Jon Pertwee - The Actor Who Made a Success from Rejection
Please join me in this video, Jon Pertwee - The Actor Who Made a Success from Rejection.
Jon Pertwee is a wonderful example of self-belief and of not letting other people's opinions or behavior, negatively influence your life.
Although Jon Pertwee was raised in a supportive and loving theatrical family, when Jon decided he wanted to go into the acting profession, with the approval and help of family members - he found himself constantly confronted with rejection.
Jon Pertwee's personal and professional story is both inspirational and motivational - in fact; it's just what the Doctor ordered - especially for anyone who is struggling with self-doubt, in any aspect of their life!
Please join me on this step back in time, as I revisit Putney Vale Cemetery and Crematorium with flowers to honor this wonderful actor and his outstanding accomplishments - from his early days in radio, stage, and films when he was an un-credited actor, to his most memorable and iconic roles as Doctor Who and the living scarecrow Worzel Gummidge.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and hopefully watch the video! Please feel free to leave comments - all I ask is that you keep it respectful, about both the person featured in the video and other people's comments - we have a fabulous growing film and nostalgia community at Beautiful Bad & Bizarre - and it's great fun with some interesting discussions - I've learned a lot from the wonderful comments!
I do my best to respond to all comments but it can take a bit of time - so thank you in advance for your patience!
If you are interested in reading more about Jon Pertwee - I would recommend his own autobiography 'Moon Boots and Dinner Suits' published by Fantom Publishing and also his final memoir 'I Am the Doctor!' by Jon Pertwee & David J Howe published by Doctor Who Books - which I believe may now be out of print but both books can be found on Amazon etc - I'm not sponsored or affiliated - recommendations are my own opinions.

Jon certainly was one of the finest actors and gentlemen to have ever graced our screens and airwaves. He was one of the best Doctors to play the role, but to me will always be fondly remembered as dear ol Worzel Gummidge. He used to make me laugh every time he uttered the words 'Cup of tea and a slice of cake Aunt Sally' to the wonderful Una Stubbs. Sadly missed and greatly respected, R.I.P Jon Pertwee 💐

Jon has the Doctor showed me men can be brave and kind. I watched DW from behind the sofa.
We tried to get tickets to see Worsel Gummage on stage in Birmingham. Our child was 4. We wrote to John and told him we couldn't get tickets as they were sold out and could we have a signed autograft. John invited us to come to the theater after the show and he met us and sat our daughter on his knee dressed as Worsel and we had a photo. Aunt Sally [Una Stubbs] came in and made such a fuss of our daughter, they were so kind.

Jon was my most favourite of the Doctors. He brought style, intelligence and was handsome too, by far the best looking Dr Who, and he made the role feel more realistic. His cloak was a classic, something mysterious and cavalier about it, his look was the best of all the docs, and his face is one you don’t forget. Such a tragedy to loose him so young, as he had so much more to give. 😢

I hadn't realised Jon Pertwee had insisted so strongly he should play the Doctor his own way - and how right he was. You can see moments of 'zaniness' written into the first episodes but they evaporate quickly. I love his Doctor - serious, vain, moral, indignant, totally charming and heroic.

I met Jon Pertwee twice. He came very close to my home town of Bargoed in April 1973. The BBC came to the village of Deri , near Caerphilly, South Wales to film an episode of Doctor Who:"The Green Death". He flew over my school in a helicopter,my friend Lee ran out to see him. I met Jon Pertwee again in April 1994 when he returned to the area to open a visiting centre. BBC Wales were there to film it and I ended up on the news with him at 6pm. He was lovely.

I saw his one man show 'An Evening with Jon Pertwee' at the Stables in Wavenden, not long before he died. He was interesting and engaging and very funny. A charming, elegant man. Curiously he seemed far prouder of Worzel Gummidge than his stint as Doctor Who. However, I always thought he was an excellent Dr. Who who never failed to play the part completely straight, no matter how daft the plots were. A great professional with a wonderful voice - who could forget him in The Navy Lark? Luckily, we still have so much of his work that keeps his memory alive.

Jon Pertwee will always be my favorite Doctor Who. His doctor was the first to own the TARDIS. The time lords gave it to him after they forced regenerated him and exiled him to earth. The costume he wore as the doctor. He stole from a doctor after waking up in a hospital. When Mat Smith also stole his clothes from a hospital changing room. I felt he was paying homage to Jon. I also enjoyed his later show Whodunnit.

I agree, he was the best Doctor, or at least in the top 3. While Patrick Troughton is often credited with keeping Doctor Who going after the first regeneration, it was Jon Pertwee who ensured Doctor Who evolved and survived the modernisation of colour and the move to more mature stories. Without Jon Pertwee, it's likely Doctor Who wouldn't have survived long enough for Tom Baker to come into the role.
One of the best Dr's along with Tom Baker and David Tenant. Loved him in Worzel Gummage too. Love the fact that Diana Doors got to work with the legendary Goldie Hawn, even if it were before my time. Love Goldie, hilarious and beautiful woman.
My sister and I would hide behind the sofa when the Dr Who theme tune came on the telly! We'd be terrified of the monsters but the sight of our favourite Doctor always reassured us that the good guys would win and we'd come out of our "den" and be enthralled by the show, magnificently creative as it was!

He is probably my favorite Doctor of them all. I loved so much what he brought to the role. I started with Tom Baker back in the 80s who personified Dr. Who to me originally. Then later they showed reruns of Pertwee's era. At first I didn't think much of him as Dr. Who, but he really grew on me over time and became a big favorite if not my all time favorite. To me he personifies the best in Dr. Who. He really brought out the concept of an ET (Time Lord) that is more human than human. It really was a brilliant way of playing the role that sticks out. Seems like he has quite a big cult following as a favorite Doctor these days, from what I've seen. He was sort of the peak of the entire series in my mind. Some of the best scenes were ones with him and Roger Delgado together. For example the fencing scene in The Sea Devils. That's not to say the rest of them weren't great. There are quite a few others that make it hard to pick a favorite. Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee had such a great stage presence. It's like those three I could watch all day simply because of how gripping their performances and Doctor Who personas were. Some of the best scenes were them practically monologuing. Half of the time the companions were more there for support and to translator for the audience.

Even though I started watching Dpctor Who in the Patrick Troughton era, Jon was my favourite Doctor with Katy Manning. Great Review

A beautiful tribute to a much missed entertainer. He was an excellent dr who and, imho, would be near impossible to better as Worzel. I had the great pleasure and good fortune to meet Jon four times over the years and would be happy to share those memories with you Shar,if you so wished. Thank you for posting such a wonderful bio. 😊

Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your personal connection with Jon Pertwee. I'm so delighted you enjoyed the video. Jon's portrayal of both the Doctor and Worzel left an indelible mark on so many (including me as a child watching Jon in Dr Who particularly!), and it's clear you hold him in high regard. I'd love to hear your memories of meeting him if you'd like to share. Your support means a lot. Thank you for watching the video - it's very appreciated xxxx
What I think is lovely is that when looking for graves two cast members of last of the summer wine are buried in the local graveyard in the series as it was soo picturesque-Great pals John Sallis and Bill owen aka Cleggy and Compo!!
Charles Laughton, what a man. But for me, carry on screaming “Now let me see, fingers I have known!” What a superb eccentric line by a superb actor. Only Jon could carry that off. Thank you Shar x

Just to let you know, the character John played on Dr. Who was simply known as ‘the Doctor’…. From this video it looks like John had quite a life and career. And I think of all the original Doctors he was my favorite. But there was more to him than alien monsters and sonic screw drivers …. RIP John

I think the credits always said 'Doctor Who'. David Tennant insisted that he was credited as 'The Doctor', when he took on the role, and as both he and Russell T Davies were lifelong Who fans, it was changed
I am a massive fan of jon pertwee my favourite doctor who and I love the navy lark and all his work I am so happy I found this channel as I love old films and TV shows wishing you and yours all the best from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪

Thank you so much Michael! I have to say as you have probably realised - for me vintage films are everything!!! There are few modern films that get anywhere near the vintage films watchability! xxx
The Doctor I grew up with - when interviewed, he was funny, well mannered, and from those, I met (who met Jon) one of lives gentlemen - a pretty good legacy

Jon was a great talent with multi facets. The likes of Jon are non existent now sadly. He first made me laugh on the Navy Lark radio show, then in comedy films and later TV as Dr Who and Worzel Gummidge.

Thanks for a wonderful story of a great actor. Two things jumped out at me. 1) was that Jon was in the Navy Lark, the producer of it was one of my mother’s best friends, Alastair Scott Johnstone. 2) that you ended up at Putney Vale crematorium which was a short distance (200m) from where my first marital home was located. So thank you for bringing two lovely memories back to my mind. You make the best videos of these great personalities, so again a big thank you for that.

Oh!!! Thank you so much Richard - I’m really glad to have helped bring those memories to you! And how wonderful that Alastair Scott Johnstone was one of your mother’s best friends! I love that! And that you lived so close to Putney Vale! I grew up regularly visiting Putney - my grandparents on my mum’s side lived in Wandsworth and my Nan used to take me to Putney on shopping expeditions! ❤️

It's amazing how much the younger Jon looks like Danny Kaye.
I've been listening to the navy lark on Audible today, Jon was amazing with his various voices, I also listened to his son Sean singing fireball from love, honor, obey. I only found the film because I'm a fan of Tony Christie and like to hear covers of his songs, so when I saw a clip of avenues and alleyways sung by the cast as the opening credits for love, honor, I had to watch it. On the navy lark cds there a bonus track of Jon doing a duet with June Whitfield singing have I stayed away to long. RIP JON ❤❤

Thank you for this. Excellent. Cheers. It was always a joy to notice Jon Pertwee crop-up in roles in film, radio & TV. My father was an Officer in the RN, so "The Navy Lark" was a regular feature of my childhood. It also just so happens that Jon appeared in 3 of my all time favourite Carry Ons. Doctor Who was a given. As for Worzel, I was a little too old for that and never saw it. We are lucky enough to have his son Sean, who is an incredible actor.
