In reality the legendary S.D.Burman was a member of The Tripura Royal family. His mother was the royal princess of Manipur. And was the daughter of the king. Sachin Da was a Royal both , in blood and in music. What a genius he was.

@Begum Sahiba, S.D. Burman was from the royal family of Tripura, a blue blooded prince, as mother too was from the royal family as rightly mentioned by you. Music was in his blood, for which he left his riches and comforts of the palace to pursue his passion.

Srinivasan ji, I am glad you liked this interview of one of our living legends in the Hindi film world. Not only Kersi ji, but all living musicians have confirmed to me during their voice recorded or video recorded interviews that Sachinda was not sick during Aradhana and he alone is responsible for the entire music of Aradhana and all his movies. Late Manohari Singh too has confirmed to me in his voice recorded interview that all movies of Dada Burman have music by him alone.

@ Ananandamurti, Sachin Dev Burman left comfortable life of palace and riches of royal life to pursue his passion for music. He travelled to to interiors of villages of North East, United Provinces and Bengal sitting on mud floor with Common man to collect and popularize folk songs which later he mixed with film music. No other music director has done these sacrifices. It's really remarkable.

@@anandamuraliarumugam5608From 1930 to 1936, when fusion music was not heard of at least in India, SD Burman carried out fusion of classical and folk music, thereby creating a Burman gharana. Thereafter he popularized folk music through film music. India lives in villages, and folk music is India's soul. All this, and more, he wrote in his autobiography.

Still remember the announcement of Nadi Duggal: "Ienko badja mein etna shaukh hai ki aadj tak shaadi nahin ki hai." I also remember the song: Towba yeh nazare yek katil ishaare. It was SUPER!!

Aradhana being a very emotional story, I chose Dada Burman to give its music. Rafi had to leave on his foriegn trip for two months. A few songs had yet to be recorded, requiring male singer. I suggested to Dada Burman to consider Kishore Kumar, adding that Dada had given us excellent Kishore Kumar songs in the past." (continued)

Once Amit Kumar in a an interview said that Dada Burman composed a typical folk tune for Roop Tera Mastana, but director Shakti Samanta was not very comfortable with the tune as he opined that the romantic element was missing. It was Kishore Kumar who sugessted the tune of another bengali folk song which was finally okayed by Shaktida.

sanjay bhowmick Dada Burman picked up folk tune, Kishore did improve it and Dada approved it as per my interview with Manohari Singh. That was Dada who encouraged his subordinates and singers. Finally it's the music directors call without whose approval nothing can move. Let's not forget that SDB gave such youthful songs before and after Aradhana right till his death. When Kishore came to rehearse 'Badi sooni sooni hai' with SDB, there was so much pathos in his voice that Kishore started crying. He couldn't continue and left saying that he is not ready for recording and would intimate when he is.

Very insightful interview for Hindi film music lovers and diehard S D Burman fans like me. I am glad Lord summarily rejected so many canards spread about SDB composing many youthful tunes of the time! Rumours were spread starting from Teen Deviyan song Arre Yaar Tumbhi ..., Jewel Thief : Ye dil na hoto ..., Raat Akheli hai.., Baite hain kya ...etc., The other day I heard an old number from Lal Kunwar - Suraiyya : Nighahen ..... Till his last film, not a single number composed by him is boring. What more tribute can a composer get?

@sri sri ji, SD Burman is the only composer who moved with times and remained top contender from the start to finish of his career, while many others faded away. Before the Filmfare awards were created, he composed soulful music in several films, like Do Bhai, Shabnam, Mashal, creating hit music in all of 7 released films in 1951 which included Bahar, and Sazaa, before he decided to to accept 3 to 4 films per year. A master in all genres of music, he worked hard on Kishore Kumar and took him away from copying Saigal, and to find his own voice. Thanks to SD for popularity of KK and Dev, both of whom became top contenders in their own field. Take any generation of composers, from Naushad to L-P, K-A and his own son RD, he gave them run for their money, winning Abhimaan Filmfare award against the last 3 who too were contenders. A number of awards would have been his but for machinations of some. There's a lot more to write about him. Thanks for comments. Please see all my videos.

@@lalwanimoti Thank you for your nice response. What I have always found distinctive in SDB's music was the tantalising lilt that gave his tunes a timeless attraction. Adapting himself to changing times , he gave tunes that were at once contemporary and everlasting. No SDB fan will find time to listen to other composers' songs immersed as they are in SDB's songs! You refer to his Filmfare award for Abhimaan against other contenders like LP, KA and RDB ; but I have always felt he didn't get his due credit , when his Best in the Millenium compositions - Guide and Aradhana didn't get Filmfare thanks to the stupid 'coupon collection' system Filmfare followed. ( Same was the fate of Madan Mohan's Woh Kaun Thi, Heer Ranjha and RDB's AAp Ki Kasam etc.,) .

@@srisri3458 bhai, Thanks for comments. Yes, it's true that SDB composed many songs making singer sing in a particular way, which could be called tantalising/teasing/etc. In a way, SDB used to put life in to the songs. One of the best example is of Amar Prem song, 'Bada natkhat hai re, Krishna Kanahiya'. Please read on: Pancham was at ‘The Jet’ (Dada’s Bungalow) as director Shakti Samantha arrived to brief him on the first recording for ‘Amar Prem’. “Dada too was there as Shakti outlined the song-situation to me” noted Pancham. “To an ordinary composer like me, it appeared a stock situation for which I produced a stock song. But Dada saw it totally differently. In fact, as Dada proceeded to observe: ‘Your tune’s absolutely straight, Pancham, where’s the feeling in it? What if Shakti said a mere bhajan-style tune would do? You’re a composer, Pancham, no mere tunesmith. How possibly could you place a bhajan-style tune on a prostitute, which is what Rinku (Sharmila Tagore) plays in Amar Prem.’ ‘This, remember, is no ordinary prostitute,’ went on Dada. ‘This is a situation in which the woman is a mother first, a prostitute after. So the tune you compose, Pancham, must cinematically reflect - in each note - the prostitute’s mother instinct, which has suddenly been aroused by that child’s straying into what’s forbidden territory for such a kid.’ ‘The tune must have a rare sentiment’ added Dada. ‘But your tune, if catchy, Pancham, sounds routine to the composer in me - it’s taken no note of the prostitute’s instant urge to mother that child. You have, here, to be sensed as feeling, evocatively, for the mother in the prostitute.’ “Saying which,” continued Pancham, “Dada took over the harmonium from me and proceeded to modify the tune. Dada stayed within the same Khamaj thhaat, stuck to the same Raag Khamaj, while imparting a new feeling to my tune. The tune ultimately emerging was, if I’m to be honest, more Dada’s than mine.” “I’d provided the base tune. It was left to Dada to give it a super-sensitive turn by which it unfolded the heart-tugging way it ultimately did on Sharmila Tagore - as Bada natkhat hai yeh Krishna Kanhaiya, ka kare Yashoda maiya ho. “In that moment, I learnt from Dada that a composer’s job doesn’t end with preparing a mundane tune for a situation mundanely outlined to him,” confessed R D Burman. “The music-maker - as underlined by Dada - must get involved in the film’s script, study the character for whom he’s composing and acquire the perception to project his composing personality into the character by venturing to experience her experiences. It was this one Bada natkhat tune as reshaped by Dada,” concluded Pancham, “that determined the tone I brought to the rest of the Amar Prem music - through numbers like 'Raina beetee jaaye', 'Chingaree koyee bhadke', 'Yeh kya huaa' and 'Kuchch to log kahenge'. The vocals of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar did the rest.” The author (Raju Bharatan) concludes, “Can there be another Amar Prem, another Pancham? Only if there can be another Guide, another Sachin Dev Burman”. (Source: ‘A MATTER OF FINE TUNING’ by Raju Bharatan in HT-Café of Nov. 5, 2007)

Mehmood had offered his films to father in early 1960s, which went to RD, because SD declined. SD declined Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Dev went to son RD. Nasir Hussain begged SD to compose music for at least one film, but father declined. Vijay Anand is on record that Dada used to request them to give chance to son Pancham. The greatness of S.D Burman can't really be explained in words. He was a man who was way ahead of his time. You could feel the music even in his old 1930s-40s Bengali and Hindi compositions.Today all the music channels,FMs revere R.D Burman and his music(Rightfully),but I haven't seen any of them doing any kind of tribute to S.D Burman. His range was greatest among all his contemporaries ,as Gulzar said when he mentioned that the songs of Sujata(Bimal Roy Movie) and Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi were composed at the same time and it is hard to imagine that they were done by the same composer. Anyway,It was a really nice and frank interview of Mr.Kesri Lord.In a magazine called Cineplot, Burman Sahab has even written some articles about the importance of movies without any song and the importance of silence in movies,as mentioned by Mr.Lord. It would be really nice if you can get some interviews of Burman Sahab in his own voice. The only thing available in the net seems to be 1970-Jaimala hosted by S.D Burman..Thank You!

At the same time, I would not say that RDB was not involved during the orchestration. But that was subject to approval of Sachinda. There is a strong possibility that Dada didn't approve what RDB wanted so he left the recording to his father. You are aware that Dada Burman was firm even with greats like Bimal Roy and had his say always. After all it was his music.

@@ghalibmahmudlaskar5980 It's nothing new. After my reserach most of them have accepted the truth. But sometimes someone continues to believe. My reply is in three parts: Part I I want to share with comments of music love Shree Bheemsinh, who is music lover and fan of both SDB and RDB. He had me Shakti Samanta in 2006. This is what he wrote in our SD Burman Group on Facebbok in 2006. "I don’t want to make this as controversy as it is discussed at pancham group several times. I do believe the persons those were present at that time only. as per my discussion with Shakti da, its Purely SDB's work. As I'm great Music lover of the Burman Clan, no offences, and only due respect to the legends. Any claim or statement made by pancham group is difficult to believe. Here's a slight observation of Pancham group, which is having a large number of hypothetical brains. Some hypothesis are - - Any music credited to Panchamda, is created by Panchamda (no doubt :)). - Music Composed by Sachinda, is composed by Panchamda, - Music Credited or composed by Panchamda's assistents is composed by Panchamda. - Music Composed by Pancham da's friends is composed by Panchamda. - Music composed by person who is not of above categories, is not composed by Panchamda, but somewhere music looks Like Panchamish, may be that person was Inspired by Panchamda's music. - And music may be recorded but not used and leaked by recording studio employee. Please don't Underestimate or over-glorify the legends, love them as they are." Bheemsinh in Yahoogroups. Parts II I have interviews of music directors, writers, etc, mine and from other relaible sources. All of them have rubbished the claims that RDB composed anything for SDB. Let us not forget that SDB was a well trained in classical music from various gurus, and had done extensive research folk muisc. All the younger geeration music directors like K-A, L-P, RDB, Shantanu Moitra, Ravindra Jain, etc have got inspired from SDB's music. They have even given credit to SDB for their songs. Part III Later in life, immediately after his father's death, RDB has gone on record in an interview that he had boasted that his Baba copied some of his tunes. I have that interview. If you give me your Email address, I shall share it with you.

@vaishnavi kadam ‘Bada natkhat hai yeh’ Pancham was at ‘The Jet’ (Dada’s Bungalow) as director Shakti Samantha arrived to brief him on the first recording for ‘Amar Prem’. So the tune you compose, Pancham, must cinematically reflect - in each note - the prostitute’s mother instinct, which has suddenly been aroused by that child’s straying into what’s forbidden territory for such a kid.’ The author (Raju Bharatan) concludes, “Can there be another Amar Prem, another Pancham? Only if there can be another Guide, another Sachin Dev Burman”. (Source: ‘A MATTER OF FINE TUNING’ by Raju Bharatan in HT-Café of Nov. 5, 2007)

I'm not sure of the Part No. What's not true is that the way Amit mimics Burman Dada signing, 'Roop tera mastaana' is impossible. Let's not forget that much before Aradhana came in 1969, Dada took out Kishore from his K.L. Saigal mode and honed his voice to such an extent that Kishore could compete for number one spot. Who can forget Kishore songs of Dev Anand in Munimji, Funtoosh, Nau Do Gyarah, Paying Guest and others. Amit is a showman who has to entertain his audience.

Original song is neither a comedy song nor a song composed by SD Burman. It was a folk song on which Burman Dada based his tune of 'Roop tera mastana'. The following anecdote was narrated to me by Khagesh Dev Burman (the author of biography on SDB) in his voice recorded interview: Khagesh Dev Burman: About this song, SD has said that it is originally based on a Bengali folk song. He has said in an interview that he had composed this song, the origin of which was that a small girl was singing while playing a game of ‘Hopscotch’. The song had an earthy flavour to it. The songs words were: ‘Aajke jaabo shashurbari, Saajiye de aamay taratari’ (I have to go to my father-in-law's house today, dress me up quickly.) Question: The girl was singing? KDB: Yes, that was the song, SD has said. When the girl’s father appeared, Sachinda asked him, ‘What is happening? What are you doing?’ He replied, ‘Jo mera ladki hai na, usko shaadi de raha hun’ (She is my daughter. I am marrying her off.) ‘Shaadi de raha hun! Abhi kyon? (Marrying her off! Why now?) SDB asked (observing that the girl was very young), Father: ‘Bada hoke toh kharab ho jayega’ (When she grows up, she might go astray!) ‘Uski thaali de raha hoon, nahin toh kharaab ho jayega. Abhi dena hai’ (I am conducting her ceremonies; else she might go astray. I have to marry her off now.) ‘Usi ka gaana hai, Aajke jaabo shashurbadi’ (‘That’s the song, Today I am going to in-laws place’) Question: SD had said this? KDB: Yes, SD had said this. He has kept the tune in ‘Roop tera mastana’. That tune attracted him. Then he created this song.

Moti Lalwani Sir. I dont know who all started this crap against SDB. As you are aware that SDB is one of the greatest composers of that time, he need not depend on anyone else to make "Roop tera mastana". I heard from my dad who is no more that he is a self esteemed man. When the producers of Prem Nagar approached him to score music, they insisted that the same tunes of telugu songs to be used.(Prem Nagar is the remake of telugu super hit Prem Nagar for which Late K.V. Mahadevan scored music), for which SDB fittingly replied that if at all same tunes had to be used, why you need me? you can ask Mr. K.V. Mahadevan to score for hindi remake also. If you want me to score music, you have to take my compositions only, for which the producers agreed. He was right. So why will he depend on someone's tunes to get an award for his songs? Before Aradhana, he composed so many songs for Funtoosh, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Jewel Thief, Guide, to name a few. Do those who raised a finger think that these songs lack melody? One thing is sure. As I said before that he is a self esteemed person, that might have been the reason why he didnt work much with legends like Raj kapoor saab, who prefers S-J over SDB, who as for as my knowledge is concerned, interferes with tunes and forces the Music Directors to use certain western tunes, which he picks up when he goes abroad.
