This was a perfect tribute. Kelly has the rare required combination of the pipes, the control, and the humility needed to pay tribute to both Dolly and Whitney, two of the greatest the world has ever and will ever see. She didn't try to outdo Whitney in vocal acrobatics (I liked her understated, lower "please" before "don't you cry" - it was a perfect moment to leave space for us to hear Whitney's almost whistle note "please" in our memories) but she paid her respect by nailing a couple of Whitney's key vocal choices and making other parts almost conversational sing-song the way Dolly's version does. So many artists take an opportunity like this to make it about themselves, and Kelly always steps up to the moment with humility and grace. Love her.

She’s the reason I started watching American Idol. That first season I thought it was going to be a joke of a show, but boy I was wrong. She gave it credibility. I’ve been a die hard fan of her ever since. Now my granddaughters are as well. There’s literally nothing she can’t sing.

Christina has been doing this her entire career with each album/project and goes above and beyond to stay true to those who are in each genre. People just chose not to watch and/or listen. And as far as being diverse in idol, kind of hard not to be when each week has a theme... Not to mention that every song she did was either Aretha or something that Mariah had done.

_It was the summer of 2002. I still can remember stumbling across this new show that people were talking about. Singers were competing live, and we at home got to phone in our votes to see who survived to the following week. I remember Justin, Nikki, Tamyra, Ryan… but there was this one girl from Texas. Holy cow, could she sing. She was on a completely different level…_ And here we are, twenty years later, and Kelly from Fort Worth is still humbly bringing down the house.

I have perfect pitch and can confirm that all of her notes were within 1 cent of being perfect. 1 cent! That's unheard of.

She said on her Howard Stern interview that she wasn’t worthy of doing this song. I’m pretty sure everyone disagrees. She killed it.

Is it just me or are people just not seeing the comma in your comment? They acknowledged that the original and Whitney's are not the same with the comma in between the original and Whitney's y'all. Get it together.

This song has been sung so many times and so often with the intention of showing off vocals that sometimes the sentimental lyrics are overshadowed by the singer. Kelly's such a powerful vocalist but always makes sure she's telling the story and I love her for it.

Which is interesting that Dolly Parton wrote this song and she isn't known for having a huge voice.

Kelly went from being a good singer to one of The Greats. 💜

I think for a lot of us, we watched her win American idol, and watched her progression to this huge star, and how she’s this nation’s image of living the American dream.

WOW. Kelly hit it out of the park with this. Absolutely a beautiful cover of this song. Gave me goosebumps throughout the whole song. Whitney would’ve loved Kelly singing this song

I’m not sure Kelly knows the magnitude of her voice. She is at this very moment and will forever be an Icon. She’s been through what I personally know to be extremely traumatic which is divorce. You’re a shining star and one of the best singers in the world.❤ leave the hurt and anger in the past. That’s where it all belongs. Healing is a must.

I love everything about the way she sang this. She didn’t over sing it. Sincere, powerful, sweet and emotional. Whitney would have loved it. Kelley can sing for sure!

@@debco12 I know I shouldn't compare singers they're all amazing etc. but this is the first time I've really felt the emotion behind the song and I had a tear in my eye watching this. I loved Whitney but I think Kelly brings so much more to this song than her or anyone else I've heard.

I can’t think of any attempt at this song that’s better than this. It’s like she did Dolly first, then did Whitney’s. A+++ She should have released this. It’s that good.

She's the ONLY person outside of Dolly and Whitney that can sing that and make it sound like hers!

She did that very well. As she ages, her control and purposefullness grows. She is truly blossoming into one of the greatest female vocalists of all time.

Kelly is so underestimated! This girl can SAAAAAANG! She let's the words and story of the song play the star rather than trying to do all the vocal aerobics like other artists. And don't get it twisted, she can do the runs, flips, dives, highs, lows, etc., etc., etc., but she knows she doesn't need to. Kelly is fire! Yasssss Queen!
