Howdy Mike , you're the fellow with guitar lessons here on YT aren't you ? you make some good observations here and don't do too bad in the guitar department yourself . I remember as a kid mostly listening to big band , Ellington and Goodman and rock was of the guitar of the day . Sonnys Bridge Album with Jim Hall opened jazz up for me and then I got Kennys Guitar Forms . It was like travelling to another dimension ! OTW ! I'm only lately now in my old age getting to actually playing some of Kennys stuff , working on his arrangements of xmas tunes where corny as they may be to some Kenny shows again where his real brilliance lies , as you say , "actually SAY(ing) something" ! putting chords together true to the melody and getting complicated jazz lines actually work in a down to earth way with no pretentious jazz noodling . First heard KB in the early to mid 60's in a small jazz club and he remained one of my favorites ever since.

Love the space in his playing......

Utterly superb. What was that? About six choruses with the band, then four more in the break, and not repeating himself on a single one, swinging furiously throughout? Good God, the man could play that ax. What a musician.

1981. Dad took me to see Kenny Burrell at a San Jose jazz club. I was an 18 y.o. guitar player. I expected the place to be jam packed for a legend like Kenny Burrell. Imagine my shock when only 12 people showed up to see Kenny play that night. But all 12 of us had front row tables and Kenny played superbly.

That's pretty typical. The first time I heard my old guitar teacher play, it was the same thing. And he's a phenomenal guitar player. You know what they say: a rock guitarist plays 3 chords in front of 10,000 people and a jazz guitarist plays 10,000 chords in front of 3 people.

Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery were in fact the two best jazz guitarists of all time IMHO. Range, clarity, diversity, improvisation....they were the best of all.

+James D. Mac Isaac Sr. I can certainly appreciate the sentiment, as they are both truly great players, but "best" is word I tend to take issue with. Ok ok lol, you say IMHO, and you are certainly entitled to that. Lenny Breau is one that I think is far too often overlooked. There are so many new innovative guitarists today who are continuing to evolve: Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gilad Hekselman, the list goes on. I just believe in favorites, not bests.

The Korean Epiphone Emperor is a great jazz guitar. I didn't care for the pickup, so I replaced it with a Bartolini Johnny Smith floater. Epiphone/Samick quit making the Emperor, but you can find them on ebay for a good price. You might like the stock pickup, but if not you can replace it as I did. The craftsmanship is there in the construction of the guitar. Different amps produce different sounds. I play through a Polytone MIni Brute II which gives me the jazz tone I want. Shop around.

Can someone please tell me...how the hell does Mr.Burrell get that tone?.....I'm searching for it everywhere!!

Not sure either, but he probably doesn't have his tone knob all the way down and muted like other jazz guitarists do. It is more of a bluesy guitar tone than the typical jazz guitar muted tone.

Most of a player's tone is in their hands . A combo of right hand attack, string position of the pluck, left hand tension/muting, how he's trained his ear over his lifetime and some other mysterious Juju. If you had Kenny B play a mediocre guitar, he'd still get very good tone. Or, give a mediocre player Kenny's setup -how would you expect it to sound? Not like him. And for equipment, don't forget the strings themselves. Hard to tell from the video but most players in this style use flat-wounds and that will really mellow out the tone.

Roy Massie Good points. Also, I think so many jazz guitarists roll their tone knob either completely off or like down to a 1 or so. However, I think Mr. Burrell doesn't do that with the tone knob, which gives it a much more bluesy tone than that muted jazz tone we're all so accustomed to hearing. I suggest if you have a jazz guitar, simply try not muting the tone knob and see if it's close to his tone. Peace!

I love Kenny B... but Dr. RC is a living national treasure... put him on money.

That's a Super 400, not an L5. My mistake, sorry. The inlay gave it away. The L5 has solid pearl blocks.

Gespereet has a grudge against the drummer here so doesn't want to let us know who he is.
