Kelly Kettle survival stove? Fact or fiction? Putting it to the test.

I've used the Kelly Kettle stove for about a year and decided to put it to the test against the claims made by Kelly Kettle salespersons and stove advocates. In the end, the stove is a quality twig burning stove that will boil water quickly with minimal materials. You will want a fire starter and the item is rather bulky for backpacking.
This stove is great if it fits your lifestyle. However, I do not feel this stove can be classified as survival gear and some of the suggestions by KK lovers don't make a lot of sense to me.

The Kelly Kettle is excellent. No one sits in the smoke unless they dislike the product trying to make it look bad. It lights really easy without the kettle on it and face the hole towards the wind without the kettle on it. When there is a decent fire going put the kettle on and start feeding twigs etc down the chimney.

I have used a Kelly kettle for 20 years and it works fine. You just don’t know how to use it. Very simply you use very fine twigs to get it started and then add slightly larger pieces. It only takes a large handful of twigs to boil a litre of water and at the same time you can be frying eggs and bacon on top.

Jonny I don’t mean to criticize your fire lighting skills. When you lite the tinder in the fire bowl don’t over crowd the fire. Let it breathe. Let the fire catch and make sure the hole is facing any wind. Then place the kettle on. I disagree that that the Kelly Kettle is not up to snuff. What’s your hurry, enjoy the process. Kelly Kettle has enjoyed over 100 years of sales, that speaks volumes.

Good morning John and thank you for your feedback. I've got plenty primitive fire making videos if you are curious about my fire making skills. I appreciate the tip but I think that you are missing my point about KK's design and claims. The fire bowl doesn't breath well at all for a tinder bundle and the KK needs a good fire starter. The point of this video was to address some interesting tips I've received from the KK community and their claims that all you need is some twigs & KK in a survival situation. KK wasn't designed for that. The KK was good for its time and does a fine job of boiling water. I have found better stoves that take up far less space, breath much better, and are far more versatile.Take care!

Hard to believe that you’re having such a hard time figuring out how to use the kettle. 1. Grab a bunch of twigs, snap them all at the same time - they’re twigs! Set them down and do the same thing two more times. Now ALL of your wood is ready to burn. 2. Put a handful in the fire base at one time but not so much that it interferes with the kettle being placed on the base. 3. Fill the kettle to about one inch of the bottom of the pour hole. Set the kettle on the base. Grab a decent pinch of your wood shavings and poke them into one of the two air holes. The air holes must be facing the wind. Don’t argue with me - just do it. Light the shavings with a match or bow drill or whatever. After lighting the shavings pick up another wad of the broken and stacked twigs and drop them down the chimney, lol. If it takes over three minutes to do all of the above, I recommend that you buy a butane stove. If you want to carry water in your Kelly Kettle, I recommend that you buy an expansion plug at a good hardware store. Replace the nut on the plug with a wing nut. Sorry if this sounds like I’m talking to a child, I apologize. Incidentally, if there’s not enough wind, you can drill a bunch more holes? 😂

Hi Black Magic. Thank you for your feedback. I really appreciate. To be honest, I haven't had any problems with the KK, and have used the KK successfully numerous times. This video was a response to some questionable comments made by the KK community. I typically toss in a few twigs, and light them with a Vaseline cotton ball. It works great at boiling water. I was really addressing the suggestions on how to deal with the bulk of the KK, carrying water, and the claim people that KK is a survival stove because you don't need to carry fuel. So far, I've yet to see anyone that actually knows how to make primitive fire in a survival situation suggest the KK is a survival tool. In the end, I find this to be a novelty item because it is one-dimensional and I do not carry it in my pack because it is way too large. The Firebox Stove is far more versatile and easy to carry. I appreciate you taking the time to write a thoughtful comment.

I actually have the opposite opinion after using the smallest version of Kelly kettle in the Algonquin Park back country for 15 meals. I found starting the fire and getting it going wasn't too hard although my starting point was often either dry pine needles or a small piece of birch bark. in one case it was difficult to start so I added oxygen using a pocket bellows. the salesperson comment about ziplock baggy for carrying water in the kettle is bizarre because you can still order the old cap that was made to seal the kettle for carrying water. I have one of these as well. I enjoyed watching your video and especially sharing your thoughts and opinions during it. Thanks!

Good morning and thank you for sharing your experience. I'm really glad to hear that you had a great experience at Algonquin Park. As I look over your channel, I can see that you really enjoy the great outdoors. So, new sub! The natural oils in birch bark & pine needles are very good options for this stove. Birch bark is rather rare in my neck of the woods and I grab it every chance I get. For me, the most important things is to learn about the local resources before stepping into the woods so that I can be successful. I enjoy relaxing by the fire and have been pleased with the Kelly Kettle for the meals & hot beverages that I've prepared. I just can't go as far as calling it a survival tool.

I was the one that recommended him the plastic bag to contain the water in the bottle. The orange stopper easily comes out and will leave your bag pack soaking wet! @@NobleEndeavours123 My thinking is this: if you're going to bring the kettle on a trip it makes sense to utilize the inner empty space to the fullest to avoid having to use additional space in your pack for several water bottles, kindling etc. One should of course also bring a water bottle or a water bladder, but then you only need a single bottle which you can refill from the reserve in the kettle when needed. That being said, whether the kettle is suitable for taking on a hike depends on circumstances and priorities. It's not for everyone and for every scenario.

Simply use very slim twigs on the bottom and progressively larger ones on top. A handful of twigs is enough to boil a litre of water in minutes. If you want to add extra fuel you can larger add sticks through the base for boiling water or if you are using the frypan. You can easily light a fire in the base with a bow drill, fire roll or flint. You really need to get an education in bushcraft.

I tend to agree with you about the kettle part of the Kelly Kettle. I am, however, on the fence still about the fire base and the small grill add-on. So I might purchase just the base, pot stand and small grill plate for hot dogs, fish or a hamburger. To be fair, I did notice that did seemed quick to place the kettle onto the base after lighting it. The base mostlikely needs to bloom and ash some before adding the kettle or any other additional twigs through the top hole. Also, your firebox style stove is great except in rain ... and the Kelly Kettle is famously known for working during a full-on rain. Again, still on the fence about it. I own a SOLO STOVE TITAN and adore it for cooking whatever my heart desires... it's like cooking on a gas fired stove at home with little fuss or worry to it. Gasification stoves are very easy to regulate the heat based on the amount and type of natural fuels used. I personally prefer Hickory wood chips when I carry my own wood source. Thanks for the honestly candid review and demonstration of the Kelly Kettle.

I honestly think this is a very lazy review. You don't seem practiced in its usage. Some of those tips you received were from me and I still think those tips were solid. If you complain that the system is bulky the utilizing that inner space becomes important, and like a firesteel you need to use the system with care and proper methodology for it to be very reliant and effective. Experienced users wouldn't have any issue cooking a small meal with this product, and one the bigger models even less so.

  • @ExpeditionaryJonny

    @ExpeditionaryJonny

Thanks for your feedback & the the opportunity to test your tips. The KK is a fine product but I find it far short of your claims. Say what you want about the review, but I'm not going to make a commercial selling all of the wonderful things about the stove and showing only the perfect scenario. I made this video specifically for you Sabertooth Turtle. Space & weight is everything when backpacking and carrying water in a container that you cannot easily drink from is awkward & heavy. The claim that one does not have to carry fuel & the suggestion to carry fuel inside the stove is contradictory. Also, the claim that the stove is a good piece of survival equipment is extremely questionable. It really depends upon the local resources. If fatwood or birch bark are not available in the area, the user will have a real struggle using the stove without a good fire starter. Personally, I have put in a lot of time gaining proficiency with friction fire and a ferro rod in order to deal with very desperate situations, and I can speak with plenty of certainty that the KK is not designed for those types of situations. The more you protest and cling to your "tips" the more you show that you have a very narrow perspective and refuse to accept that the KK is not all things to all people. Here is my tip for you. In order to accept a thing or person for what it/they are, you must accept it for what it is NOT. I accept that you love the KK and are not open to honest & fair feedback. Even though I do not view the KK as a survival piece of equipment, I will still enjoy using it for what it does well (boiling water with minimal fuel).

@@ExpeditionaryJonny Fair enough, to each his own I guess. I simply found that the review contained a lot purposeful misunderstandings. You fill up the kettle with water not because you're going to drink from it directly, but because filling it up means you need to carry fewer water bottles on the side. with a filled kettle you only need 1 or 2 bottles with you instead of 3-4 and if you need a cup of tea you already have the kettle filled which means you don't need to expend that water supply you carry in your pack. Need to refill your bottles? you can also use the kettle as a refill tank. Saves a good amount of space which as you said is important. Regarding your comment about carrying fuel, that's not what the chimney space should be used for, it should be used for carrying kindling. You could've place those cottonballs in their for example or some birch bark, cardboard etc, to make it much easier to light the fuel you find in the wild. So again, I did not find your review very useful and it seemed very misguided and honestly a bit condescending as well.

Whenever that gets empty I can just refill it using the water inside the Kettle. That way I don't have to pack several bottles which frees up a lot of space in my pack. I have the scout model, so I can get a pretty good amount of water in there, and feels good to utilize all the empty space inside the kettle efficiently Carry water in a stove that has limited use? Seriously? Instead of carrying extra water, the smart hiker knows his/her water sources before heading out because they can’t afford to carry the extra weight. I’ve known through hikers that carry 1 Qt of water because they have ample opportunity to refill as they go. If you know anything about camping, you should be familiar with the 4Ws (Water, wood, wind, and widowmakers) for a campsite, so ideally the camper/survivor will be near a source of water and can replenish their supplies when they settle in. Your idea of utilizing the empty space is ……. Hmmm, interesting. Perhaps you might want to watch my video on developing a water plan at kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIOWlMdtYK2-ZrA.html. You also wrote,” I also try to use the empty chimney space to pack stuff. Usually just corrugated cardboard or some pre-dried sticks, but you can use it for anything really.” Cardboard and pre dried sticks? Seriously? Again, why carry the extra weight and use up valuable space in a backpack? In this response, you wrote, “regarding your comment about carrying fuel, that's not what the chimney space should be used for, it should be used for carrying kindling.” Uh, the only fuel the KK can take is kindling material. In my world, we call them “smalls”. Otherwise the stove is easily choked out. Also, what do you think “pre dried sticks” are? The closest thing that am willing to go along with is that I always carry a haversack in my backpack so that I can easily collect materials while I’m on the move. Here is where the rubber meets the road that demonstrates how poorly the KK performs without a proper fire starter. The twigs I used in this video came from the same source that I used to make a ferro rod fire from a bird’s nest in my water video and the fire developed just fine when I was not confined by the KK. As I’ve stated, the KK is a good specialty tool that has restricted O2 flow, and I find it irresponsible for KK lovers to make this stove to be something that it is not. It is much easier to build a normal fire without the KK and then cook over the open fire than to try to work within its narrow confines. As for the usefulness of my review, you are not my intended audience. You have already made up your mind and I merely used your own "tips" to educate viewers so that they can make an informed decision. As for your comment about being condescending, “he without sin may cast the first stone.” I’ll finish with a story that you might find interesting and explains my view of the KK. The A-10 Warthog was scheduled to be decommissioned in the 90s because its capabilities were too limited and thus too expensive. However, the Gulf War changed everything and the USAF found out that modified F-15 & 16’s could not do the same role and the A-10 was given a new lease on life. Each of those aircraft have their strengths & weaknesses. A-10 is great against the ground, F-16 for mid-range aerial combat, and F-15 for air superiority. The same holds true for the KK. It can boil water quickly with very little fuel. It might kinda get the job done in other areas, but that is not what it is meant for.

@@ExpeditionaryJonny I appreciate you taking the time to write that lengthy message. Clearly we see differently on a few things. I am not making out the KK to be something that it is not. I gave you a few tips that I personally find useful for bringing the kettle out while trying to minimize the bulkiness of the system. Personally I don't view the kettle as some ultimate survival stove, but I recognize it can be used for that purpose if necessary, as you will find dozens of videos about here on KZread. The fact that you call me a salesperson or whatever is just laughable as I'm just a regular user of the Kelly Kettle and since you already have one, I wouldn't be very wise to try and sell you something that you already own, would I? One thing is for sure, I'm going to be very cautious about giving you any tips and advice on anything in the future as I don't appreciate the condescension or the accusations of being some type of salesperson.

Hey brother! Thanks for the tip. I don't actually have any problems with the KK. When I'm not making videos demonstrating some the KK tips I've received over the years from KK "experts", I typically toss in a vaseline cotton ball in the base with a few twigs and it works great. Your point about the smoke is interesting because smoke typically indicates how cleanly the fire is burning (something really important to me when using my smoker). The only reason the fire didn't have stay power with the top loading technique is that there wasn't enough tender/paper to have a flame hot enough & long enough to light the twigs. A good fire starter takes care of the issue and brings home my point that the KK isn't a survival tool as proclaimed by some KK salesmen. I do appreciate your feedback. I really do. I hope you are enjoying your KK.

I agree with your analogy about charcoal vs gas and am always happy for people to find the product that works best for me. I've used the product lots of times with ease & successfully in the past in other videos. I was pretty rough on KK on this one because of the outrageous claims some of their fanbase made on my other videos (carry kindling, always light the stove with the kettle in place & rubberband a ziploc bag). Most everyone agrees that KK is fine for car camping if you like to make fires (which I do). Most everyone also agrees that KK is way too big for backpacking and it is not the survival tool that some of the fanatics make. My skills are good enough to realize that the KK isn't worth the trouble to make it work in a survival situation when there are better options. The KK is a base camp thing at best. Sure it can carry/hold water. You can store things in the fire cavity ect. But other than only boiling water. It don’t have much use. Your limited to freeze dried foods and whatever you can cook in just hot water. Without carrying anything else single wall that’s a metal. May as well stick with a Nalgene with a nesting cup if anything. Boil water an can still use the pot to boil water to put anything into up to raw meats for a stew or soup or whatever else. But your definitely not making any food inside the kettle. Sure you can cook meats on coals an over the flames an coals ect. But a pot opens up so so many more options. Even to sterilize things that you want done in water boiled. Can’t jam things down in the kettle. An not everything can be easily sterilized by heat an fire without burning ect.

Thanks for watching and also for commenting. That's not what I said at all. The point is that you have to choose how to carry water, and anyone that has worn a backpack knows that space is a valuable commodity. The Kelly Kettle website says, "It is not designed to replace a water bottle on a trail/hike ... water may leak into your pack." If you watch my 2nd chance video on the KK, I address carrying water and the size issue in a bit more detail. My point was so valid that the KK fan that suggested I use a ziploc bag & rubberband said my video was fair and that he got a good laugh on my outtakes. Again, thanks for the view and commenting. I feel like you were very unfair in this review and went looking for reasons to criticize it. For one, you can buy other plugs for it if you wanted to carry water in it. I've actually attached two to the chain, one for carrying, and the other whistle plug that came with it. Two, your critique if the low flame output didn't seem fair because you didn't have the hobo stove attachment connected to it. That increases the height allowing forbmore room for kindling. Easy fix. Third, throwing a generic water bottle in a fire and calling it more effective is not fair because you still have to take the time and calories to process the firewood to make it happen. With a KK you only need to forage for sticks and twigs to get it going. Not to mention if you're in a situation where you're trying to remain stealthy, having a bonfire wouldn't be a good idea whereas the KK can get the job done while still remaining stealthy. Not impressed.

You gave up too easily . . . It’s not magical, just like any other fire method you have to learn how to light it effectively by preparing dry tinder and kindling and setting them properly in the base. Collect some dry thin straightish fuel sticks for the main burn preferably longer than the kettle height.Next set a wigwam of dry (approx 5 inch) kindling in the base leaving a gap where the air holes are (you can tie the wigwam with jute twine to hold it together which sounds like a faff but it’s not really) - put some tinder in this gap and next to the holes.Next fill stove top with water, put the whistle bung in and place on top the base and put several of the thin long sticks carefully down through the top - carefully so as not to disturb the wigwam of kindling. All this is much easier than it sounds. Light the tinder and face the holes into the wind - it’s now a non-tend stove/self-boiling stove that works in any weather extremely fast and efficiently.

Well, you completely missed the point of the KK, and it’s intended use, and how to use it, plus your “skills” are questionable. Terrible review.

You are hilarious! The whole point of the KK is to boil water & that's IT! That is exactly how I started the video. My issue is with the KK community that tries to make the kettle out to be something that it is not. It's not very good at cooking food and definitely is not a survival tool.

@@ExpeditionaryJonny Your outrage only embarrasses you further. The KK is Ghillie kettle. Not a survival stove. It was designed specifically for fishing guides in Ireland to boil water only, using available combustibles. It’s not designed for cooking. Those resent attachments are a nonsense dreamed up be C21 marketing managers. To boil water it is extremely efficient, but it’s NOT a back packing or bloody “bug out” stove. It to be placed in a rowing boat and used to brew up at lunch time. The reason your fire went out was your skill and understanding of how it is supposed to be used, not it’s failing. Using long thin sticks will not maintain heat in the base, to perpetuate the burn, they will flare up in the chimney, moving the point of combustion higher until it’s extraneous to the kettle. It is designed to burn short prices of wood or pine cones or similar, allowing the heat to remain in the base. The chimney walls are to absorb heat not contain the burn. Plus, if you use long sticks you can not remove and replace the kettle as the tall fire collapses over the edges of the burning chamber, as you demonstrated so effectively. A bad workman blames his tools. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Make a video on Ferrocerium rods, because you can’t use them either. Now you rant back with more ridiculous bull shit and I’ll ignore you, as I’ve educated you enough.

@@ExpeditionaryJonny Oh no, trying to bait me, er, nope didn’t work. It’s funny, in your other video on the KK you sing it’s praises. So which one is bull shit? Answer - both of them. Go on, have the last word.

@@1967AJB Hahaha! ROFL. So you did watch the other videos, eh. So, then you know that I'm aware of KK's history and that this video was a direct response to the claims from all of the KK fanatics. I'm gonna stick with everything I've always said. The KK does a fine job of boiling water with limited resources. It's not the multi-use survival tool some people like to claim, I bought it as a favor to a friend, and it has no place in my backpack. And, you are definitely a keyboard warrior. However, you make me laugh so keep 'em coming if you want.
