KEY CHANGES - extended 2020 edition - by Denis King - promotional video by Paul Heiney

Ойын-сауық

In the 50s and early 60s Denis King was a member of Britain’s first ever boy band The King Brothers. Since then, the artists with whom he has worked (and played) read like a who’s who of British and American stage and screen. He has been a pop star, a gold disk-selling TV composer (including ITV’s Black Beauty), a musical collaborator with theatre legends (Alan Ayckbourn among them), and has worked with a vast array of entertainment giants (including Jimi Hendrix, Tony Bennett, Nina Simone, Howard Keel, Sammy Cahn, Albert Finney, Dame Edna Everage, Maureen Lipman, Elaine Stritch, Dudley Moore, Ronnie Corbett, Frank Sinatra…).
Denis has written and recorded his memoirs KEY CHANGES and these personalities are all in it - it’s a personal account of the highs and lows of show business from post-war Variety, through the era of the Beatles, and on to TV, the West End, Broadway and beyond. But this is not a potted history or a lengthy name-drop - it is actually a very intimate, funny portrait of the grind as well as the glamour, in what most people outside the entertainment industry wrongly assume is a charmed way to earn a living.
"Denis King has delighted us with his music over many years, now he has written one of the funniest and most honest tributes I have ever read to the vanished world called Showbusiness." - Barry Humphries
“I’ve known Denis King for many years but in spite of that, I would strongly recommend this book.” - Barry Cryer
“Denis King changed my life. I remember seeing The King Brothers on TV and I thought, ‘Yes! I could do that!’ but I was too tall. So I had the operation and the rest is history.” - Bill Oddie
“His skills as racy raconteur and dry-as-a-bone humorist are as legendary as his tinkling fingers and classic compositions.” - Maureen Lipman
“Standing On The Corner - yes, one of the great records of that year. Or that month, certainly. I know Elvis borrowed a lot of tricks from The King Brothers.” - Michael Palin
“Denis is a trusty friend, a favourite collaborator, a fine musician, and a true original. Though what exactly he was originally, I really couldn't say.”
- Alan Ayckbourn
“Denis is a witty anecdotalist; the stories he tells are funny, poignant, and eye-opening. Mostly. Sometimes.” His Wife

Denis, lovely to see this and to get more of the lowdown on your illustrious career! Though I bumped into you often a few years back (a certain pub on the Suffolk coast), I didn't realise quite how much of the music of my lifetime you have contributed to (my ignorance, your humility). Thanks for that. Greetings to the family.

Just watched Minder On The Orient Express… the music from start to Finnish is absolutely shocking. Even for 1985. I challenge anyone to watch the first 5 minutes and not want to rip their ears off. What the Hell happened here? Just phoned it in?

Just finished 'Key Changes' and simply loved it Denis! What an interesting and creative life you have led. So many of the stories were so engaging and funny, for instance the hilarious Bouncing Ball Boogie number with your brothers, plus fascinating facts like your 1906 Blüthner grand piano once belonging to the great Stanley Holloway. Truly a wonderful read 🙂. N.B. I also downloaded the 'Black Beauty and Other TV Themes by Denis King' album from Amazon!

Not a problem Denis. I was born in 1960 and so nostalgia from the 60s and 70s tends to mean more to me as each year passes. I'll add a positive written review to Amazon this coming week. Hope you're coping with the oppressively hot weather! Ideal for some outdoor swimming!!
