This video shows the finishing steps of making a kerfed subwoofer enclosure port. This second video shows how to strengthen the port with fiberglass resin and mat, and finalize the smoothness of the port with body filler. Not only that I share important techniques for doing these steps!

Good video with lots of good 411. Ill be watching ur videos to help me with a classic car.
thanks a lot bro your video has been a big help of motivation I will definitely give this a try I will send some pics to you if it comes out well
So if you wanted to make something like the JL stealth box under the trunk floor, would you kerf mdf to make a cylindrical shape to fit into the spare tire well?
Kerf: to cut through wood with a saw blade, but not completely through the wood. You are making a series of kerfs that allow you to curve the wood. Thanks for watching!

CarAudioFabrication actually the definition of kerf is the width of removed material equal to the width of the sawblade. so if you have a 1/8" kerf blade, and you cut a 48" piece of wood in half, you won't have x2 24" pieces of wood, you will have x2 23-15/16" pieces. what you are cutting is 1/8" dados. a Dado is a cut through the width of a piece of wood without going through the entirety of the thickness of the material.
THANKS A LOT..JUST LEARN HOW TO DO KERF BOXES..AND THANK'S CHEERS!!
I was wanting to know how you figure out how much longer your piece of wood needs to be to compensate for kerfing. I am building a box and I will need a 28" port. I want a single piece of wood to run from the left corner on the top of the box witch it 38" all the way down to where the port will end 3" from the bottom. it would be 35" where the port/ end of the kerfing needs to be.
Thanks! I appreciate the sharing on facebook!
make the length shorter so the depth gets larger, all part of the art of designing an enclosure, hope that helps. (I was totally grabbing numbers out of the air)
Do i measure in (from the 40 inch mark) the radius of the calculated kerf? So that the bend of the kerf reaches a point to where the box still has a 40 " length?
Do you mean the length of the port? I am confused what you are asking.
MARK! Well documented kerf vids man, I have one question though; How do you control the length of the overall box being that the kerf is rounded and will alter the length of the box? Will it simply be the radius of the caclulated diameter of the kerf that you used in video 1?
I think im asking my question wrong. I've already designed my box, calc'd the port vol and all of that. I want to know, how far to i measure from the edge of my wood to the point where you start the kerf cuts if i want to maintain an overal length of "x" amount.
Could you just use the fiberglass resin instead of glue when you bend it over? Would it be stronger than glue?
oh ok. that makes complete sense :) thank you :)
Like button SMASHED!
No. For example. I have calculated a box, but have decided to kerf the port instead of using the regular L-port design. But to maintain the calculated length of the box at (lets say) 40", how do i include the kerfs bend into the length of the box to make sure it remains at a length at 40"...
You need more views man ;)
@ caraudiofabrication - Can you just use wood glue (sanded) and leave out the fiber glass steps when kerfing? BTW can you check my math: 12" diameter x pi = 37.699. Then 37.699/4 = 9.42: correct?
I noticed you didn't use or show using any jigs or spacers when installing your piece to the other flat piece. For those that want to try doing this I would highly recommend cutting your desired radius or spacers out of some scrap wood to place and secure at each end of your curved piece (temporarily) to make sure everything stays in the proper shape and doesn't flare out on you while the wood filler is setting. The wider the piece the higher the risk of the open end to flare out as the wood will want to relax back to it's original flat shape, even a small amount of flare will create nothing but problems later in the build and look like crap. Also make sure to be extra careful to use the right drill with countersink in the curved sections on assembly if you don't have a brad nailer. Good video as always!
Quick question, long story short. I'm doing a project and want to kerf the wood. MDF is a little more than I would like to spend, would particle board work well?

Kevin Scharba nope
higher resolution please
I think you are going about your design process wrong. Lets say I know I want the box to be 40 long and 15 tall. I will keep the depth as a variable. I determine how big I want the air space (2 cubic ft) and then find the port dimensions, say 3" wide by 15 tall by 30 long. I use those port dimensions to find the volume of the port (3x15x30=.78cubic ft) I add that to 2 = 2.78 cubic ft or 4803 cubic inches. Then divide by 40 and 15 = 8, my depth would be 8, now obviously that wont work so I might
why is it called kerfing instead of curving?
maby its just me but i cant ger this shit to work for me at all
What if I wanted like a 45 degree bend instead of a 90?
