It is believed the Variags of Khand may have been based on the real world inland Scandinavian vikings, the Varangians, who wrecked havoc in Eastern Europe during the 8th and 9th centuries. Khand provided Sauron’s armies with horses and helped carry out an attack on Gondor one thousand years before the War of the Ring.

Very well could be, the discussions I’ve seen have been about the inland Vikings I mentioned but definitely the name Khand illicit comparisons to Genghis KHAN and the Mongols
