Kenmore 80 Series Disassembly & Cleaning - Part 2

Originally recorded December 27, 2014.
Part 2 and Day 2 of the project.
Managed to get the tub nut loose, and pulled the tub out.
Took the tub outside and cleaned it, and cleaned the outer tub as well. Reassembled, and it works!

Wow I just did that like 6 hours ago I was struggling like crazy to get the tub out finally I just used a long brush and squeezed my arm to clean the best I could but still the bottom remain dirty. It was my first time actually trying to unmount a washing machine I wish I had seen a video to help me...

Ahh yes, the workings underneath was good to see. Thanks for that! haha. It probably did a spin drain because the speed was set to Slow (along with the other things you said).

Yeah I figured you'd want to see, I mean when else do you really! I was hoping that was the only reason it did a spin drain and not due to something we did in reassembly, and it was, that machine worked fine after that, as you'll see in the next video!

One mans loss is another mans treasure. That's what happened to the previous home owner. Left a good machine behind and moved to a new house with modern junk. That washer cleaned up pretty well. The outer tub looked like somebody took diarrhea in it lol. Can't wait for the video of its completion

Yeah it's funny. I asked xjoe81x if he would ever clean the machine again, and he said there was no reason to. I told him that eventually it will look the same way again, and he said, "Yeah, but it's my own dirt!"

I would recommend replacing it just so it works properly and it doesn't cause more problems down the road. :)

They're suspension springs, help to keep the tub balanced.

No, not yet. It may or may not be replaced in the near future, as it's still working for now. If it "brakes", it won't be replaced. If it breaks, it will be replaced.

at 7:59 you mention the filter screens, how do you find and clean them? Thanks

Oh just take the fill hoses off and you'll see them in there. DO NOT remove them permanently, if you take them out to clean them, make sure they go back in, otherwise it can damage the fill valve.

Yep, you'd want to take it apart and clean it. You don't need to go crazy taking it apart, if you can get a scrubby pad on a stick you can reach down between the tub and the basket and clean it that way.

@@jaykay18 between the tub and the basket? Lint, thousands of pieces of sticky debris, appears on clothes after spin. My friend took the side off and if you mean the inner tub and outer tub I can see a dark area mostly at the upper area. I thought mold or debris and he said all machines get this build up. He's not really familiar with washers as far as fixing them. I got this machine on the marketplace locally and the little scammer is avoiding me. I just want to try and fix it. I haven't determined yet if the jerky spin is from being off balance which it was because its still pulled out. My friend sorta put the side back on but no clips. I dont remember seeing a way to access between the tubs. I'll start back at your 1st vid. I still cant find info about this lint stuff other than your commenter here.

Yes, all of the machines get that ring of stuff at the top. You want to clean that. Take the cabinet off the machine, and then you have to take the white ring off the top, there are 6 or 8 clips going around that secure it. If you have (or can fashion) a scrubby pad on a stick that would work, or something like a small putty knife to scrape the crap off. You want to try to remove most of what sticks to the knife so have a rag handy. Then you're going to want to run at LEAST 3 full load size loads (with nothing in the machine) with HOT water and BLEACH. Then, run a cold load. No cutting corners on that, it'll cost you 2 dollars in water. After that, put an old black t-shirt you don't care about in there and wash that on whatever setting you want to test and see if there's lint. If there still is, or if you just can't seems to get that ring of scum out of there, you're going to have to take the machine apart, and you will need a spanner wrench to do it. That's a special wrench you can't buy in stores, you have to buy it online, it's about $15. Something like this is what you need: www.amazon.com/AMI-PARTS-Washing-Machine-Whirplool/dp/B07RZX273V You'll also need a hammer or small sledge to bang on the wrench. Then you can remove the basket and really get in there and clean. Another idea to try (with a caveat) is to remove the hoses to the drain pump and see if there's anything stuck in there. The caveat is that if you bend the hoses too far, and they are old, they might crack or spring a leak, and then you'd need a replacement. They're not expensive (none of the parts for the machine are expensive) but then you'd have to wait for that part to come in. If this all sounds like too much work, remember, a new machine is going to cost you at least $600, and won't wash worth a damn. If you can fix this one, and they are very simple to fix, you'll save yourself $600 and have a huge satisfaction of a job well done every time you use the machine; not to mention it will FAR outlast the crap they sell today.
