"He told me when he was watching the interviews over the course of the week, he saw that Justin said he would never tap," Cormier said. "Justin would never tap. So when he was going to the submission, he said it was his dad's favorite position, into the mounted position going into the armbar, going into the triangle, he said it was his father's favorite submission. So when he got there, he was going to do the armbar. But he had heard Justin say all week that he would never tap and he didn't want to hurt him in front of his parents. So he went to the triangle and just kind of put him to sleep.
I promise you. He actually told me that. Where he goes, 'I didn't want to hurt him in front of his parents, so I said I'm going to put him in the triangle. If he goes to sleep, he goes to sleep, you wake up, you're fine.' That's exactly what he told me. He didn't want to hurt Justin in front of his parents."
In the past, Nurmagomedov had only won four fights via triangle choke during his time in Russia, including his first MMA fight in 2008. Nurmagomedov has certainly choked out his opponents before as he used a rear-naked choke to submit Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in his most recent fight prior to taking on Gaethje
Nurmagomedov goes down as one of the biggest legends that the sport has ever seen. With this time of respect that Nurmagomedov showed to Gaethje, it could make fans appreciate him even more.

Sometimes we hear stories that are clearly just exaggerated tales for ego boosts, but you can tell easily that the stories about Khabib and the way the fights play out are completely legit. Like in this instance it's completely plausible. You see Khabib not really going hard with the strikes in Round 1. And then when he gets Gaethje on the ground, there was no pounding. Just trying to get the submission clean. Could've easily turned a armbar and made Gaethje bite his own tongue. But Khabib thinks differently. The fact about the parents is really moving. He may not be the most entertaining character in the UFC like a McGregor, Ferguson or Masvidal but he certainly is the best fighter. And he is a good ambassador for mixed martial arts and wrestling.

I read some saying this isn't true bcz he went for armbar at the end of Rd 1. But be realistic, it's world championship match, if Khabib can finish with armbar then he will go for it. However in 2nd Rd, he had 2 options, when I was watching I did think that he will go for armbar again as in Rd1, but he went for triangle from Mount, which was difficult submission at that moment so I was a little surprised. Khabib definitely had both options open and we went for merciful one.

@@jake.cee12 Man out all the dagestani fighters he has one special ability that is to know exactly where and what the opponent is doing inorder to navigate to the next move or course of action like he has different perspective like a 3rd person view or birds eye view of the match (or eagles eye lmao) while inside the cage .... Thats why he can coach someone at the corner so well.... The Dagestani fighters used to call having khabib at there corner like cheating and we did see Islam struggling without khabib and while islam was constantly getting in good positions it felt like he couldnt guide/navigate himself into a better position or didnt know the next move. It felt like there were positions in the Islam vs Volk match where Khabib wouldve shouted exactly what to do next.

Because as u said it was in the moment, he had the option and he chose the merciful one. he would've gone for arm bar in the first round if he got it since he had no other option to finish him then. Also a proof he didn't want to hurt him that there was no ground and pound like he did to others, he was just hunting for submission from the get go
