Kelsey Grammer Breaks His Silence on the Most Hated Cheers Co Star

Are you a fan of the classic sitcom, Cheers? It was a monster hit for NBC in the 1980’s and chronicled the exploits of a group of bar patrons and workers in Boston. The cast has largely gone on to great success, including Kelsey Grammer, who managed to stretch a 3 episode arc into several seasons on the show, and a spinoff series of his own. But did you know that Kelsey released a book after the show ended, where he said that the reason he was asked to stay on was simply to annoy another cast mate?

Grammer made the remarkable statement, which was then treated as true until a producer on the show actually came out and said it was false! In this video, we’re taking a look at the feuds that happened on Cheers, and how Kelsey and this costar never quite saw eye to eye. We also talk about how and when certain cast members left the show, and what Kelsey’s journey on Cheers and Frasier was like.
We’ll also talk about Kelsey’s remarks about his long-time friend and costar Kirstie Alley, after her death in late 2022. We’ll go over his love for his costar, and why she came to his aid when he needed her most. Finally, we’ll take a look at the upcoming reboot of Frasier, slated to come to Paramount Plus in 2023! So check out this video today, as Facts Verse presents: Kelsey Grammer Breaks His Silence on the Most-Hated Cheers Co-Star

I loved the scene where the guys are stranded in the desert and they all are figuring they are going to die. So Cliff starts describing how he figured all the guys would have died. "Sam, I figured would be killed my a jealous husband. Norm would probably die of a heart attack. Dr. Crane now..." "Please Cliff, I don't want to know how I will die," says Fraiser. Cliff then says, "You bet you don't want to know!"

Martin being so opposite of Fraiser and Niles was so entertaining. He dressed like my dad and my dad was on a cane alot. Dad loved the show too. But Niles was the absolute show stealer for me. He looked like Kelsey Grammar and acted just like Fraiser when he started on Cheers but was also so unique. The way he would sneak a sniff of Daphne’s hair, his descriptions of Maris, the constant competitions with Fraiser, and the over the top snark and sarcasm with Roz and countless others, was absolutely phenomenal and so funny.

It has been reported that Shelley Long had a particular acting process which involved long times before shooting and long costume fitting sessions. I have also heard that Kelsey on Frasier that did not like rehearsals and preferred to do only one take, reacting to the other actors in ways they might not be prepared for. Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle. I feel that Shelley Long made the right decision to leave after 5 seasons when the character had been fully explored. Cheers was a better series as a whole with the end of the Sam and Diane story line giving the series new life. Long and Grammer were both brilliant in their roles. as was the entire cast.

In addition to creating the character of Frasier, he brought the memorable character of Sideshow Bob to life simply by doing his voice, in the long-running cartoon The Simpsons. Who would have ever thought that Woody Harrelson would turn out to be the most successful actor coming out of Cheers. I was a bit disappointed how Rebecca was just married off to Tom Beringer in the last episode, I thought that was lazy writing. Harrelson MIGHT of turned out to be the most successful actor but Danson made the most money. Harrelson was NEVER the lead actor or top billed in any of his successful movies. Danson never really had a huge movie career but he was given a shot at a lead roll in the film Cousins, he just never generated enough buzz as a lead. His TV career however, (Cheers, Becker, CSI) if you ask me trumps what Harrelson did in film as a supporting actor.

It was too dark and it seems he did his utmost to make of his character the most despicable, unlikable douchebag ever, maybe to compensate for all the many light moments he had brought to his audiences, to show he could also do hardcore drama, but he really went overboard. For example Mr. Mayor would incarcerate his own estranged daughter to score political points with his electorate and would also be in the habit of receiving visitors in his office while still in the adjacent bathroom doing his business with the door wide open and he would come out to shake their hand without even washing his. So I could understand why it was so short lived, that is not the kind of stuff his fans wanted to see. Of course he blamed the demise of the show of politics but it was the content.

Most of this is ridiculous. Kelsey had Shelly guest starring on Frasier many times. He was in charge, and if he had an issue with her she wouldn't have made a single appearance on his show. Shelley had ideas of a big movie career which unfortunately never happened for her. That's the reason she left Cheers. I loved Kirstie....God rest her sweet soul. As for the reboot, not sure. I'll tune in...perhaps magic can strike a second time, however without Jane, Peri, and David I don't see how.

One of my favorite Frasier/Cheers moments: Cliff going on one of his long-winded, totally wrong and utterly crazy speeches about something or other. Frasier sitting next to him, staring at Cliff the entire time. Then when Cliff's finished, Frasier makes a perfect comedic pause and then carefully asks, "Cliff, what color is the sky in your world?" First time I'd EVER heard that line (I assume it was invented by the writers of the show) and it's become a mainstay. And it STILL cracks me up because of the way Kelsey Grammar delivered it.

I didn't discover Cheers until it was probably in it's third season, then kicked myself for not watching it sooner. Such a great show! Frazier is a very worthy spin-off show too. Both are still funny. I just hope the new Frazier show lives up to it's predecessors and not go the way of the new Night Court, which I think is horrible and only worth seeing for John Larroquette.

I think the producers' assessment was right on the money . . . Kelsey deserved the "promotion" to stay on the show because of his skills as an actor, and that to suggest otherwise does, in fact, short-change what Kelsey brought to the character. It was a great show, with great actors and writing!

Shelley Long being the person she was behind-the-scenes at 'Cheers' is of no surprise. Years ago on an entertainment cable-TV show [US] about the TV series 'Cheers,' I recall Ted Danson's comments about Long when she was up to negotiating her contract for renewal, where he said in effect, that there was a lot of the 'Diane Chambers' character in Long when she was dealing with the executive producers; where she negotiated herself out of Cheers. I've always had that impression that the 'Diane Chambers' character on 'Cheers' was not much of an acting stretch for Shelley Long.
