KelTec Sub 2000 Review (or just use a Glock?)

In this video I discuss the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 9MM PCC. This gun is great to look at and to hold. It is fairly accurate with a 16 inch barrel. Unfortunately there are also a lot of things that could have been done better and the quality after about 500 rounds is in question. Lucky it is really cheap at the time of doing this video coming in between 400 and 500 dollars. Only time will tell if it holds together. If it does I might raise my opinion of it as a very portable PCC for backpacking and those impromptu plinking sessions that come up around camp.

I will continue giving thumbs-up to anyone taking the time of their busy life to create and upload a video demonstrating or giving opinions on a gun. It's easy for us to sit and watch and all the creator asks is for a thumbs-up. Thank you for taking the time, sir! You covered all the Qs I have on this gun, The video has 6,600 views and a mere 117 likes! It shows real selfishness on our part and that's a shame

I always carry a Glock 43 on me. When the riots all over the country started, I put my gen 1 Sub2000 and my Glock 19 in my backpack. Both take the G19 mags. To me, the Sub2000 is not the best rifle, but it's the best rifle to put in a backpack when there is a chance you might be swarmed by a mob that wants to kill you.

I have the original Kel-Tec SUB-2000. I love it. Never had a problem with it. It serves its purpose of giving a much higher bullet speed, much more accurate than a handgun, extremely storable when it is broken down. I would highly advise against using the charging handle with your left hand. Most semi-auto carbines you can only charge with the right hand, and that is for a reason. You don't want your finger near the trigger with a right hand while you're charging it with the left hand. You can get accidental discharges that way. It is meant to be charged with the right hand, with your left hand on the fore stock. At first I had trouble with the low height of the sights. A quarter inch higher would have been a little easier, but I got used to it. Very accurate, and hard-hitting for a 9 mm. A great way to have a carbine as well as a pistol in the caliber. For my needs I have only made one upgrade to the gun. Using velcro straps that I wrapped around the forestock, I am now able to carry a second magazine on the gun for immediate use. I merely use the straps to strap the extra magazine to the bottom of the forestock. It does not interfere with my ability to handle the gun either.

Thanks for the comment. I think where people go wrong when bashing this gun is they don't factor in the price. For the money this is a good value and does what it is intended for well enough.

Good summary of the good and bad points of the Sub. I have the G19 grip and wish it was the G17. My hands aren't overly large but I have 2 fingers hanging off when firing. Of course when there is a 33 round mag inserted I can wrap my fingers around that. I never liked how M*Carbo sold weaker but overpriced springs for most guns, but they have come up with some really nice parts for the Sub. I'm installing the spring kit, metal trigger and buffer today, getting a taller rear sight (and taller front AR post next.

PCC adds up to 30% increase in velocities and FT lbs. You can shoot it way more accurately and out to way further distances. However, you can't conceal it.

Yep exactly. If you look at the shooting part of this video you can see how much more accurate the pcc is compared to the handgun. So for home defense for example that is where I see a pcc being a better choice than a pistol. Thanks for the comment.

Overall excellent gun. Mines is stock and not as bad as everyone makes it out to be in that configuration. Extremely accurate once irons sighted in, 500 rounds no issues or malfunctions and doesn’t kick like that either. I’ve shot the fully kitted mcarbo versions and it’s not worth the upgrades only the red dot really

For what this gun is and the price point I agree it isn't that bad. Can't expect a Ferrari on a Kia budget. I'm also not doing any upgrades at this point because I feel that money is best spent on other things.

I feel the same way. This vSub2000 is what it is. As for “me”, I will put my ca$h into an AR Grendel or 5.56 pistol, or a 14.5inch barrel, pinned and welded flash hider. Then I can sholder it with ease. I own the Sub for really close range protection. 40 S&w out of a 16 inch barrel is working at 10mm velocity. Enough for a black bear protection with much better accuracy. Thats it. 10mm results, much better accuracy, extending the effective range by 35-50 yards.

You make some valid points, however the stock SUB2k makes some sacrifices in durability, functionality and accuracy in order to keep the gun affordable. Buyers know (or should know) that going in. I own the MCARBO M-Series which cost twice as much, (I paid $750 three years ago, but with today's rebate you can get it for $700.), but it addresses all the stock guns flaws including reducing trigger pull to around four pounds and replacing plastic parts with metal and I love it. I don't have an issue with the reciprocating charging handle or the lack of a last round bolt hold open any more than having an issue with the lack of those features on my RAK-47. I can only charge the AK with my right hand, but the SUB I can pull back the charging handle with either hand. That charging handle reciprocating on the SUB2k actually helps reduce recoil and can be upgraded to be more effective. Because of the blow back system the little gun has more recoil than many people like to admit. Adjusting elevation on that front sight shouldn't be an issue and I'm puzzled by the complaint. Once you've zeroed you shouldn't have to mess with it again and even if you did, it adjust the same way as the stock sight on my AR-15. Nothing new or innovative here. You can just adjust it using the tip of a 5.56 or similar round if you don't have the tool - which didn't come with my Colt either. As far as possible loose screws goes, you can upgrade those soft aluminum pins and screws to steel and as far as installing an optic goes there are several mounting options that twist or flip out of the way to allow you to fold the gun, but I settled on a simple 45 degree offset mount and use a small reflex red dot intended for a pistol. I end up cocking the gun over to the left when firing it, but I get a more comfortable cheek weld as a result. Even with my bad eyes I can ping steel at 100 yards. The only other accessories I added were an AFG and a Missouri Tactical recoil pad. There's a lot more to be said about this gun, but this was a good basic review and most of your negatives are valid. However, they can easily be addressed with readily available upgrades or by just having bought the M-Series. I have old arthritic hands so because of better control and accuracy I would choose even a stock SUB2k for home defense over my Glock and it also makes a good easily concealable truck or backpack gun. If I can make one observation. Perhaps it was just camera angle, but you appeared to have your finger brushing the triggers of both weapons while talking about them. Your finger wasn't fully inserted beneath the guard, but seemed to tickle the triggers in an unsafe manner. Something you want to consciously avoid doing even with an "empty" gun. Don't let that finger relax, but keep it fully extended until ready to fire the weapons.

You must understand the whole idea of the Sub2000. An Inexpensive backpack or backup pistol caliber weapon. It passes everything it was intended to be with flying colors. The only way I would spend money on upgrades, would be if it was the only weapon I could afford. Right now for a few hundred dollars more you can buy an AR-15 with a 16 inch barrel. Why waste money on a backpak/backup PCC trying to make it into something it will never be. I own a 9mm and a 40S&W Sub's. They are fun little carbines. Very safe and accurate from the factory or they would not be able to sell them. They are very popular.

I do find the sub 2000 to be accurate as you can see from the groups it shot. I'm sure the upgrades you bought make it better. I was just giving my opinion based on the stock gun I have which feels like the handgrip is splitting in the front and the front sight blade was loose and moved around in the sight post. It took me a bit to figure out that was why the windage adjustment wouldn't stay sighted in. Thanks for watching the video and for the comment.

I would personally rather have a Glock 34 with a red dot. The Sub2k is cool, but due to it’s heavy blow back recoil, difficult iron sights, and overall poor ergonomics I honestly think in most cases a good handgun with a red dot would be smaller and reasonably just as effective.

@@williamkissinger3164 Sure, but how many encounters are going to be past 50 yards? Almost none are past 10-25 yards. So with the long slide Glock and red dot you get exceptional performance and reliability - all in a small package - that gives you great on target ability out to about 50 yards, and then slightly decreased ability from 50-100 yards. There is no right answer obviously.

Uh, no. The stock SUB2k is an innovative fun gun, but with a number of flaws due to corners being cut in order to keep the price down making it affordable. It is a far cry from "Best gun ever made." That said, I own the MCARBO M-Series with numerous upgrades that make the gun 1,000 times better and I love it. It's neat, it's cool, it's fun, it shares mags and ammo with your sidearm and I'd choose even a stock SUB for home defense over a Glock due to ease of handling and accuracy, but... not the best gun ever made.
