I did go, Feb. 2009. Beautiful place to spend a month. So much to see if you're inclined to walk and discover: empty stone church with sky ceiling and carpet of grass, hotel with beautiful common area & helpful front desk staff on the corner near the library (Lansdowne Arms Hotel I think - never actually stayed there), good food, local history such as a building a bit outside of town that was once 'the TB house', horses to see, yoga offered at another hotel, various cottages to rent and B & B options. It is not a time warp, it's an actual living town, but you do actually also meet people who are indeed extremely interesting and welcoming. A nun who warned me not to assume I'm safe walking off in the evening on a certain road alone; a woman I met on the train from Dublin who does family histories and had me over to her house; a man who told me which pub 'we' all' (?) meet up in, inviting me to join; the lady in the knitting shop who sold me her own knitting needles to suit my knitting preferences; the man at an internet/movie shop who made me a Paramore CD, unsolicited. Plus great natural foods shop, knitting shop, many other lovely shops. Can do day trips to Killarney (by very comfortable bus) which is also enjoyable, but no need to leave Kenmare. I recommend going (once travel's safer in terms of COVID). Maybe buy tickets/reserve accommodations now! Help out the town in the present, get yourself set up for a great trip to look forward to. Thanks Kenmare for a memorable experience!
