Kenmore 80 Series Disassembly & Cleaning - Part 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Originally recorded December 26, 2014.
Doesn't EVERYONE clean their washing machine the day after Christmas?
xjoe81x "inherited" this machine with the house he bought. I offered to run several cycles with bleach and Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, but that wasn't good enough. He had to go "balls to the wall" and COMPLETELY dismantle it.

    The top of the agitator is the fabric softener dispenser. Just pull up on the turquoise ring and pull the whole thing off. The cap inside also just pulls out, just friction fit.

    One can always tell by the drain holes in the basket if these are 80 series or 90 series. The 90 series has holes that make a diagonal pattern - that is the one that I just bought this past weekend - and I LOVE it - works like a charm, except for the lid switch - gotta get the seller to make good on the warranty and replace that part as it wants to stop draining/spinning unless the lid switch is reset by opening/closing the lid 6 times within 12 seconds - crazy I know, but it works! :)

    You called it disassembly @jaykay18 , Look up ANY other disassembly video. When you title your video disassembly, the connotation is that IT IS an instructional. As you can see in the comments of this video, there are QUITE a few of them mention NOT SHOWING how you did something.....why do you think that is? Well, I'll tell you. You should remove the term disassembly from your title because youre impying to people that you ARE showing them how to disassemble. This isn't meant to be an instructional? Then what the hell is it? Entertainment? The fact that the video DIDN'T show what I would have expected to is less maddening than you're weasling out of it with a lame excuse. You should add "For entertainment only" or "NOT an instructional video" to your title.

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    Жыл бұрын

    I'd need a better description of "spin cycle doesn't work at all". Like, does the motor run? Does the motor just hum and do nothing? Does it makes angry growling/grinding sounds? Will it spin if the tub is empty? The problem could be as simple as just a bad drain pump which can be replaced without disassembly.

  • @jaykay18

    For this model, if you have a fabric softener dispenser, remove it. There's a teal ring, you push it up or down and it will allow you to pull it off. If you don't have one, there's a cap, pry it off with a flatblade screwdriver. Inside, there's a cap. It pulls right out, you can usually hook your fingers into the tabs on it. You'll then see a 7/16" bolt. Hold the agitator in place (otherwise it will spin around) and remove the bolt. Grab underneath the agitator and pull straight up.

    Do these have any type of filter that needs to be cleaned out? My series 80 seems to always leave a little water under the inner tub that doesnt drain and will start to smell, even took the tub out and cleaned it but still gets that smell. I imagine its from the sitting dirty water.

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    7 ай бұрын

    There is a "magic clean" filter on the underside of the wash basket. It requires no maintenance. If you try to take it off to clean it, you'll probably break it. As for the little water that's left there, that's actually normal. After this many years, the buildup of all that, it smells. Cleaning it out properly means replacement, so you'd replace the drain hose from the tub to the pump, the pump, the hose from the pump to the back of the machine, and the drain hose itself. Or you live with it. You can also try some straight bleach into the machine immedaitely before a neutral drain (obviously with the machine empty), and then quickly shut the machine off. That will fill the drain system with bleach, and you'd let it work its magic for an hour or two, then run a couple of regular cycles with nothing in the machine to flush it out real good.

    @@jaykay18 Hey JayKay, thanks for the response! When I initially removed inner tub I was actually able to remove the filter under the basket and clean that out. When removing that plastic filter I thought to myself if I break this, I'll just order a replacement part. Bahaha, good thing it didn't break, I looked online afterwards and couldn't find that piece for sale anywhere! Thanks for letting me know that it is normal to have a tiny amount of water left, I was almost going to pull it apart again to reinspect everything. Good idea on how to clean with bleach and shut off during drain. Or just live with it, hehe. Greatly appreciated, take care!

    Well, not really. For some reason it was coming into play no matter what the warm setting was, ATC or not. I wonder what would happen if it's just unplugged from the board? There's no error codes to flash, so it'll either just work without ATC or just won't work at all I'd guess.

    Nope, it just pulls off. Sometimes they get stuck on there with a lot of "stuff" underneath. Reach down to the bottom of the machine and pull up from there. Might require a bit of force. But it just pulls off the splined shaft, nothing more than the one bolt.

    Keep trying--don't ever get rid of that washer, you cannot buy anything that works as good and would be as reliable. Perhaps a strap wrench on the lower part of the agitator? Long screwdriver underneath it to pry up? Maybe a rubber mallet with a block of wood on top, giving it a couple good blows might help, sometimes it helps to free up what might be in there. Same thing goes with nuts and bolts, sometimes it's helpful to tighten a bolt first that you're trying to loosen.

    Yeah, thanks. xjoe81x was looking to find one locally and actually called around. He was basically told or found out that the only guy that would have that tool is an old timer that's been fixing them for years. I found it online for about 10 or 12 bucks, but we engineered our own solution for it so it worked out without it. I still feel like picking one up as there are 6 direct drive machines I have access to; that way I could lend the tool out if it's needed.

  • @jaykay18

    Interesting. If your washer drains into a standpipe, is there an air gap around the hose? If not, sewer water or gases can get into the washer, and that could easily be the smell. Is there a sink next to the washer? If so you could try having it drain into the sink a few times when you use it next--you'd have to watch it to ensure the sink doesn't overflow. But if that solves the problem would be your clue. It's also possible the drain hose itself is "fouled" from that.

  • @resonantevol5062

    @resonantevol5062

    There is an open standpipe. The hose drains upward and into it with a visible gap for air.

  • @jaykay18

    As much as I hate to suggest this, it may be time for a sniff test. Both the standpipe and the drain hose. Also, empty the drain hose into a bucket (by putting it down on the floor) and see what that's like. If that all seems fine, it's got to be inside the machine. The pump is really easy to remove and inspect, anything else would be in the tub itself.

Don't waste your time with this "Non-instructionl" video. People DON'T LIKE having their time wasted. THAT'S the real problem. Your title leads people to believe that your going to show them how to do the disassembly and then they end up wasting there time on your "Not meant as an instructional" video.

You can always learn at least something from all of my videos. Bring something to the table with you next time. Make videos of your own. Do better. Have a leg of your own to stand on.
