Kenneth Williams - The Life of an Introverted Extrovert!

Please join me in this video, Kenneth Williams - The Life of an Introverted Extrovert!
Kenneth Williams began his career as a serious actor but his talent for comedy made him one of Britain's best-loved comedic actors and television personalities, throughout his life. He was also a much sought-after guest on chat shows. His film career will always be forever linked with the Carry On Films and Kenneth Williams was the only member of the cast to appear in 26 out of the 31 films made.
This video is not a resume of Kenneth William's career, however, it's a brief glimpse into the private life of an iconic comedy legend. Kenneth Williams was a complicated character of extremes, both publically and privately a man of tumultuous emotions who struggled to find his way. Kenneth Williams was a man who was loved by many but found it impossible to find a partner to share his home and his life with.

Kenneth Williams truly was incomparable; without doubt one of the funniest men ever to grace our screens or radio. He was also a longtime panellist on BBC Radio’s ‘Just A Minute”, hosted by Nicholas Parsons. In fact latterly it became his main source of income. Of all his many television interviews, I think his most revealing was that which he gave to journalist Mavis Nicholson in 1974 on Thames TVs ‘Good Afternoon’. Although he was his usual witty self, it was an unusual interview for Williams in that he visibly relaxed and in consequence revealed far more about himself. He even called Mavis Nicholson by her first name, something I don't recall him doing with any other interviewer. I worked for the Beeb in the very early 80s and can confirm that Kenneth Williams was extremely private. Apparently in the event that anyone visiting his flat needed the loo, he kept a pile of pennies to hand and directed them to the nearby public lavatories. (I’ve put a link to the interview with the lovely Mavis Nicholson below) kzread.info/dash/bejne/qa11mc6gZM-ucZM.html

Kenneth's mother Louisa's ability to impersonate surely rubbed off on her son. To a degree, so did his dad's Charlie's acid tongue: "Do you want to look like a TART? Stick to your own color; you can't improve on nature. You ought to know that; you're OLD enough!" Mercy!! I agree with Kenneth, though, about being glad that certain folks brush their teeth after lunch, lol. I am sorry this unique and talented human being passed on too soon. How beautiful that he could do Shakespeare with Olivier and comedy as well. Footnote: The photograph of Saint Paul's Covent Garden was breathtaking. Of course, I really appreciate the volume of photographs you use in these projects. You are beautiful, smart and talented and we reap the rewards of those.

I met KW in person once. It was in 1983 and quite near to Marchmount St. He was walking down the street coming towards me. I stopped him and said how much I admired his work. He told me to 'f**k off' and fled past me, clearly indignant at my temerity in having stopped him. This brief meeting, which I have never forgotten (and for which I bore no grudge), seems to me to sum up KW perfectly. He needed interaction with others, but only on his own terms. Anything else was an intrusion and not to be tolerated.

Like you - were I in that position I wouldn't of held a grudge - I think if I'm going to be honest - I can understand how intrusive it must have felt for him - while some actors enjoy the attention - I think Kenneth only wanted it from afar! or as you say - on his own terms! x

Kenneth was an amazing talent. He was born in the next street to where my missus grew up. There is an Islington Council plaque on the site (not where the wife grew up)😂. There was a dark side to him. There is a suspicion that he bumped his father off. No firm evidence of course but his dad, with whom he didn't get on with kept something medicinal in an unmarked bottle in his shed. Somehow he got that bottle mixed up with some cleaning fluid and drank it. It was a slow painful death. An assumption has been made that Kenneth deliberately swapped the contents in fact his diary was rather cryptic about the matter and he showed no real grief or emotion over his fathers death. In 1988 the coroner gave an open verdict on Kenneths death. It's possible he took a deliberate overdose because he suffered from chronic illnesses and what he called "Bum trouble" His last entry in his diary was "Oh what's the bloody point?" A brilliant raconteur, his stage career was outstanding but almost forgotten in the wake of his comedy success. His personality these days would probably get him arrested. Meet him in the street one day and say "Hello Kenny how's things" and you might get a foul mouthed tirade from him! It's well known he liked to expose himself on the sets of the Carry On's to the extent they just told him to put it away! Yes, a complicated man who struggled with his latent homosexuality yet was a wonderful comedy actor, speaker and performer. When I see him on the box I forget his history and just revel in the performances of one of our greatest and most irreplaceable stars.

Oh I know!!! He went out for a meal at his favourite restaurant after it happened! Although to be fair he wasn’t the only one who didn’t like his father - his sister Pat couldn’t stand Charlie - said he was a proper old fashioned Victorian bully! Absolutely fascinating - I do agree there was a very dark side to Kenneth and also the ailments that he dealt with were guaranteed to make him bad tempered!!! 😬 I agree with you entirely about his ability to entertain - but I do also find his less social traits totally fascinating - and as you say he’d not get away with it today 🤭

My nephew was working on a building site in Gt Portland St, London and Kenneth Williams came past. He spoke to my nephew about what he was doing and asked his name. My nephew has a great smile and is a friendly guy. After that every time he came past he would say hello to my nephew. We heard this from my nephew after 1986 when we bought our first and only house in London. My nephew stayed with us for a while while he was working in London but eventually moved out to live in a cabin on the building site after our boiler broke down in January 1987 and BG did not install a new one until March 1987. As Kenneth Williams died in April 1988, my nephew's contact with him would have been close to the time of Kenneth's death. I note from looking at a map that Gt Portland St runs between Kenneth's Marylebone address and the West End of London (theatreland).

One of the great things about this platform, you can look up many of Kenneth's appearances on various chat shows over the years. You realise why he was such a popular guest on both TV and radio, what a raconteur and entertainer he was. I caught up with his earlier radio career courtesy of Hancock's half hour on radio 4 extra. I remember his appearances on Jackanory in the 1970s. I believe both his parents were Welsh, if Wikipedia is correct, his dad was from Port Talbot, and his mum was from Pontnewydd. Thanks again Shar.👍🌷

Thank you so much for that. I really enjoy your videos. Your voice is extremely easy to listen to compared to most youtubers. I've watched Fantabulosa many many times . I found he was 2 different people. When he played straight roles with people like Sir Laurence Olivier , his posh , well spoken , intelligent side came out and when he played roles on radio and with the carry on gang , his comedic side came out as when he was in school. I don't think he liked himself very much which is a shame but when you're in a great deal of pain with a lot of health issues, your view of the world sometimes is one of loneliness and darkness. RIP Kenneth Williams 🙏

Williams with Hugh Paddick as "Julian and Sandy" on Round the Horne were hilarious. They actually spoke Polari which was almost a sorta code for homosexuality. "Ooh hello! I'm Julian and this is my friend Sandy!" Some of the comedy was pretty risqué for the time: "We went on a cruise." "Did you get dragged up on deck?" "No, we just went casual."

I was only about 16 at the time, so it had quite an impact. I couldn't compete with my dad, though, who was with me at the time. He saw most of the other Carry On regulars as well over the years: i.e. Sid James, Hattie Jacques, Bernard Bresslaw, Peter Butterworth, Jim Dale, Barbara Windsor. He actually met Bernard. Kenneth was suspected of poisoning his father by swapping the cleaning fluid into the cough mixture bottle. This is the reason he was unable to travel to Hollywood to work.

Many Thanks for this .Was a Massive Fan of Kenneth's Amazing Humour. And on many occasions almost "Wet Myself" when he was in "Full Flow". Yes,A Complicated Personality. But My God : "A Comic Genius"

Throughout my life I seemed to have carried the characters from 'Carry On Films' like a little side show, it always keeps me amused and I'm ever grateful to have been a member of their audience. You've done a fantastic job of portraying Kenneth Williams.

The Entertainment years of the 70,80 90s I really enjoyed especially all the characters from the Carry on Films. I remember Kenneth William very well. He lived in his own world with his mum being I think his closest friend. A very different personality to most people. Thanks for the video. 👍

Yes very much so! He adored his mum I think she was his best friend too ❤ and I’m the same with the entertainment of those eras - I just love them and would rather watch old films and tv than anything produced today! Thank you for your comment and watching! Xxx

Ah now… the next person is very different from dear Kenneth!!! I hope you will enjoy the video though! I do agree - Kenneth was an amazing character - with an intriguing dark side - like many comedians who bring us such happiness - it appears at a great cost to themselves ❤️

Excellent and illuminating - looking forward to episode 2. He was a tragic clown, brilliant, funny and sad and he knew it. I never believed he killed himself if only because he lived his life on his own terms and certainly in public greatly enjoyed doing so.

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Its interesting. Presumably a (very) distant relation holds the copywrite. The reason given for witholding until very recently the full Diaries of Chips Channon was that the family waited until everyone mentioned in them (and they are eye-opening in the extreme) was dead. Presumably this applies to Kenneth's diaries. Where are they? Isnt it the BL? Anyway what a read they must be...
