    Nice board... price would be OK, but on the order page: "Edge2 ARM PC is available for Pre-order. Item(s) will be shipped on or before 20th Dec." So, thanks to your channel: 1 - I will not buy anything today, as this card is so much better than what is available now 2 - By the end of the year, you will certainly have reviewed even better SBC, albeit not available: GOTO 1. 😄

    This slim SBC with USB Type C ports is in the right direction for a portable [ display + SBC ] setup with an SBC pluggable and detachable at the rear of the display for outside use. Now that there is no Ethernet port on the SBC, it would be really useful to test USB type C hubs (bandwidth, power consumption, hub size, nb of ports, type of ports, ..) and check simultaneous downloads over Ethernet + other protocols (file copy to M.2, etc..). Some of these hubs are terrible at handling high-speed transfer for simultaneous communications, and some work fine.

    I like the low profile of the board. It would make it easier to use in projects like tablets and laptops. The Raspberry Pi CM4 is also very slim but it can't be used by itself.

    At first I thought there wasn't any GPIO but after going over the website I see that it is on a breakout cable that connects to the ports next to the back-side CSI connectors... which you only get with the 'maker kit' - this is also how you connect an SD card. on that i/o breakout- the website is is a bit confusing about this, but it's not too hard, you just have to read every bit of text to figure it out.... also, you only get this i/o breakout if you get the 'maker kit' , the other version comes with a case and no breakout because they say it will be blocked by the case..... well I think they should include this breakout stuff anyway because it costs more and you lose SO MUCH functionality with out any access to GPIO and ease of transferring with the sd card without having to unplug usb ports.... and it's a bit expensive for me to use in a maker sense anyway... but then again it is SUPER POWERFUL, so it could be useful for creating more complex a.i. needed 'stuff' (robots, etc) I don't think it would be a bad purchase if you need more power, or even a simple computer for everyday use... I like it a lot... I just dont need it right now :)

    Could you test 1080 60fps ? Most sbc now days can do 1080 30fps in linux. For daily driver situations some youtube videos are only in 1080 60fps so I am curious if I would be able to use linux for everthing. The 60fps in linux is the only thing no other reviewers show.

    I'm always looking out for new high-powered ARM SBC's that would be suitable for more CPU/GPU/IO-intensive applications than the Pi. However, I note that higher-end products start to butt up against the baseline M1 Mac Mini price-wise (especially in US pricing because heavy discounts on some Apple products seems to be available), but don't get close to the performance - often resulting in the Mac being the overall better value proposition. This reinforces my conviction that the M1 Mac represents superb value when it comes to the balance between price/performance/power consumption despite it being a 'premium' product. Obviously, it's bigger physically than most cased SBCs, but it's still a lot less intrusive than a conventional PC. It fits many people's definition of low-cost, and in terms of 'bang for your buck' it's probably peerless.

  • @leepspvideo

    @@leepspvideo According to MacRumours, discounts of up to $130 for the baseline model can be found (i.e. prices from $569). AppleInsider reports current discounts of up to $110 (i.e. price $589). Yes, that's still more expensive than most SBCs (even including case, PSU, SSD, etc) but high-spec SBCs are multi-hundred dollars, and getting towards the region of a Mac Mini, which at ~$500 still qualifies as low cost computing. In the case of the SBC you're reviewing in this video, the 'pro' version is priced at $329, which will rise to $369 next month. At that price point I'd be seriously considering going the whole hog and spending an extra $200 to move to M1 architecture, with the blazing performance that brings.

    I think the reason Fortnite was kicking you was because you were using a controller. For the Android build they consider that cheating because most use touch screen controls, which for FPS games are awful. I'd bet if you used it in the tablet format you could get a full play in.

    Once again, if I have $200 to spend, am I going to get one of these or a refurbished laptop with a quad core Core-i series CPU in it that also has all of the peripherals like keyboard, screen and storage already included with it? The comments here always seem to focus on "how well does it game", yet there are always better devices for gaming at this kind of price level anyway. If you're doing AI computing at the Edge and IoT then there's always a case for as much CPU power as possible in a small device - but devices like these are not aimed at the same audience as the Pi is. It's always good having a review of these devices and knowing what is new on the market - but I always end up with a big "meh", usually about the time I find out what the price is.

    I've been looking for a comparison video that actually shows all these SBCs together as looking for an alternative to my recent Pi 4B 8gb and as much as the the RK3588 looks impressive I see it lacks the OS support that you get from the Pi community. Ideally I'd love a CM4 yet they're near unobtanium or expensive from Chinese sellers. Saying that its great to see the likes of Mekotronics producing affordable boards, although I prefer the smaller sized Khadas boards with a preference for the Edge 2 as better emulation potential?! Here's hoping you manage to get a Radxa ROCK5 Model B to tryout once they release or a Firefly RK3588 version as I hear good things about their ITX-3588J board but its quite pricey...? Great work by the way!

  • @bskull3232

    @bskull3232

    Don't buy the Edge 2. If you want a CM4 replacement, go for a Radxa CM5 (to be released soon), which has the same RK3588S, running the same validated software suite currently runs on Rock 5, and is of the same size of CM4. If you want something in a nice box ready for use, go for an R6S. Edge 2 looks nice on paper, but the board certainly is either designed to be a small computer (which its GPU is not powerful enough, though its CPU is really cool), or to be embedded in a system (which it lacks mechanical connections to be fixed onto anything), or to be a desktop embedded development board (which its GPIO connectors are horrendously prohibitive to be used in this scenario), so it tried to satisfy both markets, but really satisfied none. Reference: a not very satisfied Edge 2 user.

  • @srvuk
    @srvuk Жыл бұрын

    It is likely from all that we have seen from RK3588 devices so far that Android is where there is most overall benefit right now, in particular hardware accelerated video playback, which, as history shows us, is almost never going to generate the manufacturer drivers for open source use to enable that maximum GPU performance in Linux etc Lack of Ethernet is a downer for me and no onboard support for NVME significantly decreases the value, especially at the prices being charged, even early bird. The Rock 5B seems to combine the features and price that will likely attract the greatest interest, even though it is still a few weeks away from consumer sales. We will of course have to wait for reviews to assess its full value. The Edge2 is another example of how the RK3588 is a quantum leap forward in terms of the Rockchip/AMLogic/Allwinner battles at there end of the market but the overall package of the Edge2 in comparison with its actual price means that I would not give it serious consideration. The optional Edge2 Active Cooling Kit seems to be an almost required purchase, adding to the cost, but there is no mention of price of purchase availability. What really stood out from the review was what happened when it was connected to the RasPad and even the tiny demonstration of its use showed a flowing and fast operation, which bolds well for use in tablets and especially add to the burgeoning gaming handheld market.

    I'm wondering how many of these SBCs are being used for play games. My interest in them is business-related. Is there any way that you could find a way to add a test for business capabilities? I appreciate that there aren't any standardised tests for business functionality, but I think it would be useful to create a standard test of your own which you could then use as a comparison table for all the SBCs. Most of us know what the Pi is capable of, so having something to compare to the Pi could be useful.

    @@leepspvideo I bought a second board, which arrived today. That board booted to OOWOW out of the box and seemed to install android fine, so the first board is definitely DOA. I am having difficulties with the touchscreen now on the second board, which works well on a raspberry pi running android. It is a Dell P2418HT. I am starting to think that the Edge2 was not quite ready to be out of beta.

    Overclock the CPU within PPSSPP to get 60fps in Outrun 2006. Without doing that, it doesn't matter if you're running at native resolution or up scaled to 4K, it still drops to 30fps. The game by design is too demanding for the CPU in the PSP so that's how it runs too on real hardware. As PPSSPP has a CPU overclocking feature,you can make this go away. One day I'll see a YTer remember this lol

    Does this definitely work that way with emulation? The Dreamcast version of Dave Mirra bmx runs too fast on a Pi 4. you can tell by how quick the timer runs. Imagine outrun at double speed! I already crash too much as it is

    To be fair, I've seen 8GB Raspberry Pi's asking the same kind of prices on Amazon at the moment - but $199 for such a board is still far too expensive.

    You need a more appropriate comparison: RK3588S has a cpu mark of 5,998 which is the same as an AMD FX-8350.... Considering it has a motherboard, 8g ram, basic storage, an igpu and wifi -- let alone the little power consumption, I would not say it its far too expensive for $200. However, Ryzen 3 PRO 2200GE has around the same cpu mark, and around twice better igpu (for $100, the chip alone, you would still need to add mobo, ram, storage and wifi) (PS. Pro version with 16 gb ram and larger rom for 299 is far too expensive indeed)

    I clarified that the Pi 4 has been out the longest but it’s got incredible support. I was pointing out how powerful the Khadas is considering the size. The Pi 5 is very unlikely to match this SBC for power as it’s aimed at a lower price point. However the Pi 5 will have unrivalled community support. Still it’s great to have the power if it’s available.
