even though electronic or looped Taanpura is not at all a substitute for the physical Taanpura, a lot of people do not have an Indian music shop around them and ordering from online might be risky. So, if you are to practice with an electronic Taanpura, try getting the apps: either iTanpura or Bheema Tanpura. And, on the point about practicing with Harmonium, the shruti of a Harmonium is actually slightly higher than that of a perfectly tuned Taanpura, so it is better to practice with a Taanpura, otherwise, your voice would be trained to the tune of a Harmonium which is 'out of tune.' Hope this answers your question! :)

Tejinder Teji original tanpura is best, electronic tanpura is better, harmonium is good only to identify the note/s If you really wish to have a genuine voice production skills to be mastered, please opt for original tanpura

Hi Nishant sir.. Please post how to practice Akaar.. Infact it gets so hard when the tempo increases, Could you advise me the riyaz, because when I do practice akaar in fast tempo, I can easily sing aarohan, but avarohan is little more difficult.. Guru ji kharaj ke riaz karne k baad.. Kya hume beech k notes kar sakte hai?

Sir somehow I 've lost the Bass in my voice..For quite a few months, I've been trying to regain it by Kharaj riyaaz.The problem is earlier my voice used to be hoarse and rough in the early mornings and therefore I used to attain the Bass easily by practising lower notes. But now in the early mornings my voice lacks the hoarsness and hence the Bass . Please advise me on this.

Reshma P.T. With due apologies for replying late, don’t stay concerned with base in your voice at all. Try for an effortless rendition on all notes rather and you shall certainly notice gaining vocal strength with passage of time. Forced vocal base is futile as it vanishes soon. Having said this, there are several other factors affecting voice including environmental and social in particular. Stay cool and relaxed as it is the key for a beautiful voice. Try it out.

Sir...Plss tell us how to get akaars in one's voice.

One question please about the best time of day for this practise to be most effective. You say morning is good but does it need to be before sunrise as I have heard some say or just as early in the day as possible? Thank you.

As it goes, sooner the better, same implies here. However, sleep deprived Riyaz may prove futile. It would therefore be best to have a sound sleep, till whenever, to attain a well balanced slower metabolic rate in the morning for achieving the best results. Please note that this advice of mine here particularly centres around the practice of ‘Kharaj’ whereas any time given to your Riyaz is suitable during the day. Of course Morning Riyaz always reign supreme. Thank you.

Hello Sir. Good day. My usual pitch is D as you mentioned. I am able to reach Mandhra Sa and even Ni further. Again, this took 1 to 1.5 years for me. But still I am struggling to reach Upper Sthayi noted, where I am struggling hold even Ga in the upper octave. The bow and arrow technique is not working for me. Can you please assist. Na to aap airy voice ke sath riyaz karen na hee force karen. jahan tak bhi aap comfortably pahunch saken, wahin tak jayen. Apne aap hee mandra ke swar lagne lagenge. Ho sakta hai ke isme kuchh din lag jayen, lekin force nahin karna hai.

Yes morning is the ideal time! Once you're comfortable with Sa, proceed to Ni. Then after perfecting Ni for few days, proceed to Dha. And then, after perfecting Dha, move to Pa. No need to rush. It'll take some days or even months. Enjoy the process :) P.S : I'm a student of Nishant sir and also a beginner!

Hemantji means long-note practice. Hold Sa for as long as you can in one breath without wavering. This is practicing Sa. Hope that helps. :)
