Kersi Lord | Guftagoo with Irfan

Ойын-сауық

July 2014, Mumbai
Meet master music arranger and instrumentalist Kersi Lord who gave memorable tunes to Hindi Films during a career spanning more than 50 years.
More about Kersi Lord-
Kersi Lord (14 February 1935 - 16 October 2016) was an Indian film score composer, music arranger and accordion player. He was particularly well known for his association with noted Indian music composers like Naushad, Madan Mohan, S D Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R D Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji and Usha Khanna.
Kersi was born in Mumbai to Cowas and Banubai Lord. His father was a pioneering Indian percussionist who is credited with bringing the bongo and Conga to Hindi film music. His mother came from a family of musicians. His younger sister Hilla played the piano and brother Burjor (also known as Buji) is a prominent percussionist.
Kersi Lord started his career at the age of 14. He would often accompany his father to the studios. In 1949-50, Naushad ji was composing music for film Jadoo and enquired with Cowas Kaka about master Kersi who was accompanying him in the studios. On knowing that Kersi was being groomed by Cowas Kaka, Naushad ji allowed Kersi to play Bongos in recording of song Lo Pyar Ki Ho Gai Jeet. Kersi soon joined the orchestras as a percussionist, playing various Latin-American instruments, especially the jazz drums.
He died in October 2016, aged 81. He was suffering from age-related illnesses and had been hospitalised for nearly a week. His funeral was held at the Parsi Crematorium in Worli.
Lord is survived by his daughters Jasmin, Perizad and Zarine.

I saw this phenomenon in 1968 in Paramaribo Surinam, speechless. The announcer Nandi Duggal said by his upcoming: Ienhe badja ki itna shaukh hai ki ab tak shaadi nahin ki.¨ With Buji Lord they mastered every instrument, together with Charanjit Singh, introducing the transrecord.

11:15, anchor was singing: "kisi ki muskurahaton pe ho nisar". But the inference was the theme music of 'hum dono' used in "main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya" and "abhi na jao chhodkar"....???

Going from his interviews, he was such a gifted, down to earth guy. His role cannot be understated. Not just an all rounder, but introducing tape echo, synthesizers, glockenspiel AND arranging too..kya baat hai. Tum Jo Mil gaye ho, by Madan Mohan ji & Rafi sahib was arranged by him. I think a lot of naushad sahib's later songs were arranged by him too, such as Saathi's songs and Ganwaar etc. His musical stamp must be on so many songs from the 50s onwards. R D burman's phase may have been from the 70s onwards and that's where you hear the synths, tape echo and percussion fun. Kersi ji mentioned Frank Fernandez & he arranged for Kalyanji Anandji & his stamp is all over their 70s stuff.

The Saathi song "mera pyar bhi tu hai" has a very distinct 2 tabla rythm. I don't know if any other song has such rythm

That is because Kersi is not a good narrator. You will notice there is little nostalgic emotion. He is too detached. That’s why Irfan has to find another question that will add continuity
