Keyboard surgery on faulty Apple keyboards without opening them up!

In this video I start off with a keyboard I thought was faulty, and we go over some past repairs I've done where I rescued dead or faulty keyboards.
The video is focused on Apple repairs, but the same methods will work on any membrane keyboard.
Buy a used Apple keyboard:
eBay: ebay.us/2TJ23E
eBay Australia: ebay.us/V9cw9Z
Buy B7000 glue. If you buy bulk, keep it in the fridge and it will last longer!
eBay: ebay.us/BZitYz
eBay Australia: ebay.us/bzMEfO
AliExpress: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AfSMNh
I've ordered a scalpel tool, should be easier than hard back razorblades.

A THOUSAND thanks for showing how to replace the blasted silicone buttons! It looks much easier than I thought it would be. Otherwise the keyboard is worthless. Cleaned the well where the key sits with alcohol and a brush and the top of button just flew off. Undoubtedly fatigued from being pressed a zillion times in its 13 years of life and use. UGH. Now to find a replacement button from a donor keyboard somewhere... Are the buttons the same on A1315 and A1255 keyboards (different buttons for larger keys of course but for the main keys)?? THANKS!!!!!

Thanks! I'm not sure if they are the same, but should work. You can probably ask someone who is selling individual keys to cut one or 2 out for you instead of supplying a key. I used to cut fully through the membrane as large as possible so people could trim them to how they wanted it.

Currently trying to research these keyboards a bit more as I’m looking to repair more difficult issues and I did not expect to see part of my listing at 3:10 haha - Very interesting video thank you

The shimming made me good money, got a full return on bulk lots, as for opening them I think it's impossible to do it neatly. One possibility for diagnosing could be inserting something in the key holes to connect a multimeter to pinpoint problem locations by comparing results to a known good keyboard and then possibly inserting a wiper with alcohol to clean problem areas.. I hope you're not the guy listing the 78 or 109 keys individually, rather than a single multiple item listing, because if so I want to fight you! 😤😉

@@FixTechStuff haha no the listing fees are 36p per listing per month, I think the guys who list them individually have a private eBay account 🤣 Yea it seems impossible to repair traces economically, unless perhaps it was nearby to the key and can be seen without opening perhaps, right now I’m mainly looking to figure out how to repair keyboards which are over sensitive / under sensitive Considering getting a ultrasonic cleaner but I’ve got no clue if it would be able to fix any of these keyboards, I always tried to fix the keyboards with a key stuck on but I usually gave up, seeing this video and the idea with the shims gives me hope and makes me want to go through my entire faulty inventory and test them all again now 🤣

@@FixTechStuff just successfully fixed a keyboard with your shimming method - one of the keys was way too sensitive - works normally now thanks again :)

Seems like water ingress or something has warped one layer of membrane. Try carefully lifting the buttons while pressing others (or inserting thin strips between the membrane), see if you can get a change when you press one of the keys.
