KGB: Unmasking Cold War Espionage and Intrigue | The Sword and the Shield Ep.2
Ойын-сауық
At the beginning of the Cold War in 1940, the KGB leaked classified information about an American project to build a superweapon that could disrupt the global military balance.
Despite America's successful detonation of the first atomic bomb, Stalin remained unfazed due to the intelligence provided by KGB spies, enabling the Soviet Union to rapidly develop their own nuclear arsenal by reverse-engineering acquired materials.Post-war, the Soviet Union expedited its nuclear program, eventually revealing their possession of an atomic bomb on August 29, 1949. This revelation left the world astonished, fueling debates on the relative contributions of scientists and spies. It was concluded that a close collaboration between Soviet spies and scientists had been instrumental in achieving this feat, further intensifying the Cold War.
Stalin's primary objective during this era was to instill fear and establish the Soviet Union as a formidable superpower, allowing him to prioritize infrastructure and living standards. The success of Operation Enormous, executed by strategically positioned agents, transformed the Soviet Union into a major global player, solidifying the Cold War's dynamics.
Following Stalin's death in 1953, Lavrentiy Beria, a key figure in the intelligence service's transformation, anticipated assuming leadership. However, Nikita Khrushchev, another influential party official, outmaneuvered him, resulting in the imprisonment and persecution of political opponents. The KGB continued to play a pivotal role in maintaining Khrushchev's authority and suppressing dissent.
In 1954, influenced by the deaths of Stalin and Beria and the promise of reform under Khrushchev, inmates began demanding their fundamental rights. Khrushchev, informed through KGB intelligence channels about America's covert deployment of nuclear weapons in Europe, responded with counter-threats in America's own sphere of influence. During this crisis, the KGB's vital intelligence facilitated understanding and communication between Khrushchev and Kennedy, shaping the course of the Cold War.

As an American, I can’t condemn Krushev for deploying weapons to Cuba because we had them in Turkey. It’s funny how history makes it seem like the Soviets and not the Americans were the aggressor. I love my country but understand why the Soviets did what they did

KGB never served the country, they served themselves

True. And eventually they took over the country, destroyed the party and put their main in position of President.
Thankfully in the 60’s, the US had 2 Presidents who thought calmly and did NOT want ANY nuclear war. In the Cuban Missile Crisis, the head of the Military, War Hawk, Curtis LeMay encouraged Kennedy to Nuke Cuba and maybe the Soviets. Luckily Kennedy wasn’t about to do that. Just a few years later, LeMay told Johnson to Nuke North Vietnam! That time LeMay was dismissed-Thank God! I was 13 and living near a Missile base during the Cuban Crisis. We were sure the Russians were going to bomb the base any day. We were all terrified as no 13 year olds ever should be.
@gregpaul882

That’s LeMay’s job though. You want generals who will do anything to win wars. It’s the presidents job to moderate that and consider political realities. Don’t confuse soldiers and political activists.
@annehersey9895

@@gregpaul882 You have a point of course-that’s why the US doesn’t have a lot of Presidents who were career military. But LeMays answer to everything was NUKE EM! That’s what started the firing of Mac Arthur by Truman. Mac wanted to bomb North Korea and maybe China n Truman said NO! THEN Mac started badmouthing Truman publicly so he gave Truman no choice.

Because he was a GRU officer and this documentary pertains to the KGB. GRU being independent of the other soviet intelligence beaurocracies. And GRU (1917 - 1992), military intelligence geared towards foreign threats, did not involve itself in internal security of the Soviet bloc.
