"Having a catch with dad" is one of the easiest heartstrings to tug on, especially the older you get - Your dad is more likely to have passed on, you're more likely to have a kid of your own, etc. It's like it was engineered to make American men weepy.

The joke is on them. My parents divorced when I was a baby and I rarely if ever talked to my dad. I would willingly pass on playing catch with him.

I'm Chilean, so I never played baseball in my entire life, since it's not a popular sport in my country. And still, this movie makes me cry every time, mostly because I lost my dad just 3 years before, and I would give anything to get to play with him just one more time.
I'm glad Costner mentioned For Love of the Game, an overlooked, really good movie. One of my favorite movies of his.

When Conan said "two" I instantly thought of "Field of Dreams" and "For Love of the Game".....lol The reason that last five minutes is so effective is that it's universal. Could be baseball, could be football, could be any number of things, but the chance to spend just 5 more minutes with your old man..... Beautiful film. Costner thinks it's his generation's "It's a Wonderful Life", he's not wrong.

Just finished watching for maybe the 10th time throughout my life.. as many have said before me, the line, “Hey dad. Wanna have a catch,” is quite possibly one of the most moving lines of any film. Instantaneously I’m ten again. Waiting for my dad to come home from a long shift. Without hesitation, exhausted and covered in sweat and grease, he always grabbed his glove to have a catch with his boy. Irony is, I’ve never told him as a man how much that meant. I hope I find the courage before it’s too late. Thank you for creating a masterpiece.

@JPost55465 - Please do! Those are great experiences, playing catch with one's father. Especially when he comes in from a long day at work, tired, and still bonds with his son. Do tell your father how much it meant to you. It will be good for the both of you. God bless you with the courage to do so.
I'm 67. I remember watching Field of Dreams in a theater in Iowa, where I live. When it was over I burst into tears. I sobbed like never before. 20 minutes. Everyone had left the theater. Why? The tension between Intuitions of what could be, inner knowing from the Spiritual Realm, and one man's realization of his Possibility. That made my 'dreams' possible, as well. I wasn't insane or fatally flawed. I was being guided by a science humans could not yet understand. All of that streamed down my face. Later, I visited that baseball field in Dyersville, Iowa. They get about ten thousand people a year that visit there from all over the world!

I just rewatched it with some friends, the longer, director's cut, and I remember really enjoying it, but as an adult it feels like a Disney ride come to life. I remember more post-apocalyptic theming and exploration, but it's really just a bunch of cartoon characters launching their jet skis off jumps with a sex trafficking subplot.

I was in the commercial for 'Field Of Dreams', and when Kevin says in this interview that Field of Dreams is 'our generation's It's A Wonderful Life', that was MY line from the TV commercial that I ad-libbed for the cameras. Thx for the quote, Kev!
I cry every freakin' time I watch it. The "Wanna have a catch" scene... Never fails!
For me it's about a males inherent need to connect and be accepted by his Father. In the movie his Father had died and he had to live with the fact that the opportunity was lost. When he came back however it was like a second chance. Men get emotional because of the lack of connection with their Fathers and the burning question a son has..." am I enough Dad, do I measure up?" We all need that acceptance and validation from our Dads. Fatherhood is so important!
I like that Kevin said" "Field of Dreams" was our generation's, "It's a Wonderful Life".

It’s true that movie always makes me cry at the end! I love baseball and it’s the one thing my father and I shared and had in common! We loved the game. I even played the same position of catcher just because my dad played it. So when I saw or whenever I see that ending it just gets me, especially now that my father is gone! You can call me sissy or whatever you want but that movie just gets to me because it always reminds me of my father! I miss him and I miss playing baseball too lol. Catcher is not good on the knees so I guess I am officially retired LOL, But I would do it again!
I'm not really into the baseball movies, but his Dance with Wolves, I can't keep a dry eye at the end when the guy is shouting from the clifftops how they'll always be friends. And even though the 4-hour cut wasn't sanctioned by Costner (I just found that out), despite a few strange edits and some goober acting bits, I love it even more than the theatrical cut. I don't think Open Range made me cry, but that is one beautiful looking movie.

Playing catch with Dad is something I'll always remember! One time we met up with a neighbor at a restaurant. We were a little late and saw the dad and son playing catch in the parking lot! We always had gloves and a baseball in the trunk if we were the ones who showed-up early. RIP, Flit!!!!❤
Knowing that he used to refuse to have a catch with his dad out of spite, and then getting another chance. When his dad says, “I’d like that,” that part gets to me.
Love Aspen. It truly is a beautiful place. I’m from Scotland and stayed three summers there. A friend of mine has met Costner and his parents. She said they were down to earth genuine people. This was years ago now. Anyway, my boys and I loved field of dreams.
Never seen the movie, but now I have to find it somewhere. I have to watch it alone... just in case.
Personally I don't think it's just the "have a catch", but it's the possibility of truely having a second chance, and do what you loved, or in the films case missed, with your dad. I'd do anything to get a second chance to do anything with my dad.
Just down the road from me , here in the New Forest England U.K. there is/was a little cricket field that a guy created by doing , pretty much , what field of dreams did, and blow me down Kevin Costner turned up after it was done and had a few pictures with the guy who did it , lovely man by all accounts
"For Love of The Game" is an iconic baseball movie for me! Maybe three of the top ten or twenty sports movies ever...

I'm sorry you didn't get to have that with your dad. It's a special thing. But whether it's baseball or something else, I hope you have great memories.
It touches you because many times in life your Dad passes on before you fully mature, before you truly understand the man. Maybe before you have that last living conversation to try to say things or make things right. And as you grow older and see things in a different light you long to just have an hour or so talk to him. Say the things you should have, ask the questions. But you can't. It's a sadness and regret that never goes away. There's always that part of you that longs for that..maybe even call it redemption.

I met Kevin at a Panera bread when I was the FOH employee, he’s literally one of the most genuine humans. I got to the point of asking him if he had a membership with Panera and he did, I got extremely excited and lit up on the inside because he was semi incognito, however I recognized him and kept it to myself and both of us were aware that I knew who he was; I then swiped his membership card only to see that he had a totally fake ass name and it was so hilarious because I was excited to see Kevin’s name on the Point of Sale, instead… it was some totally bogus BS name with maybe a good address, best part was when he got his food he shot me the NY finger for not blowing his cover! How cool for Kevin Costner, by virtue of making these iconic baseball films, now has a permanent connection with the history of the game and with MLB. Like he said, whenever he goes to a ballgame he gets these extra perks that most people will never experience. That Aspen land cannot be understated.....it's literally in a paradise spot away from the town. He has a ploy of land in a valley that Colorado itself would not allow anymore a private citizen to purchase, he luckily got it during the 90s. The people around the municipality would love to have it as a public land and I'm pretty sure he can't even sell it at this point... Or if he sells it... can only be back to the state of Colorado.

Interesting. I'm curious which valley it's in (I'm too lazy to dig around for it). The Telluride/Sangre de Cristo area is supposed to be even more beautiful but it's kind of out of the way from everywhere. Aspen feels secluded but is also well populated. Downtown is kind of weird, though.
