If you're familiar with Joe Rogan's podcast and kettlebell training, you've probably seen his slightly funny - but even more dangerous - kettlebell routine on the ONNIT KZread channel.
In his workout bit, Joe is gripping and ripping some heavy kettlebells and is obviously doing an alternating kettlebell clean with doubles.
In this video, I want to break down the problem of this kettlebell exercise, explain how he might have injured his shoulder through it and show you what you can do instead.
The kettlebell clean (with doubles and singles) is an awesome exercise; however in Joe Rogan’s demonstration, there are a 5 problems I'm highlighting in this video.
1- If you’re going for doubles, don’t alternate between left and right but instead, do them togehter!
Double Cleans are a vital component of a basic kettlebell exercise called the long cycle. Double Cleans almost work and stabilize the entire body and it’s a great exercise that requires a lot of skill
2- Use light weight; especially if youre technique is not yet developed!
The Girevoy or Kettlebell Sports Style is like the ballet of kettlebells and it takes some serious effort to learn it. You even see some OGs and legendary coaches like Dennis Vasilev talking about how they need to work on their Overhead fixation and he’s a 7 time world Kettlebell champion.
Mastering the girevoy kettlebell technique definitely takes practice and patience.
3- If you go heavy and you’re alternating, you got the perfect recipe for injury!
Essentially, you grip it and rip it! Everytime the bell lands in the rack, your shoulder is banging around violently. This leads to a possible injury of the wrist and shoulder joint and a serious inflammation of the rotator cuff and all the tendons and ligaments attached to it.
4- If Joe didn’t warm up prior to this, you got the perfect recipe for disaster!
Because the shoulder lacks stability, it’s best to tread lightly with your shoulder training. One of the ways to keep injury away from you is a proper warm up. In the mentioned ONNIT video, it seems like Joe didn’t warm up prior to this demonstration.
If you’re not warmed up, going heavy, with a dangerous exercise on a delicate joint, you’ve messed up seriously!
5- Alternating Cleans with heavy weights leads to incorrect tecnique!
The clean, like most of the kettelbell exercises, is working your core, among other muscle groups. If you rip it and grip it, you’re essentially pulling the weight with your arms. If you pull the weight with your arms, you’re not utilizing leg drive and core strength.
Essentially, you’re doing the exercise wrong and as well know, doing free weights wrong can be.. bad

Sean, you need to apply better logic and stop assuming people’s motives. I’ve watched a ton of JRE podcasts. Go read the comments on those videos, his fan base loves to joke about Joe’s fascination with DMT and elk meat. The fact remains though, in the video clip in question he was using horrible technique that if copied long term will lead to injuries. I’ve formulated this conclusion based on tens-of-thousands of hours Coaching Strength & Conditioning, and holding more certifications over than years than I care to type. Among them: NSCA CSCS, RKC, MovNat, and coursework at the university level in kinesiology, exercise science, and coaching clinics and internships.

I was pissed I couldn't get heavier bells during the pandemic but that made me learn the moves (clean, snatch, TGU etc..) with 45 pounds as my heaviest bell, probably the best thing that could have happened to me. Yeah... as someone with benign joint hypermobility disorder, I can say adrenaline rushes and pushing through to get it done can really wreck your body. With my body I damage it and can't feel it while it's happening. These bells seem very inconsistent. They flip flop around, and look super dangerous when people hold them over their heads. Not any worse than others I suppose.

To be fair, this guy's using kettlebells that are half the weight of the ones Joe used (70 lbs). The yellow strip on them is what the 16 kg (35 lb) ones have. Joe was using 70 lb kettlebells, so I'm not surprised it looked a lot worse than a guy doing it with literally half the weight. So I think the main problem for Joe is just to go a bit lighter so his form can be smoother.

It’s all relative to intensity. I have seen folks say not to do static stretching before lifts, but I always do some dynamic stretching, and I never just jump cold into what is high intensity for me. So shoulder dislocates and KB halos with a 12kg KB are a warmup. Then work up to your 36KG KB snatch. You may be able to jump right into that cold, but I hurts me just thinking about it.

A full body joint routine plus a quick pvc bar routine is the best warm up in my opinion. Start with the neck and end with your ankles. And then begin your kettlebel routine with static clean/shoulder press holds.

Failing to lock the knees in the rack/ rest position is a clear mistake I have now rectified. The leaning back is to rest the kettlebell on the iliac crest on my hips. It's a kettlebell sport technique. - Gregory

@@lebe-stark thanks for replying to my comment, love your videos. Me using the word “major” is dramatic, especially since I am sure it’s cultural & regional so I can’t generalize, and I’ve only been to gyms in the Northeastern USA anyways (the tri-state area & New England). When I started lifting weights there were guys in my gym who started lifting in prison years prior and believe it or not they were super supportive & encouraging and that was one of the things they told me when I was new. Plus I think a lot of them (+a lot of the guys at the gym) are already insecure, and have low self esteems so I think they appreciate it. Amongst good friends obviously it’s a different story...

@@lebe-stark I like the alternating clean (with light weight) but I don't do it very often. I always do single arm clean and press mostly. The alternating clean doesn't allow you to get as good of a hip hinge as you normally would so it becomes more of a rotating dead clean. Which should require lower weight as to not injure yourself. It has it's place as an alternate (pun intended) workout from time to time.

Ohhhh KZread Professionals: Some times I Just feel sorry for those looking info in youtube : In this video- a "professional" is laughing on someones technique while he himself is miles away from good technique and understanding of what kettlebells are . So my thoughts to the author: 1. Better fix your fingers in rack position before you broke them- it tells everything about your professionalism 2. Learn how to work with doubles before you teach how to work with them 3. That alternating clean that you laughing about is very good exercise and can be performed with different techniques. And no problem with shoulders 4. There is no right or wrong exercise it depends on your goals 5. Beware usually there are many techniques for 1 kb exercise 6. KB training is not black or white 7. Everything is possible with kettlebells🤣
